Hi all,
Now that my Smit Japan is finished it's time to start a new build, and why not start with a new model that has just come onto the market.
MMB's ASD Harbour Tug.
www.marksmodelbits.com
I was lucky mine was delivered by hand by the man himself and Ang
(Please do NOT expect the same service, the price of fuel would bankrupt him)
What do you get:-
Fibreglass hull,superstructure and wheelhouse.
all the deck castings made from resin
Motors, shafts, steerable korts........ it's easier just to look at the photo below
-
Right first thing first, make a stand, i made mine from 1/2" MDF and stained it so it's waterproof.
-
Looking at the hull you can see the usual mould marks these were easily sanded to remove them, then the whole hull was sanded with 240 wet and dry.
-
Hy Jenno
I,ve seen your Smit Japan, and some of your other builds and they are all outstanding, I dont think Mark could have found anyone better to show of his new production, if it comes out half as good as the Smit it,ll be a cracker. :-))

Hi Bosun,
Thank you very much, much appreciated,Speak to you soon.
Mark.

Hi all,
Thought I’d start the superstructure a nice clean moulding is supplied, you only need to clean the bottom where it sits on the deck ,washed all the resin parts and sanded them down on a piece of sandpaper taped to a board. There are plenty of doors and hatches supplied in the kit so you can choose how many and were you want to fit them, after everything was dry I filled any gaps with P38.
Next came the hand rails, There a some nice brass stanchions in the kit, and a quick twist here and there it all fits nicely in place.

-
That's coming along nicely jenno, makes me want to get hold of mine, ordered at the South West Model Show at Shepton Mallet. My fault though, for saying to Mark that I'd pick it up at the Weymouth Show! At least I can take pleasure (and notes!) watching your build; superb work as usual.
Danny
-
That is looking good.

Hand rails on the superstructure are nearly finished just need a little filing to clean them up, the remaining rails at the rear will be made and fitted when the wheel house is finished.
Jenno.
-
The winch comes with a diagram which is easy to follow all parts were washed, sanded and assembled quite easily, the rope will be fitted after painting.

-
O.K now some technical stuff, the Kort nozzles need to be trimmed down,
2mm off the top of the kort and 5mm of the bottom of the shaft casting
“see pencil lines on them in the photo.
Jenno.
-
Now with the two pieces glued and filled the holes were drilled in the hull and the tubes fixed in place Now these tube are special they have PTFE bearing, I’ve never seen bearings on a rudder/kort before(Please correct me if I’m wrong) There are two large resin blocks supplied which I drilled out to 6.5 to fit over the tubes when everything was lined up, square, parallel and looked right the blocks were lifted and fixed in place with body filler P38.when dry I fitted the tiller arms and connecting rods and walla two working korts.
Jenno.
-
Time to fit the shafts, firstly I cut 2 discs at 48mm Diameter so that they fit tight in the korts and fitted them to the screw end and then drilled the holes in the hull, Because there is approximately 100mm of shaft sticking out I decided to fit ”P” frames, made from 7mm Dia brass tube soldered to a piece of brass plate which fits through the hull and a piece of thin wire and P38 to hold it place. I used a piece of stiff plastic in place of the rubber on the coupling to line up the motor to the shaft then when the filler under the motors had dried I then fitted the rubber to the couplings and drilled through and fitted the wire to secure them.

O.k. back from a week’s break so I’ve made a start on the deck
I firstly sanded the fiberglass to give a good key for the deck supports, I used superglue to bond 6mmx3mm strips of plastic to the hull ,once they had dried I then used revell contaca liquid glue to fix the second strips in place. I then made three beams which fitted from side to side to support the centre of the deck. i also made a box to for the steering servo to fit into, once all this had dried I went all around with P38 to give extra strength.I also made the funny bit that fits to the bottom of the hull “see photo below”.

MMB's ASD Harbour Tug.

Nice looking Tug Jenno!...
Will have to see if MMB does export... O0
-
With all the frames in place I cut the deck out of 1.5mm plastic card any gaps will be filled when dry.
Jenno.
-
Now that I have the plans for the wheel house I transferred the measurements to the styrene sheet which was supplied, then cut them out.
I also cut out some templates to give me the correct angles for when I glued them together. When the glue had dried I then fixed the door side panels in place.
Jenno.
-
Hi Jenno my mate got one of of Mark at ALFORD show.
I told hime about your build log, will be a great help to him O0.
She is looking good.
BEST REGARDS John B

Hi Jenno
Nice work.
Can I just ask why you are doing a plastic card wheel house when your
first picture shows a moulded one?
Derek
-
Hi Derek, We were originally going to supply a GRP wheelhouse moulding but we were not 100% happy with it, looked fine from the outside but would require a huge amount of work to get the inner surfaces flat enough to glaze properly, so we decided to scrap that idea and go with plastic card instead, the wheel house is, after all, a major feature of the tug (the card is included in the kit)
Mark.
-
Hi Mark
Thanks for that, Nice to talk cars at Alfold after the BBQ.
Derek
-
Hatch coamings and rear deck support in place.
Jenno.
-
These are the jigs that I made from the plans so that the correct angle can be achieved for the top window panels.
Jenno.
-
Now with the wheelhouse nearly finished I made a start on the mast, I turned a dowel to the required diameter and gave it a coat of sanding sealer, then drilled 1mm holes for the wire stays etc. When everything was dry I then fitted all the lights on.
Jenno.
-
I’ve also made a start on the inner bulwarks, using scrap 6x3 strip plastic for the bottom supports and 1mm plastic card for the sides.
Jenno.
-
Now with the inner bulwarks finished the hull is now ready for painting.
Jenno.
-
This is what the superstructure looks like up to now, only the doors and roof handrails to fit and then it’s off to the paint shop.
Jenno.
-
That does look smashing, Jenno. A very nice job. :-))
Ken
-
Started the painting today, the hull and a few of the deck fittings.
Firstly I gave the hull a final rub down with 320 wet /dry then cleaned it down with a tac rag,
I always use Halfords spray cans which I place in a sink of hot water which thins the paint down and makes it flow better.
Jenno.
-
The hull and some of the fittings sprayed with Halfords satin black.
Jenno.
-
Cor :-)) What a lovely paint job.

That is starting to look pretty good!
Why are you using normal propshafts?
This is an A(zimuth)S(tern)D(rive) tug.
There are pretty good azimuth's (schottels) for sale, and their not all too hard to build.
Greetings Josse

hi Jenni,
you say about putting the spray cans in warm water helps it flow better. I use halfods spray cans and I must say the paint job looks much nices than yours then mine usually does. I assume this is because you've warmed it up. would this work with all spray paint cans, and how hot is the water you put the into? Is it hot water from a tap or kettel ?
Thanks, Dan

I would think that is because that is how the kit is supplied, and it is an official build for the manufacturer, pretty obvious really.

The cans only need slight warming, do not leave standing in boiling water unless you like living on the edge or are into extreme sports.
-
Tweety777 , it's just as Bosun says it's being bulid as the manufacturer supplied it,but it's your choice what you fit. Thanks Bosun
Dan/DickyD , Sorry i should have stated that the water is from the tap and is only hand warm.

Sun glasses required for this bit 8) 8), superstructure and wheel house awaiting final touches.

Hello Gents,
Haven’t done much for the last week, the wife’s in hospital so my head has been in another world so not to many words this time I’ll let the photo’s do the talking.
Jenno
-
Looking fantastic so far! Sorry to hear about the wife, hope she's better ASAP.
-
Hi All,
Right back on track wife’s home in need of a lot of TLC so this is what it looks like up to now.
jenno
-
Well this is it at long last she’s finally finished,
Apart from the wire for the hand rails and the rubber around the hull, what you see on the model, you get in the kit, This is MMB’s first kit and it’s been fun building it, maybe not for a beginner but for someone who got a couple of builds under their belt it’s ok.
So enough words I’ll let the photo’s do the talking.(and there’s a lot)
I will add a video as soon as I can.
Nice one Mark and Ang when is the next kit going to be released???????????
I would like to thank you all for your kind remarks during this build.
Jenno.
-
Well that's rather good! :-))
-
WELL DONE JENNO, O0 another fine tug for your fleet :-))
Regards John B
-
Looks great!! :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Well this is it last part of this build, the video is not the best but it gives you the idea what she’s like on the water.
