Been flying and pranging areos for several years but have decided to have a go at helis 450 size.
Priced them up on the net quite expensive to start up but Ive managed to get a nice second hand Mini Titan pick up tomorrow.
It will be set up for gentle circuits none of this 3D stuff ive seen on youtube.
For my building fix I will build boats for flying I will just use the helicopter.
Anyone else fly helis?

Only contras at the moment as im still learning. Tho im quite handy with a fixed wing
-
Your chance of success will improve greatly if you can get a good pilot to set it up for you.
Good luck.
I am afraid that I fly collective helos on the simulator but only contras in real life.
-
Hi I will get Model Heli pilot to set it all up,There's more to Helis than Fixed wing for sure.
Hopefully it will be nice and gentle to control.
have you seen some of the flying on you tube absolute lunacy I reckon.

I,ve had all kinds of Rc models,...but my venture into the flying kind, did,nt last long,....suffice to say,I crashed on my maiden flight,...and that was it,....lesson learned,...never take flying a model plane for granted,...getting it up was easy,...it was the getting down,...that bit was the hard part,....goodbye £175,...then i went to Tanks,& boats,....so far no disasters,

Wullie now you know why it costs so much to train a pilot

Hi you,ll enjoy flying the Heli and at least you can see what you are doin not moving at a million miles and looks good for a second on the flypass haha.
No I love me Helis have all kinds and Im like you no Lunacy I just like a Heli to be a Heli and not a supersonic disaster.
Good Luck with the Titan they are a nice machine but unfortunately I have never had real luck buying second hand machines.. But I wish you all the best in your
new Hobby.. I started with the Indoor 3 channels then moved up slowly after destroying 13 of them before I mastered the little fellahs now I enjoy my outside time also
but I still love my indoor beasties too..

Hi, I have been flying helis for about two years now. :-))
Started with a Belt CP, which was a twitchy nightmare to begin with, but with a lot of help, I was able to get it flying reasonably well. :D
Decided to perservere with it and actually learned to fly it quite well. My logic being that if I could fly this (which all the "experts" reckoned to be a horrible machine) then the bigger/better helis would be a doddle. %)
Now flying a Hurrican X50 nitro beast but never got interested in the " mad insect flying" so just sport flying for me. :-)) :-))
Take all the help and advice you are offered (especially safety advice), take your time and learn each step thoroughly, be safe and enjoy. :} :}
BTW, the bigger helis are a lot more stable than the diddy ones. ;) ;)
-
good luck! be a while before ya doing gentle circuits though... think 6 pack of xxx lager , ice skates, blindfold trying to balance a bowling on a marble... its easier than flying a heli (at first)
my advice (which is borne of experience and making a LOT of errors) get a flight sim for p.c. there is some free ones which help with stick movement and basic orientation, but very basic,
although not cheap i would buy one of the better ones , believe me when i say . . you WILL crash!! and 80 quid once can save you alot of money. make your mistakes/learn on a p.c. mighty frustrating when 2 min into spinning up you crash and have to get new rotor/tail blades, tail boom, boom supports, etc, etc. training gear.. looks a Pratt but again saves money and helps confidence. steep learning curve, flying aeros is not really gonna make it easier. having said that.... if you don't grin like fool and feel like a hero when you can achieve a stable hover which is the first and hardest step.. you will grin ... nuff said.
take your time , rushing leads to nowhere. its the hardest by far but the most rewarding to do.
p.s took me 18 month to get inverted . . and about 600 quid.. leaning by your mistakes..... bad idea.
have fun cos it is.
NIGE :-)) raptor 60 nitro and align 450 flybarless electric

And the old adage "Practice practice practice"
-
as well as scream, curse, spend and my favorite.. frustration, fustration,FRUSTRATION !
-
Hi Guys
Several sets of blades later I bought Phoenix RC simulator.
It uses your own transmitter and gives a really realistic 'feel' to what happens when you twitch the sticks.
Not cheap but cheaper than dozens of blades.
Cheers

Just about got it set up (by my reckoning) will take it to a experienced guy in local model shop to check over and hover.
I did run it up in the garden as you do,small hop then stopped, tempted though Lol.
I had to return it to beginner set up as the previous owner had it set as 3D green paddles nice blades etc.
I had to buy a new tail servo as I fried the other one but £100 for a as new Titan ready to go seems a good deal to me.
Setting the Gyro confused me a bit, never used half the functions on my Tx before but thats what they are there for I suppose.
Onwards and upwards.

Good onyah Chris thats the Spirit now will come the frustration part and the blade part and the and the haha
enjoy :-))
-
Noi think ***************************************************uggers....comes next, ...it did with me, when our cat mistook the little indoor hoverer for a burd wi nae feathers, {-)
Wullie

HAHA Wuillie thats a good one.. I call me wee Apache gunship the Cat Buster it disna like it at ah. In fact as soon as it sees the lights go on it FREAKS and hides under the bed, but then out comes the Cat Buster 2 a 1/30 Sherman haha and its got nae chance wee that either
:-))
-
Dread to to think what ive spent on spare parts.
Helis are tricky little things, dont think ill be trying to fly them for much longer. Will stick to vintage aeros and boats in future lol.

I still have an OS 20Fs in its box, ready to go, my old Robbe 4 channel 35 set and a plan for the Barnstormer 52. One day.............

Or if you don't mind building from a kit, try Martin Rouseau https://mraerodesign.securicom.ca/en/products/index.cfm?RubriqueID=4 (https://mraerodesign.securicom.ca/en/products/index.cfm?RubriqueID=4) I know it's a 415 and not a 215 but it can have working landing gear and water scoops/water drop :-))

Thats rather nice..... I might have to look into that one

I TRIED THE HELI ROUTE, I soon found out that I could crash with the best. In the space of a month I spent more on repairs than the chopper cost in the first place. Enter the BOSS, she bought me a program for my computer to learn to fly it included spektrum 5e. I was a total failure, so guess what I decided to build RC boats instead & at least put the spektrum to some use,the worst that can happen is it will sink, & if the water shallow enough I should be able to recover it.I am learning a new hobby & am fascinated by the technology & sheer scale of the hobby.. I agree totally with your comments. The only difference is I love me indoor helicopters the coax helis I can fly no problems even the big outdoor ones. They dont move forwards to well but look good. Forget me and the 2 blade jobs we are not compatabile at all.
I have also changed to Boats and of course my tanks. But for me nothing like a fast electric boat now and then the lovely slow pace of the Yachts of which I have 3 different sizes and one I am doing up i got from a deceased estate built in the 40's . Not radio control but I think you call them over there Pond Yachts. She is over a metre long so not a small boat.
But for sheer fun and quietness over petrol the fast 11.1 or 14.8 volt is fast enough. for me tks.
Armo :-))

I have just bought a Twin Rotor Beginners Heli, got it, New, for 50quid. Now when I wreck it, which I will, I can strip it down and I will have, 2 Ball raced 400 size motors, a Lipo , 7.4 volt pack with Charger, Tx and Rx on 40Mhz. with a proportional Speed controller. As this Heli steers by slowing one Rotor while speeding up the other, seems that would fit well into a twin prop boat, or am I wrong?Oh and it has a Gyro as well, now where will that go in a boat???!!
-
Haha Nordsee you have been on here long enough to use your imagine haha you will find some use for it.
But enjoy the co ax you might not crash it after all. I learned on 13 helicopters indoor size. now i fly even the bigger ones and have 13 to my collection all still flying . Its good hobby and dont have to worry about the sun, wind rain etc thats the good part.
Got a bid now on in Ebay for a fast electric boat, looks a beauty dont thiink I will will but you never know with ebay.
Cheers :-))
-
My Heli isn't an indoor model, it has a Rotor size of 52 cms, so a bit big for my lounge!

Buy an RC sim. It will save you a lot of expense even if you can fly planks. :-))
-
I have 2 HK450 all in perfect condition and Im blowed if I can get em to fly. Oh boy I really get frustrated here by meself no clubs around or other flyers for miles. costing me a fortune every prang.. Funny even with my big coax 65cms and above no problems. Ah well they look pretty good sitting on the shelf and you never know I might get an offer for them. :-))
-
Co ax to Collective pitch is a big step up and takes a lot more practice.
have they been setup properly?
the finless bob videos on helifreak are excellent

Hi
I have been flying model planes for at least 20 years. Recently I took up model helis as well and I bought a 450 3D heli. It is worth trying a simulator first. I found it very helpful.
thanks mark
-
It is worth trying a simulator first.
The best advice so far :-)) Like a few others I know - I can't get on with the ruddy things, but many more do find them very useful.
Although I can fly planes, (badly), I did find helos a lot easier to learn to fly. Trex 450, 500 and 600 and a Swift 16 that's going into a scale AH1 Cobra body when I finish it 8)
Mark
-
i bet that would look good with the body on the heli. i did buy a bell body for mine but ended up leaving it off. i will probably get around to it at some stage but i am working on a 1st world war plane at the mo from my own design.
-
This is what it shouldl look like when finished, but maybe a different scheme??

and I've just found out they are doing a e-version of their AH-64 as well now :-)

All built up from balsa and plywood :-))

Lovely work. they look really terrific. Seems to be a lot more interest where I come from now in the indoor sizes at the local fraternity.
I just sold a huey, a chinook an an apache. all coax of course but the people love em
Armo
-
i have to say, i really like that. i am tempted to build up the scale body for mine. i must stay focused on the 1st world war plane at the mo though. finding it very fustrating but satisfying when something goes right on it.
-
Which WW1 model is it? I've recently sold a 1/3 scale Fokker E.V kit to fund my boats. Sad to see it go <:(
Mark
-
I bet that was awsome plane. I am building a moraine sauliner ac. it is my own design from CAD. I am building a 1/5 scale to start. if it flies well i am looking to build 1/3 version.
