Hi All
Just a quick question does anyone know a good way to make davits from scratch ( they don't have too be too detailed). I was thinking of using metal bar and turning a tapper on it . I know that you can buy them which is my plan B. Also anyone know of a good book they would recommend on how to make fitting from scratch if you are allowed to say, don't want to break any advertising rules

Odd question.
What sort of davit are you hoping to make? There are many different types of the things.
When you ask this kind of question I think you really have to have some of idea what you are looking for. "Radials"?, "Crescents"?. "Schat", or many others. Age of ship you are building.
Give some details and not just "how do I make a davit". Annoyedly yours. BY.

was not trying to annoy anyone. would not know what type they are, not into that knowledge yet. the boat they are going on is tid tug. perharps i even have the name davit wrong will go back and look on the plan tomorrow. :((

Not sure that TID tugs had davits - they were pretty small. TID 164 at Chatham doesn't.

Just been to look at the plan says it is a removable ash davit if this helps if not SORRY

That sounds as if it's just something that was rigged to bring the ash up from the stokehold and tip it over the side. No idea what it looks like but presumably the plan will show it.

Guitar man, I also apologise. I wasn't really annoyed with you. So many people ask for advice (willingly given, I may add), but to answer correctly we really do need to know more or less exactly you want. That is;- type of boat/ship, time period (age) of ship and so on.
TID tugs were WW2 river and coastal vessels, and as Colin points out, perhaps they didn't have a davit or davits anyway. If yours does then I imagine it woul have been of the "radial" type. I make mine out of discarded aluminium knitting needles. Cheers. BY.

Is this the sort of davit you had in mind? On my model it was used to move the accommodation ladder seen stowed on the hatch cover of No.3 hold into position when the ship is alongside. It is known as a radial davit and is easily made, as you intimated by tapering a length of brass rod in a lathe or even an electric drill. The tapered rod should then be heated to temper it and then bent around a former of a suitable radius.
One of the best books about ship fittings is "A Ship Modelmakers Manual" by John Bowen. It was published in 1982 by Conway Maritime Press, is quite rare now but well worth purchasing if you can find a copy. James Pottinger has also just published a useful book "Model Ship Fittings".
