Seeking advice on timing my TVR1A. My "equal exposure" visual attempts are not leading to success.
Engine runs well with the handle up. Runs rougher with the handle down and has less power (using my calibrated fingertips pressing on the flywheel :-)).
Obviously, my timing if off on one or both of my valves but which way to turn the valve shafts on which cylinder? In/down on forward and up on aft? vice versa? in on both?

I have found the description of the valve timing provided by Graham in the engine manual very useful, and had no problems adjusting my engine. Did you follow the procedure he recommends?

Hi, You seem to have followed the instructions in the book, or it wouldn't run at all. :-))
I use an eyepiece, similar to what a watchmaker would use, and even then it takes time and patience. %%
Go for the "best fit" possible. Even the book admits that some engines will run on the first notch, and some wont.
I think that a big magnifying glass would be just as good, maybe a bit clumsy to handel.(one hand for the glass, one to hold the motor, one to hold the lock nut, one to adjust the valve, one stop you falling over with frustration) :}

Thanks, I have a magnifying light, I'll get that a try (it ran better before my last "improvement").

Magnifying light worked great but .... I was chagrined to realize the set screw on the eccentric had slipped on the the aft cylinder and was causing all the trouble. Runs great once I had realigned the eccentric. Thanks for the help.
