Hi there all, this is my current project to finish off. It's a 1/10 scale FCB2 (Fast Carriage Boat 2), she's some 54" long so a fair size. The boat was intended to replace the Mersey Class lifeboat but this design has now been shelved and another design is on the cards. The hull and cabin moudings are available from Models By Design and is of their usual very high quality, they also do it in 1/16 scale: http://www.modelsbydesign.co.uk/ (http://www.modelsbydesign.co.uk/)
I bought her late last year off debssnal, he'd fitted the twin Graupner jet drives. Each drive is powered by almost 1hp brushless motors. There are 2x 100amp ESC'S. It can be run on 12volt which is around scale speed, can also run on 24volt which is insane. Couple of clips on youtube posted by Alan of the boat in action:
youtube.com/watch?v=Jn2QxbhaJUs (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Jn2QxbhaJUs)
youtube.com/watch?v=Qa5wBkClicI (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Qa5wBkClicI)
I am intending to finish her off as if she'd gone into service, in full RNLI colours. She won't be 'exactly' 100% as the prototype boat but a 'what may have been' Lifeboat. She should be good fun on the lake and fairly unique. I'm hoping to have her finished for the Ellesmere Show in March and will hopefully be able to run her there. I'm planning on painting her all white below the waterline, anyone have any thoughts on this? I think if she'd gone on station she'd be on a carriage, not kept moored. More to come as she progresses. Dave. :-))
-
Hi Dave,
I hope you are aware that the RNLI are not going to be using that hull design for FCB2 as there were some issues with it during its trials. there is a bit about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FCB2_experimental_lifeboat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FCB2_experimental_lifeboat).
That said "Effseabee Too" it is still a interesting and unique piece of RNLI lifeboat development to build a model off and you don't see many models of lifeboats with "Experimental Lifeboat" on the back.
The reason I was told for the rethink on the hull design was that in certain sea conditions the crews comfort and safety was put at risk and unacceptable and in these conditions it could be out performed by a Mersey.
-
Hi there Johno, yes I was told about the problems with the design. Think they did try same shape hull but with skegs fitted to improve ride and stability but it still wasn't right so they came up with the current design on RNLI website. Think it will make into an interesting and fairly unique model boat though. Cheers, Dave. :)
-
Have you managed respray it today matey?
Russ
-
Not sprayed it yet, had to do some filling here and there. Will hopefully prime it tomorrow and get the hull all painted up in the week. Got the superstructure ready to be worked on too. Got to make up some detail bits for it from scratch then that can be painted. The hardest part is going to be the stern railings, that's what I'm going to need the brass rod for, all good practice for the Severn though! If you have a moment can you measure how big the yellow lettering is on the back of your Tamar or Tyne? Going have to get some. Are we sailing tomorrow, weather permitting? Or just go for an all day breakfast instead! Dave. :-)) :-))
-
You two normally sail and have an all day breakfast anyway.

-
Hi Dave, looking good mate.If you get to run it at Ellesmere.I would say that 12volt will be what you would run it on, as there is not that much water there,(but up to you mate).I am hoping to be there so if you need some help set the boot up.
kind regards
Alan
-
Hi Alan, thanks for that. May need some help with the set up. Hopefully will be running up there, not the biggest of sailing areas so will keep it on 12v like you say. What ah batteries did you have in? Did have note of it but can't find it. Is Debs coming up too? Hope she's ok? See you soon hopefully, Dave.
-
Hi Dave, 2x7ah or 1x12ah
She you there

Not today John, the waitress was having a lye-in O0
-
Managed to do some more over last couple of days. Finished most of the work on the rear lockers and made up the rear door. There aren't many photos about so I'm basing some of the layout on existing Lifeboat designs. More to come soon, Dave. :-)
-
looking mighty good there dave.....will this be joining us on Loch Ness to lead the way :-))
neil.
http://www.justgiving.com/lochnessscalesail
-
Thanks Neil, hopefully she'll be ok for the Loch Ness run. I 'll have to do some trial runs to see what kind of power she's drawing, I wouldn't think she'd be too bad really, she's quite light for her size so I can hopefully squeeze in a couple more batteries for an endurance run. More pics of her to come soon. Dave. :-)) :-))
-
great stuff..she'll look good I'm sure. :-))

Blimey mate did she kick you out of bed! {-)

More work done today as too much rain and wind to go sailing. Dave.
-
Looking very very nice :-))
Paul
-
I will second that, looking good Dave :-))
-
what ever happened toyour old rib, russ....the one made from neoprene that you once had on fleebay.
http://www.justgiving.com/lochnessscalesail
-
I bought the RIB off Russ, another one to finish off. %) %) %) Thanks for the comments, will be starting on the mast framework soon. Dave. :-)) :-))
-
ahhh, that's where it went....always thought it would make a good Valentijn Class jet drive such as Caister's independent lifeboat, or a medina class...both great lookers.
neil.
http://www.justgiving.com/lochnessscalesail
-
Could do Caister Lifeboat, or KNRM Lifeboat, have got pics of another version too. Dave. ok2
-
those ribs look different ! its nice to see some variation .
-
dutch design and built.....all water jet drive and fast too..

-
Made a start on the brass work over the weekend but didn't get as much done as I would have liked. {:-{ She's getting there though, hope to get started on the rear railings tomorrow, Dave. :-))
-
Tidy brass work there Dave :-))
Paul
-
I bet Russ the King of bling would love to polish those rails for you Dave. O0
-
Thanks Paul, plenty of practice over the years. Plus too expensive to keep making mistakes!
Hi John, Pirate Russ won't get the chance to do any polishing! Shame they're to be sprayed black and orange! Cheers, Dave. O0
-
This boat is looking very good
when you do get it out on water next, can you video it .
I know its on you tube already, but would be nice to see more of this boat O0
phill :-))
-
Hi there, I'll be posting some video of her on the water when done. I've got some more build photos of her to post but can't find the lead to connect camera to laptop. :( She's not far off being painted, have finished the stern railings, got all the holes for stanchions sorted, radar/aerial framework all done. Was going to take her to Ellesmere if finished but won't be ready in time, don't want run a nearly done half primered boat. She'll be at Wickstead and the model lifeboat days in Leicester and Stockport. Possibly Warington and Blackpool too. Thanks for the positive comments, she's starting to look the part now, cheers, Dave. :)
-
Looking very good.
Makes me think my next project should be one of the new Port Phillip pilot boats
-
that's a nice looking boat Brian....what's the hull configuration??
-
Looking very good.
Makes me think my next project should be one of the new Port Phillip pilot boats
That looks very nice, would make a great model! Any plans or drawings anywhere?? Dave. :-)) :-))
-
The boat is a ORC 18.1 mt. Pilot Boat built locally from design by:-
Pantocarene Naval Architects
24 bd de la rade, Arzon, 56640, France
Phone: 33 297 482369
Email Address: [email protected]
The builders were Hart Marine who have several more pictures on their website:-
www.hartmarine.com.au
Definitely an odd hull shape but there are some difficult rips through the entrance to Port Phillip bay.
Mornington is not far from us so I might be able to visit Hart Marine if no information is forthcoming.
She has been named 'Arkuna' and must be about version 4 or 5 since the name was originally given to a German steam launch captured in WW1 and used by the pilots and has been used for several other of their vessels.
-
The hull shape certainly works:-

I don't think I will be a pilot or lifeboatman is any future life {:-{
-
WOWEEEE!!! that is something special..................would make a fantastic model.
-
A very impressive boat on the videos and it seems to work well in a long swell - unfortunately not seen in really rough weather as that is the true test for a lifeboat. The crew comfort
is paramount in bad conditions - no use getting somewhere very fast if the crew are in no condition to conduct the rescue when they arrrive.
It would make a great model but I wouldn't fancy trying to make to hull from scratch.
Geoff
-
Remember it's a pilot boat not a lifeboat.
In really rough weather the ships they go out too, would not be able to get through the 'Heads' so the pilot would not go out.
Should make an interesting model at 1:16 and I suspect the hull would have to be fibreglass.
I am certainly thinking about it but it won't be until next year, there is still a long way to go on my H.M.A.S. Ararat.
-
it'd have to be 1;12 scale for me brian........lovely at that scale. :-)).....if you build a plug and mould for one at 1;12 scale i'll put an order in now, for definite.
neil. O0 O0
-
Unfortunately 1.5 metres long won't fit in our car. <:(
Anyway it will be a long time coming. I have only just started the superstructure of Ararat and there is a lot of detail to be added.
I am waiting for more pictures from No.6 of his lifeboat for even more inspiration. O0 O0
-
Im working today but got camera sorted so I'll post some more pictures later on. Off to Ellesmere tomorrow hopefully! :)
-
where's russ......got one brief message from him the other day and that was it......is he working away, Dave?
-
He's is about Neil. He's had ANOTHER convertible so he's probably sitting in the rain polishing it %%
-
I should be seeing him tomorrow Neil if we go to the Ellesmere show, I'll let him know you're after him. I know he's been sorting his car out and other stuff. Cheers, Dave. :)
-
where's russ......got one brief message from him the other day and that was it......is he working away, Dave?
I am still here Neil, just been tied up with other things ( not the convertible) >>:-(
How's the build coming on mate?
-
It's alright matey.......finished the construction and building now.......just a matter of painting all the bits and sticking them on where they shoud go.........now that's the tricky part lol O0 O0 O0
-
I hope you have downloaded your sponsor forms from my email, ready to take to Ellesmere port tomorrow......prime time to cajoul all those modellers out of their hard earned brass........you know it makes sense, lol.
-
Back to the FCB build, some more photos of the work so far. Will be working on her again tomorrow. I got some bits and pieces from Ellesmere today that will speed up the build. More pictures tomorrow hopefully, Dave. :-))
-
cracking work Dave......superb brasswork.
-
Hi mate, looking good.
it was good seeing you two today.
i will get the bits for the jets of to you in the next day or so.
i will let you know when they are in the post.
kind regards
Alan
-
Hi there Alan, many thanks for that. Nice to see you yesterday. The Ellesmere show was good again this year, blessed with great weather too. I think some more of the regular traders at the other shows should consider attending too. See you and Debs at Wicksteed, won't be long now, Dave & Aud. :-)) :-))
-
Hi Dave she's looking good, where did you get the fairleads and mooring bollards from , and are they 10th scale ? might save me making them if they are.
Paul
-
Hi there Paul, the bollards and fairleads are 1/12 Speedline ones robbed off my Severn class kit for now. They're slightly smaller than they should be but I'm raising them about 2mm off the deck and they look fine. Maybe slight size difference doesn't stand out much because it's not a lifeboat many people are familiar with? Adrian from Speedline will supply fittings separately, just give him a call if you want something. What boat are you building? Cheers, Dave. :)
-
What boat are you building? Cheers, Dave. :)
Thanks for the info Dave, there for my Trent I need them in 10th scale, so I'll make them
Paul
-
Thought they'd be got to be for your Trent. Yes, they'll need to be the correct size or it'll stand out like a sore thumb. {:-{ Have you tried Waverley Models, though 1/10 bit of an odd scale. Looking forward to seeing the Trent finished. Dave. :-))
-
Hi there all, rain this morning put me off going lakeside so did some more work on the FCB2. She'll hopefully be ready for painting this week. I've got to make some more fittings for the superstructure and aerial array, I should have got a radar from Ellesmere last week but forgot, there's always something! Got to make a delta anchor and it's stowage for the bow and the pair of lifebelt stowage points for the stern railings, there's a slot to cut out on the bow for where the cable for the carriage sits. I've also got to make up a pair of small skegs that were fitted to the later prototypes before the project was shelved.
After speaking to several people I've changed my mind about the finished overall look of the boat and am going to be doing her as the 'Experimental Lifeboat' I've got my information from. She won't be 100% accurate but fairly close I'm hoping. I should (will) have her completed for Wicksteed, Dave. :-))
-
Its coming along very nicely Dave.
-
Looking good dave.i will get them bits of to you this week

Thanks Alan, did all the handrails round the rear of the cabin today and pretty much finished off the aerial/radar array. Superstructure should be ready for priming by the end of the day, should be working tomorrow so won't be spraying until Friday, or the weekend. {:-{ I'm not rushing her now as her first major public outing will be at Wicksteed as I missed getting her ready for Ellesmere. Still undecided about what to do with the windows, whether to cut them out or not? My Solent's got mirror sheet where the glazing should be and frames as normal. On the water this looks quite effective as it reflects the water and surroundings. I may do this for now and cut them out later, real frames on the FCB are much thinner than usual lifeboat frames so would be quite a challenge to do properly. Our Yorkies Jojo and Kimmy were hanging around all day, offering advice and support, especially when I'd got the gas heater on! Dave. :-)) :-))
-
Hi Number 6....I particully like the scale 4 bolt square flanges that will attach the brass work structure to the hull upperworks :-))
I too have decided to attempt some scale pipe flanges [OD tube 1/8" & 5/32"] in my long standing build here in OZ.........de-oiler/condensor image attached .......Derek
PS the manufacturer of my tube flanges is [email protected] ....... www.modellbau-niggel.de .....& the bolts in the flanges are M2 x 6 long
The flange sets are o-ring sealed...... O0
-
Looks good Derek, thanks for the link, always handy to have details of suppliers. Finished dusting and the hoovering round the house now so going to do a bit more. Got long day tomorrow delivering up in the Lake District so won't be doing much more until Friday. Cheers, Dave. :-))
-
Hi there all, the good weather of the last couple of days has meant a start could be made on the painting. Usual Halfords acryllic aerosols used, think I should qualify as a shareholder now! %) Primed the superstructure in white as I find this is best for the VW brilliant orange. I couldn't resist putting the RNLI flag on her, and before anyone says it, <*< I know the FCB2 didn't have the 'Lifeboats' writting on it but this one does as I think it should have done. It'll also be having the usual red/yellow stripe below the rubber fendering as I think it doesn't look right without it! Dave. O0 O0 O0
-
looking very very nice indeed, dave..........will look beautiful on the lake. :-))
neil.
-
Some more done today, Some more fittings sprayed and fitted the windows for now, mirror finish inserts to be put on when the sheet arrives. The windows will be cut out eventually and proper frames made up for them, but I'll tackle that at a later date! O0 Done the lettering on the transom, 'Experimental Lifeboat' not seen that on many models. I have sourced some fendering that looks right scale for the FCB2 which is about twice the size of that on the Severn in real life, trouble is that it looks too big and bulky. I may use some 1/12 Severn fendering which looks more in proportion, not exactly as it should be but it looks better and the model isn't meant to be a 100% accurate replica. Working tomorrow and Saturday so won't be doing much more to her this week, it'll give the paint more time to dry properly I suppose. Dave. ;)
-
Hi Dave come on well.
Bit in the post today
regards
Alan
-
Many thanks Alan, looking forward to getting her on the water, probably a week on Sunday. I'll be careful, will run her on 12v for a while until I get used to her then will have to have a go on 24v! Soon be Wicksteed, take it easy, Dave. :-))
-
Some more pictures of the progress so far, nearly finished off the radar area, just needs spraying completing. Fendering and more markings added, I know she shouldn't really have the red/yellow stripe but she just doesn't look like a proper lifeboat without it. Fitted the rear steps in place and more fittings added. Some more detail parts to do, most noticeably round the bow where the cable for the carriage would fit. Won't get much more done today as have to go to work, hoping for a maiden voyage soon but am waiting on a few parts I've ordered for the servo linkages so won't be going anywhere without those. More to come over the weekend, Dave. :-))
-
Excellent Dave, it should look great on the water
Geoff
-
Very nice Dave :-)). I know what I will be building when I finish the Trent .
Paul
-
looks good :)
-
Fantastic Dave..... :-))
Will you be at Doncaster or Harrogate?
-
I liked it so much I have been and bought one tonight, needs a tidy but its very nice, kitted out with brushless motors and ESCs and 4 lipos..... Can wait for tomorrow eve... :}

Here's one to interest you guys.........AWESOME!!!!!!!

-
that looks another great build, congrats! I suppose it is old news now but I think the FCB2 is to be named the Shannon Class?
-
:} ... sorry guys.....but in OZ we usually moor our rescue vessels in water.......was this intended? .....is the vessel designed for this type of beaching? ....
If this continues I can see an additional job for an NDT inspector & a specialist TIG welder.........Derek %%

hi ,
yes. to your question..specifically designed for fast beach approach to offload casualties in the fastest possible time.......this is the reason why it has taken so long to design AND to get a hull that will withstand such punishment...the first incarnation failed on both this aspect and the ride it gave to the crew in rough weather..the crews evaluating it simply didn't feel safe.
She is twin water jet drive and as been said she will be called the "Shannon class"...first ever lifeboat to be called after an Irish River, and long overdew in my mind...all RNLI boats are names after rivers in the British Isles.
Her hull has now been redesigned and strengthend and is designed as a "beach launch" boat from tracter and trailer
Hope this helps.

The Baot in the video is the First experimental boat FeeSeaBeeTwo. It is at Llandudno with the new Supercat tractor for recovery Trials this week. The First of the new redesigned Shannon class boats is not due until the begining of September if I recall. The new Tractor with the first Experimental boat on it was at the Open days at Poole last weekend before going to Llandudno for the trials.
-
i stand corrected, john.............thought it looked a little like the original design, but hey ho......very impressive just the same.....
have you plans on building a plug for the new "Shannon"....if so, can i order one now please.

don't know about that, kinmel.....you get me the full GA and line plans of the Shannon , along with the plans for the supercat and between me and a certain Gribeaval [ if he's up to it] we'll have a bash........ now there's a challenge for you.

I was thinking of you two when I said few rather than no-one :-)) I know it is well beyond my capabilities.
It is an awesome piece of kit to watch in action.

I was on a short break in Llandudno this week and I saw the lifeboat being recovered and snapped it from my hotel balcony.

The FCB took to the water today with 6705russell at the helm. Running her on 12v at the moment, all seems to be working fine. She still needs to be finished off. There's a pic of Russ's 1/12 Whibty Trent Class too. Wait til I get my Severn done.... Dave. :-))

Dave, its inspirational!
So much so in fact I have decided to produce the FCB in 1/12th scale as Speedline's next major project (now the LCM3 development is finished).
If anyone has any good info I would love to hear from you!
Adrian

That is the Flying Christine lll I spy is not?

you mean that, adrian.....yes it is,
am on with the original flying christine at the mo.

Neil you have done a great job on Flying Christine - is that the presentation one or the one staying in the family
Geoff
-
OH NO, geoff..that was the original model that I made for them, and is a model of the current boat, just been re engined and now does a stonking 25 knots.
the one I'm building at the mo is their original boat dating back to 1951.
pics below of the latest boat, and the old one is below that.

I'll be looking forward to seeing that Adrian. O0 Will it be like the one on trials now? The new Shanon Class has a different hull shape but the superstructure is very similar. Keep us posted, Dave. :-)) :-))
-
It will be the one that the RNLI end up with. It wont be released until we know just what that is for certain but we have begun thinking about timing etc .
We are doing the LCM3 and LCM6 now, then DC's Bluebird K7 and the Marinefahrprahn in 1/72 scale and 1/35th scale, then the lifeboat.
(For fun i'm building a resin 1/16th scale KV1 and a 1/18 scale Bell X1 in between times).

Hi there Alan, thanks for that, I'll bet the crew were a bit nervous heading for the beach! Not sure if the FCB will be heading for the SMAS as Russ is it's guardian these days, I've just got no room for anything at the moment. {:-{

Hi all,
Dave, can you please tell me what material you used for the windows and where you got it?
Great set of pictures for anyone attempting this build a model of this boat.
Have an interest in doing so myself since my youngest son helped to crew "Effseabee Too" from Poole to Dungeness a couple of months back. Note part of the plan but en route off of Eastbourne they prevented a fishing boat from sinking before the Eastbourne lifeboat reached the scene and completed the job.

Hi there, heard about the first shout for her, a good test for her and well done all round I say. The windows are just made from 1mm styrene sheet (available most model shops) cut to shape sprayed satin black (I use Halfords acrylic aerosols), they then had sheets of mirror finish stick on sheet put on to represent the windows (from Barry's Model Lettering). They're quite effective on the water reflecting their surroundings. The windows are only tacked on with 3m double sided tape as the intention is to cut them out properly eventually. Models By Design also do the FCB2 in 1/16 scale, I've got one still unbuilt and the windows are marked out on it so I just enlarged them, paper templates first to make sure they looked right then did them in styrene. Only took couple of hours to get them all cut out. Go build one, they're good fun! Dave. :-))
-
Hi all,
Dave, thanks for the info on the mirror windows.
As you probably know "EFFSEABEE TOO" is not equiped as a lifeboat but did have a salvage pump on board luckily for the "Jack Henry".
There was so much water in the engine room they couldn't see where it was coming in. Bit of a report in the Eastbourne Lifeboat website 25/07/2011.
If I build it, it will be 1/12 scale scale but info on the hull shape is as rare as the proverbial hen's teeth. Took some photos when it was on the beach (the trailer was knackered) but never had the wit to take the measurements. But of course I did not know drawings were not readily available at the time.
Can make the photos available if anyone is interested.
Yours,
Alan C

If I build it, it will be 1/12 scale scale but info on the hull shape is as rare as the proverbial hen's teeth. Took some photos when it was on the beach (the trailer was knackered) but never had the wit to take the measurements. But of course I did not know drawings were not readily available at the time.
Can make the photos available if anyone is interested.
Yours,
Alan C
Would be interesting to see your photos, Dave .

Hi all,
Photos of "EFFSEABEE TOO" on Dungeness beach. Despite being early august it was a very dull day.
Yours,
Alan C
