I hope these are of some use.
If you are ever in the Portsmouth area and want to know what is moving and when, type in on that internet thingy  QHM Portsmouth  and follow the link to movements. The next days movements are usually up by lunchtime. Beware that they also list cold moves and basin movements on the list, so you could be waiting for a vessel that has just been stuck in drydock!!   For those who know, what does SOSA stand for top left on their page, it usually relates to a ship??
Title: Re: The start of something new
Post by: pugwash on March 15, 2011, 08:03:54 pm
When you check back at other dates for movements you notice it SOSA is usually listed as a fairly big ship like a carrier or T45 so I am guessing it just
indicates the Senior officer of the ships that are in the dockyard on that date

Post by: AT Boatyard on March 19, 2011, 08:39:53 pm
Hi all my fellow Mayhemers, Well another busy week of building. We are now at the half way stage in time of the build. This weekend is the 10th working week of the build. We now have nine working weeks to get her painted and on the water. Three quarters of the super structure is now built and by the end of next week the hull will be complete. All the mechanical parts are being put into the stern section this weekend. Next month the hull and super structure will be finished and painted leaving 3 weekends in May for testing and finishing off as much as we can, ready for it's maiden voyage at the Mayhem weekend at Wicksteed Park. There will be more detail to be added as the year goes on, now that all three stages of the hull are built it feels like we can now see the end of the project in sight.
Here are a few pictures for you to glance over.

regards
AT

PS A big thankyou to  unbuiltnautilus for the pictures

AT,

I have only just spotted this thread and will be fascinated to see how you get on because I built a 1/32nd Type 42 (in fact still building!) for an attempt on the Guinness world record for distance covered in 24 hours:

I am slowly making all the fittings for it but there is still a long way to go and you have done very well indeed to get so much achieved so far - mine took almost 2 years before it got into the water.

What power for what sort of performance are you planning?  I needed two 150W motors (6 amps at 24V each) on a displacement of about 300lbst o get a speed of about 8 feet per second  which is close to economic max speed - I could get more speed but would need much more power - and the T42 Batch 3 hull is quite a bit slimmer than the T45?  Want a race sometime?

If there are any common fittings between T42 and T45 that I have already done you are welcome to have a copy - I suspect there aren't many though as much of the T45 is new.

Good luck with this as it goes forward

Hi Francis,
What an honour to have someone like yourself following this build.
Well your world record of 121.5 miles has stood for a long time. One of the reasons for building this ship is an attempt to break your record and also try for a new record
furtherest distance travelled by a model boat and on one set of battery's. The displacement weight of the type 45 is 230kg to 250kg it measures in at 4.8 metres long.
We are looking for her to carry 10 x 24ah battery's and also 2 x 40ah battery's a total of 320ah's.
The battery's act as power as well as ballast. I know you said that you powered yours on 24 volt so lowering the amp usage but we are using 12 volt motors and gearing
them down. We estimate our power usage at full speed at between 4 and 5 amps per motor so possibly giving us 32 hours of running. We have already built 2 large models
using this system and found it very economical on power. I will pm you on some links of these models running because if I put it on this thread our identity comes out and we
are not ready for that yet. As regards the offer of a race maybe it is something we should do one day in the name of fun. Thankyou for the offer of the fittings that is very kind
of you. Look forward to meeting you one day.

kind regards
AT

Hi AT,

I'm really pleased to find someone taking up the distance challenge at last - have you seen the article I did for MMI on the record run in 2002 as this covered most of the likely problems you might encounter during a prolonged running session?  If not I can send on a text copy.

Have you a venue for a record attempt in mind?  The longer the straight runs the better to minimise the proportion of time at lower speed on the turns.

Also are you going to give the outside of the hull a coat of resin over thin glass cloth?  That gave the Gloucester hull a lot of its strength.

I'll keep an eye out for your pm and hope your trials go well when you get on the water.

Francis

Title: Re: The start of something new(SHE NOW HAS POWER)
Post by: AT Boatyard on April 09, 2011, 07:00:40 pm
Hi all of you followers out there in Mayhem land,
today I spent time fitting speed contorllers, inline fuses and making extension leads to reach back to the receiver.
The motors, gear boxes and steering servo are all fitted now and working.
The motors are 2 x graupner bb 900 torque.
Gear boxes are built in two stages reducing 2.1:1 twice = a total reduction of 4.2:1.
The rudders set over at the angle they are, give you the same effect as the steering on the car (the acamand principal)
namely the inner rudder on the turn, turns in more than the outer rudder so causing you less drag.
Here are some up to date photos for you to browse over.

Hi all you mayhemers out there. Today we had a visitor at the boatyard. Phil Knell from Cygnets Model Boat Club
in Kent came up to see us. He had a bit of a shock because if you come to the boatyard you have to get your
hands dirty and muck in. I think he enjoyed himself anyway and maybe learnt a trick or two. thanks for your help
today Phil. Hope that you make it to Wicksteed at the of May.
All the decks are now fitted, filler work is finished and the combing is on for the main super structure.
Here are some photo's of today, more to come tomorrow.

as the boys say above after a lot of nagging they let me go up to see the boat today. hell of a journey but well worth it. no matter how you look at the pictures on the forum and there website they do not do this justice. in the flesh it is enormous. not just the length but the sheer bulk of it. also the quality of the work involved is excellent. i spent about 9 hours with them today and nearly all of that was spent filling and sanding the bow section of the hull. the end result is spot on.

thanks for the visit guys and look forward to seeing the end result at wickstead.

Hi my fellow Mayhemers, yet another very busy day down at the boatyard but what a lot achieved today.
It is really starting to look good, the lines of the ship are looking fabulous and we now feel that we are
over the hill and on the way down towards completion. It is getting to the stage now where it is hard to drag
yourself away at the end of the day, we have spent over 12 hours today on the ship but it only felt as if
we had only been going 3 or 4 hours. This has become a fun build for us.
Anyway here are some pictures for you to browse through, enjoy.

Hats off to you all who are involved in this fantastic build, 2 questions from an amateur, 1) how are you going to carry the three parts of the vessel? Each part will weigh approx 8o kilos.   2) How are you going to get her into the water? With a crane of some sort or will you use a launching trolley? Where do you find the time for all this!??

Post by: AT Boatyard on May 06, 2011, 06:12:41 pm
Hi Nordsee, the answers to your questions.
1.The total hull weighs is 80kg and the tops 25kg total model =105kg.
Then we have 140kg battery's going in to the hull when its on the water.
2.We are making a portable slipway to get it in and out of the water.
3.Its a labour love you have to make time.
No TV,going out,15 hour days at weekends and bank holidays.
A lot of hard work.
Thank you for your kind comments.
kind regards

Post by: AT Boatyard on May 18, 2011, 12:07:39 am
Hi all of my fellow Mayhemers,
This evening at 7.00pm we launched the hull at Mote Park Maidstone.
The portable slipway we designed for the ship worked great.
We filled her up with batteries (around 140 kilos), connected the power to
the control box, turned the radio on and away she went. The first couple of laps we took
steady and as our confidence built up we pushed her a bit faster, as the hour long
procession progressed, she picked up more speed as all of the new parts started to
wear in. I would just like to thank Phil Knell for his assistance getting her down the lake.
Ray and Margaret Milliken for their support and for the bottle of fizz to christen her with.
She was offically christened by my wife Debbie and I would like to thank her very much for
her support. Now to let you know who we are. the name of the two builders of this mamouth
project are myself, Alan Noble and Trevor Bright together with Phil, Debbie, Ray and Margaret we
make up  AT Boatyard. well i think a few pictures now
kind regards

Well done guys on a first class job, I hope to see it in all its glory at Alfold or Hop Farm? Our Ohio build seemed to be proceeding at a breakneck pace, but you guys have shown everyone what a bit of extra effort can achieve. Like the launching ramp, I assume it disassembles for transport? Dont be surprised if you see a similar ramp launching our HMS Victory in the future!

A brillant launch guys,........  O0

We also get to see those propellors in true perspective scale   :o

Even from 22,000 km away.........a supurb effort.....Derek  :-))

Saw there were a couple of questions so a quick answer.

recovery was exact reverse of the launch. drop the ramp end in the water pull bow onto it, pull boat up the ramp and lower ramp end

took 2 people 10 seconds and virtually no effort.

the ramp splits in the middle and is held together with 4 coach bolts

gone from 140 watt motors to 1500 watt motors. i don't think it will be underpowered any more.

going down the lake during the week sometime to test will vid and post.

will have to take the water ski's

Hi everyone out there in Mayhemland,i have been building up the brushless set up for the type 45.
I am having a test day at Mote Park Maidstone on Sunday.
The motors i am using are E Max BL4030/10, KV385 ,1500w.
The ESC are 80A HV Seaking
I am runing on 24volt.
I am going to continue using the 4.2:1 reduction.
So motor speed @ 24volt =9240 rpm - 4.2:1 reduction =2200 prop speed.
I have around 500 rpm more than i need, but it is nice to have abit in reserve.
I am fitting it own self contained water cooling system using modern car coolant.
I feel put lake water through pricey ESC is not a good move.
Well here are some picture

Lake water wont affect the ESC's , the cooler is a separate aluminium block, in fact I doubt it will need any cooling . It does add to the cool factor though, Like Toesup's MHT with the working keel coolers.  :}

Look forward to seeing the test results :-)

Post by: AT Boatyard on July 01, 2011, 08:04:34 pm
Hi everyone,I have now fitted brushless motors into my Type 45.
The cooling system is in and working fine.
The water pump has it own ESC.
So the faster the motors turn, the faster the water is pumped around
I am looking forwards to trying it out on Sunday.
I should be at Mote park from around 11am.
so if you are around Maidstone sunday come and see her go.
I will take some video, and put it on Sunday night.
Here are some pictures of the set up.

Hi everyone, especially you Alan,

Well I thought that I would have a look and see how the boat is coming on.

The boat is coming along great but there is one thing.
What is my new tupperware box doiing inside your boat.
You are in trouble BIG trouble.  <*< <*< >>:-( >>:-(
No dinner for you tonight!!!

Think I might have to go throught the rest of these pictures to see what other
bits and pieces belong to me.

I wonder how many more of you use boxes etc.. that were in the kitchen cupboard and
are now part of your boats. Wives/partners beware.

Well have a good day everyone.

take care
Debs xx

Hi everyone, well got down the lake at 11am.
Had the boat in the water by 11.45am.
Over the moon with the performance.
Got to make some new and better coupling,as we blew the couling with the power of the motors.
As for the motors and ESC,s not even geting warm.
We had it runing for over 1hour before the couling blew up.

That's a big improvement over the brushed motors :-))  Have you made any comparison of the amp draw between the 2 set-ups. What sort of coupling was it that blew? I couldn't see a pic of it?

Did you happen to check the coolant temp after the run.

Hi all you lot out in Mayhemland i have two new brushless motors.
They are only 195kv,the old one's were 385kv.
Lower kv more torque, also less gearing.
They also run on higher voltage,so lower amp use.
Runing at Southend Model Boat Club next Sunday.
So maybe see you there.

Hi Everyone,We had a great day at Southend on Sunday.
It was the first run on the new bigger brushless motors.
She also now only has one reduction set of gears (2.75:1)
She run very well and very smooth.
The motors run nice and cold.
We are very happy with the new set up.
It was very wind on the day,But unlike Wicksteed Park we had the power to handle it.
We also run our 1:12 scale Tid Tug.

That looks a windy day there Alan  {:-{........just a few questions :D

1. do Type 45's run one or two turbines for standard mode travel?
2. if two........do Action manufacture a multi turbine sound card...or would the sound of two turbines under the same load = the sound of one turbine?
3. either way I think the acoustics of a turbine sound module would enhance the model

Last but not least .......would you not be better considering ZZ or LLU sealed ball races in the final drive below the motors  prior to the inboard coupling shaft?

Derek :-))

OK....I have just checked the Action site...& also GOOGLED the same question......who manufactures a gas turbine model sound card/module?
Title: Re: The start of something new

i would be very surprised if you could hear the turbines from outside the hull or at any distance.

if you could it would make it a bit easy for enemy subs.

Hi Kenny, thank you yes it good fun now.
As for the price of the motors £39.52 each+p&p.Not a lot for a motor that over 5hp

http://www.giantcod.co.uk/epower-bl5345-195kv-brushless-outrunner-motors-p-402690.html

Then there is the price of esc's £71.01 each+p&p. this because i am running 36volts

http://www.giantcod.co.uk/seaking80ahv-brushless-boat-version-p-405851.html

This one would do the job if you are running up to 22volts at £49.18 each

Looks great, Wake looks much closer to scale

5.3 Hp 3900 watts, 110 amps, 3 hours running on 24 AH ok2 Methinks the actual amp draw is a lot less :}, I would love to stick a clamp meter on it at full throttle.

Hi Nick,Thank you for your comments.
We were on  3/4 throttle most of the time.
On full throttle she did not go faster,so i think we are at the hulls limit.
We have enough speed to try for the 24 hour distance record.
We are going to do more testing soon.

In two weeks time we will be at the Boat museun Ellesmere Port.
This will be its first time on the water this year.
We are looking forward to this show as we have to date not travelled to this part of the country.
As a 1:32 scale model it should look good with all the tugs that go to this show.
well time to get some work done.

Hi everyone,
The date and venue for the Guiness World Record attempt has now been set.
The venue will be at Mote Park Maidstone on Saturday 21st July 2012.
We are hoping to start at around 10.30am and finishing 10.30am on Sunday 22nd July.
We will be using the finish of the challenge to open our club, Cygnets Model Boat Clubs,
annual regatta, Boats on the Mote.
You are more than welcome to come along and support us and also if you are coming on
the Sunday you are more than welcome to attend Boats on the Mote. (I.C. welcome).
At Boats on the Mote there will be a buffet in the afternoon for a small charge.
Dont forget we will be putting the type 45 on the water for the first time this year at
Ellesmere Port Boat Museum on the 3rd and 4th March.
Look forward to seeing you at either of the events.

Hi Dave,
You are going to need more than your gas stove Dave. Remember you are one of the skippers.
So you will need match sticks to keep your eyes open, but don't worry Debbie will keep us going
with coffee, tea and of course cake. You can have a feel of what the boat is like on the water at
Ellesmere Port this weekend.
Look forward to seeing you Saturday.

Hi Everyone,We are at Ellsmere Port this weekend.Had a good day at the show.
Had the ship on the water, but we are down one on motor as one of the esc has gone down.
Had the tug of war,but only with three tug no contest.
Phil thinks you would need around 20 tugs @1:32 scale to stop her.
We have been made very welcome at this show and we will be back next year with a lot of boats on show.
We are back there inthe morning so if you are around this way come and say hi.
Her are some pictures of today.
kind reards

I have fitted two new speed controllers today.
They are hobbyking plug and play.
They are 125amp.
No setting up all done for you, also under £20.00+p&p.
Guiness have said that we can only use 24volts so no need for HV esc's
Hopeing to do some testing over the next two weeks.

Alan

Post by: AT Boatyard on September 27, 2012, 10:46:38 am
Hi everyone,it has been some time now,but we are back.
2013 is going to be a big year for the type 45.
She has a lot of miles to do in two big events.
This will be a test on man and model.
Phil has been working very hard in the back ground.
Emailing and making phone calls to lots of people.
We are looking to involve as many clubs and of course Mayhemers as possible.
The two main aims of the biggest of the two events is to raise as much money as possible
for charity and promote model boating.
Keep your eyes peeled for more announcements.

kind regards
Alan and of course the team.

Title: Re: AT Boatyard's - Giant 'Type 45' destroyer(THE RIVER THAMES RUN)
Post by: AT Boatyard on October 09, 2012, 08:10:25 pm
Well everyone what are we looking to do in 2013 ????????????
We are going for the furthest distance non stop by a RC model boat.
So we will keep going until the batteries are flat or the ship brakes down !!!!!!! (it will not brake down).

Then we will be off to Lechlade in Gloucestershire to start the journey down the Thames to Greenwich in London (around 150 miles).
We are looking to do the journey in four to five days.
It would be good to involve as many model boat culbs and Mayhemers as we can,on our journey down the Thames.
Also if you have a full size boat come and join in.
Maybe when we stop in the evenings we could put some model boats on the water ?????
This will be a charity event raising money for The Royal British legion.
If you can help with promiting or just generally assisting please contact me.
Also ideas of things we can do on the way down also contact me.
Look forward to hearing your ideas and views.

kind regards
Alan,Phil and all the team

hi all members of the black park club did a shorter thames run some years ago.....to raise money for a local heart unit,

we followed the models in 2 full size craft......

we did a 70 odd mile stretch of the thames - in daylight hours only and that took 3 solid days....from first light to dusk

my first comment would be good luck, - the second would be check your timings- the biggest hold ups were waiting ot get tinto locks with the following full size craft...

but it was fantastic to run into well known spots like henley marlow and windsor with a fleet of models  steaming down the river

i am sure we can get some club members involved  in the berskshire area to join you sail ing through....
