Title: Lipo questions :)
Post by: offshore1987 on March 25, 2011, 08:39:41 pm
Hi everyone

If you charge a lipo at a higher rate dos this mean better output but for a shorter time? like on a normal cell battery pack?

Thank you

According to everything I've read, NO.

Recommended charge rates mean just that - Lipo's don't seem to take kindly to over-charging, they just go pop and potentially and get ruined.

My take on the "C" rating is it tells you how many amps you can charge with, the higher the "C" you charge with the shorter the time it takes to charge. It shouldn't have any effect on the performance of the battery.
For example a 5000mah battery charged at 1C is 5amps so if you had a 5C rating you could theoretically charge at 25amps! I'm not in a hurry I charge all my lipo's at 1C. :-)

Different cells of different chemical make up can accept charges of varying rates.

NiCd and Nimh are quite happy taking multiples of their 'C' rate as long as the peak charge voltages or temperatures are not exceeded, time to charge is reduced in relation to that charge rate.

Li-po cells are being produced that can accept higher than the 1'C' rate - but generally to be safe, 1 'C' is about it - for the present

'C' is the rated current capabiility of the cell i.e., 5000mAh = 5Ah therefore charge rate is 5 Amps
