32 feet long is hardly a ship, barely a medium sized yacht. Typical American exaggeration!  %)

Surely it depends on the age of the find Colin. How long were some of the Viking long boats? Many ancient ships were now what we would call "boats". I imagine your'e correct though....but we'll have to wait and see. BY.

Hi,

I remember Time Team doing an archaeological dig in somewhere in Virginia. The American archaeologist got very twitchy when Phil Harding (the guy with the sweat soaked hat) started hacking into the ground in his usual Dorset way. The American guy explained in a nervous sort of way that all their archaeology was in the top 6 inches of the soil and not at the depths that we have in the UK.

I think it is a good find. Although she is only a boat, she will energize interest in this part of maritime history.

Also if she is a 32 foot sailboat, she may be a good subject for scale sail modelers.

OK the big ships like Cutty Sark and America are interesting, but the smaller craft (like the Gloucester schooners) are of equal interest and historical value. And they are equally worthy of being modeled.

My experience of many of our American cousins is that they have an acute sense of their history and culture.

It may be true that their cultural history is significantly shorter than the European past. However, with rather less to conserve they are probably more careful about what they have. Some of their heritage sites are wonderfully well done and many of their national conservation areas are given much greater respect than many in Europe.

There is some stuff on the msn.com including aerial photos. It is a fresh find, but I am sure there will be a thorough excavation.
This is a very recent find, as in the last few days. An archeological dig takes time.

"My experience of many of our American cousins is that they have an acute sense of their history and culture."

...and then that acute sense of culture suddenly falls into obscurity as soon as mention that the white man came along, with his diseases and his guns, and all but obliterated the indigenous peoples.

Well, you have to accept that the Americans are far, far better at preserving historic ships than we are. For example they've got battleships all over the palce whereas our most recent preserved one is Warrior.
