Brings back memories of the last time I saw her - the last view on the video was from Wards shipbreakers at Inverkeithing and we used to watch her disappear day by day
as we travelled to work at RAF Pitreavie Castle ( I had an 18 month posting with the brillcream boys - the only time I was ever posted ashore during my time in th RN).
A friend of mine ended up with the white grand piano from the ballroom

Dear Geoff,
I only heard it on this, and liked it... but you 'knew' her... albeit in her dying days... much more important, and far more succinct.

OK, here's another one... how many such superb things can you all out there come up with... a challenge :-))
How much does maritime history count these days.... little I think really, but in the grand scheme of things in the confrontation of supreme technology, we can come up with something? Can't we??? :-)) :-)) :-))

How very odd that this should come up! At the beginning of the clip you can see c/s "Mercury" alongside the Standard Telephone and Cable wharf. I was standing next to a film crew at the time, and it was also when I took the photo of "Mercury" that I posted yonks ago in the Strange but True saga!. Thanks for the memory! BY.

Dear Bryan,
I am very pleased that my 'insert' was of such interest/use to you. Timing of such things as occurred comes as no surprise to me, since, from my Mothers' side of the Family strange occurrences in time happen so frequently that I take them for granted these days.
May I ask a favour from Mayhem members please. If someone can supply a drawing or full spec. of Mauretania's siren/whistle, I could get a replica made. For all your ref., MD Whistles (Mike - in the USA), can make any realtime siren/whistle on request. He is a true loco engineer, and very very competent.

Dear All,
On reflection, maybe not! Her siren would need probably at least a 4" feed at around 200 psi. and in the region of 200 cfm.. Too larger a compressor needed to make it work properly, let alone the sheer size of the siren - would cost too much! However, if anyone does have any data on her siren I would still like to know please.

I still remember being on board SS Manxman on her last sailing out Douglas.
The sounding of her triple bell whistle still brings a tear to my eye.
Very haunting.
Very sad

Dear Funtime,
Well, I know what your mean...
I have ordered both the below Link whistles from MD Whistles, to blow accurately between 100 psi and 200 psi., 150 to 180 cfm.. Don't want too much down pressure.
Hope the Lukenheimer 3 chime sounds similiar to the vessel? - though the steamer was probably lower base.
They are going to sound grand between the two loco's.
