Got this today from R2 Hobbies, they would probably work on boats as well

At how to fit wipers :-))

looks good , the only problem i can see , is the size of the motor drive unit ?
-
well if the unit shown has the largest blades on 75mm the unit looks to be a 1/3 of it's size so it's not that big, It was just an idea.

Mounted mine up side down in the Tugs bridge angled up into the Monkey island open bridge with small spring for flexi shaft works great buy all my 2.4 r/c gear from them as well great pricing tassie48
-
have you got a picture or can you tell me the size was my guess correct /
thanks
peter
-
i was thinking of using it in my current spear project , the problem being the wipers mount above the screen ? tassie do you know if its possible to link a pair of wiper arms to a single drive unit ?
-
i have only one problem, well two really, with putting working windscreen wipers on a boat.
1] the cost of them and fiddly messing about with them, either home built or bought, and
2] come on all of you, own up......how many of you sail in any kind of weather that would make then justifiable, and if they work, on a bright sunny day.....what's the point in them at all.
I know i certainly don't sail in that sort of weather {-) {-) %% %% %%

Have good look ay Post No 3

My local club runs on a salt water lake, none of our models have developed issues with the salty water, remember to just wash down the boat with fresh water afterwards re-oil or grease the shafts and your good to go, there seams to be a very bad stigma that salt water is the downfall of many model boats, although its not totally untrue as it can cause premature ageing of the model but on the whole the technology is much the same as a real boat and yet some sit in the water for years on end with only a new anti foul coat every few years.
Remember the models are in the water for only a few hours maybe once, twice a month on average, now unless you have a capsize or sinking i can't see how salt water would cause issues with any extra feature such as a working radar or wipers , providing you clean the model after use as good general maintenance.
This does not apply to lighting as bulbs do blow, the only issues with any model that generally occurs over a period of time is 'black cable' where the water/damp/condensation may have built up in the wiring causing it to become brittle and break, or get hot and make the model sluggish if its a motor wire. It can also lead to battery damage, but this is a common issues with all boats.
Also be aware that its not everyone preference to have 'lots of features' on there model(s) but some do , its a personal choice of the builder, some people like myself enjoy it when there's something to add or fix on a model, keeping not only the model alive, but showing the changes over time, not only in the model but your own skills and creativity.
These 'extras' are usually pre-planned during the building stage and i would hope that many allow access to parts should something go wrong, allowing for a relatively simple repair with out damage to the model.
Remember your building the model for yourself no one else so don't get drawn in on what others think about your extra feature's or there 'lack of' if you want wipers and radar then go for it, me personally i like the extra features, it not only add's character to the model, it looks more realistic, and shows the time and attention you took to improve on what otherwise would be a simple model. :-))

Topic cleaned up. :-)

hi roadrunner, it's not actually the saltwater that does for electrics and electronics when sailing on that stuff, but the humidity of salt in the air........we have constantly up here been plagued with the stuff from time imemorium..that is what rots the wires and kernackers wiring..............i can sail for just one season with new equipment and by the end of it, have "black wire" throughout. and for me, it's just not worth putting in expensive electronic wizardry................
-
Im not sure why you would have so many issues with a more 'salty humidity' as i said im also in a sea side town (sort of) we would be subject to the same conditions and yet very few faults have popped up.
I will make a suggestion that may be more cost effective then tearing out your wiring each season. Purchase some silica gel packs, a cleaver bit of tec that absorbed water in the air in enclosed spaces, more commonly found in a tv box or other electrical item where damp could occur while stored in a warehouse or during transportation. packs will last in a boat maybe around 4 weeks before swapping for a new one.
look at these links
http://www.travelwithcare.com/products/SilicaGel5-179.html (http://www.travelwithcare.com/products/SilicaGel5-179.html)
http://www.simplyscuba.com/products/Intova/SilicaGelPacks.aspx (http://www.simplyscuba.com/products/Intova/SilicaGelPacks.aspx)
you can pay a lot or a little just depends where you get them but they all do the same job, a large boat would require something like 2 or 3 packs in the boats hull but remember to swap them out, you can tell when, as the packs swell and become very gel like, normally they should be a little bag of hard beads.
Im pretty sure this will be cheaper then replacing wiring every season, hell you never know you may even chance a 'extra feature' of your own if your boats not having issues!

Friends..we can make a wiper actuator from a simple toy gear box..if the craft is sized to 1:35th scale its more easy to do...by fixing a cam from a piece of foam board, we can simply adjust the stroke of the wiper arm as we needs...
-
I use one of these on my windows only 6mm dia for a Kent Clear View

cheers roadrunner, i'll try those................do you have to replace them after a certain period of time or do thay last for an age. neil.
-
When they turn from a thin pack of solid beads to a squishy gel pack its time to replace them. leave them in the boat even when not on the water in storage. just something to watch out for is there life span, i suggested around 4 weeks life span but really they can go on for 6 months at a time, better safe then sorry though.
-
thanks for your help.......much appreciated..........if they work, might even consider putting lightd on my boats in future.
neil.
-
I can assure you that silica beads work - I had to lay up my yacht every winter for about 5months in Corfu which is very wet in winter
we used to leave two kilos of silica beads in the galley sink in a plastic mesh container - even though the boat had been sealed up for 5 months it was
not musty smelling and all upholstery was bone dry. It is also very cheap to buy from boat chandlers in kilo packs which would last an age in several model
boats. I forgot to put them in one year (in a hurry to catch the ferry home) and it took about three weeks to dry the boat out on my return - so yes it works

If you wish Silica Gel can be dryed out and reused.A warm oven is ideal. John

cheers guys.......didn't realise it was so effective.

Friends..along with a water sprayer we can also try this wiping arm can be made from simple handy things...i posted an aricle about making this wiper actuator in Begginners section..and see a nice VIDEO here...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6DXutnwW-I
