Is it just me or have the organisers messed the rules up this year?
-
don't know.......given up watching it.........gone back to BTCC and MOTO GP....... much more exciting and interesting........... O0 O0
-
But that may be my point.
-
To whit.......BTCC is on tomorrow from 11.00 hours on channel 24....great stuff.
-
Thanks I might just tune in.
-
I shall be watching the BTCC meeting, excellent TV. :-))
3 BTCC races plus the support races, cant be bad.
-
I gave up years ago when it got boooooring. :((
Now I watch Australian V8's. Racing to the last lap 8) 8)
-
Well for me F1 is more about the technology, and most F1 fans would say the same, where as V8's, touring cars are definitely less a technology race and more a drivers race. Both make for excitement, just in different ways :-))
Its the same with Marbleheads and IOM's, tech verses sailor
Look at MW, cars technology is not up to scratch so 18th on the grid, SBs working perfectly 1st on the grid this weekend. (not going into the politics of that one >>:-()
Nick
-
If that was not an exciting race then you guys need your head read :-))
Oh Yeah!!!
First comment, care to retract that now ;)
Cheers

Best race I've seen for a long while!
( NB! Don't spoil it it for anyone - don't reveal any results until the later rerun!)
-
Yes I am eating my words somewhat. A very good race an should bring a few fan back. The rules worked will today, but they my not in Turkey. I hope they do but we'll see.
-
( NB! Don't spoil it it for anyone - don't reveal any results until the later rerun!)
Can you ask Auntie Beeb and all the other news/sports channels the same Martin? {-)
Regards Ian
-
Only saw the last 9 laps the best i have seen in along time ,if it carries on like that I may start watching again

My thoughts exactly!! Now who was the driver of the race then....?
Greg
-
On the bit I saw and some replays for me it was Webber
Ray
-
Man of the race Mark Webber, no doubt about that O0
-
Definately Mark Webber,19th to 3rd,feel sorry for Jenson though worked hard, pity tyres let him down at the end, best race for ages.
Hope the rest of the season will be good
-
Drivers of the race;
Mark Webber for driving brilliant from 18th on the grid to earn a well deserved podium finish.
Lewis Hamilton for a fantastic drive, pulling off some great overtaking manoeuvres, and for really taking the race to the Red Bulls.
-
I just managed to watch it. Thanks Freeview+.
What a race! Best I've seen in a long while. The new rules regarding use of the rear wing are a bit weird and I was rather surprised to find only one tyre manufacturer this season. But it seems to be all about tyres and how they are managed doesn't it? And only one retirement - that's a rarity - cue 'Three Wheels On My Wagon...' I spotted the wonky wheel as he left the pits.
Man of the match had to be Mark Webber, although it was good to see Rosberg up there near the top and Ferrari showing their teeth again. Wally of the week has to be Button for missing his parking space. That's going to take some living down. ;-)
-
Is it just me or have the organisers got the rules just right this year? :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :}
-
Turkey wasn't too exciting - I watched the whole race, which is a departure from me usually dozing off around lap 20. It's an age thing.
Nice to see Ferrari doing well again, they've had it lean for a while.
... and Shumacher is still an 'bottom'!
-
... and Shumacher is still an 'bottom'!
He has nothing left to prove now so there is no "Eye of the tiger" so to speak
-
Probably wasnt as eciting, for you, as the 2 POMS wern't 1-2 ;D
Heaps of overtaking, another great race, The midnight finish for me isnt so crash hot {:-{ when I have t be at work at 5 am

Just as a comment to the snide remark about Poms, ( which refers to the Australians, not the British) Apart from Ferrari and maybe one of the Lotus Teams, all the cars are built in England. Even Mercedes , both car and engine are English. Even the Renault Team is based in England, so really it hardly matters who wins, they are driving an English car....
-

The best drivers won the race. Listening to the comments made (Or not), by the most recent Brit world Champ, one wonders if he is suffering from the Coultard/Montoya/ Alonso factor that Mack generate? (Oh yes they do) and with respect, "The German" can still thread a needle at 200MPH.
Regards Ian.
-
as much as i like mr's brundle and coulthard, i find it strange that the commentators can rave about how exciting the racing has been this year when the only real action is in the mid field. podium places are pretty well a forgone conclusion. bring back refuelling stops and one engine supplier along the lines of the former A1GP series. now that was good racing. it was pretty rare for a team to win 2x or more in a row there.
-
bring back refuelling stops
Yes, it got really exciting watching the pit crews trying to fry themselves and the drivers O0
regards Ian.

LOL true about the cars,
In Australia a POM is an Englishman even if they are 2nd Generation born here, If ya got the accent your a POM :D
and its not seen as offensive ;)

-
The term pommy, often shortened to pom or pomme, in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, commonly denotes a person of British (usually of English heritage) origin. A derogatory term, it was controversially ruled no longer offensive in 2006 by the Australian Advertising Standards Board and in 2010 by the New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority. :}
-
i used to love my oz mates calling me a whinging pommie bar steward........i knew i'd made the grade..................nothing derogatory about it....saw it as a term of affection. {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

Anyway, back to the subject. The rules may have shaken things up a bit, but the same old faces are still winning. Will Seb and Mark be caught by anyone this year?
-
Same old faces winning, even when Schumi and Ferrari were on top,
It's for the other teams to catch up, not for Bernie to fiddle with the rules
to make it "more exiting".
He seems to change the rules for the start of every season.
I must admit that so far this season the races have been more exiting,
is that because of or in spite of the changes ?
My personal opinion is that fuel stops and tyre changes made the racing
more exiting, not in a ghoulish way like just watching and waiting for an accident
but in getting the whole team involved in the race.
-
I completely agree that the fuel and tyre pitstops were part of the racing, the way the teams managed them added an extra dimension to the race. I would like to see them come back next year but for now we have to put up with the current rules. The question still stands. Can anyone catch them redbulls?
-
Its the pits stops that rule the racing, get a tyre that will last the whole race, get rid of all the hig-tech crap, then we will have proper racing again, like they did 40 -50 years ago. untill then i would rather watch paint dry.
But being a bike nut out of nappies i would say that! %%
-
I've only watched the one race so far this year, but the rule changes do seem to have put some excitement back in, even if you do need an on-board Philadelphia lawyer to tell you when you are allowed to use the extra toys. At the end of the day, its always going to be the teams with the best combination of engineering and organisation who win, whatever the rules.
The excuse for racing is that it is supposed to improve the breed - I'm uncertain as to the value of flaps in real life. I am even less certain of the real life value of tyres that last 40 miles. The rules that limit the number of engines per car per season will no doubt eventually give use road users tougher, more long lived engines, and the forthcoming rules about 1.6 litres and four cylinders and a back-up battery I can see forcing improvements into real cars sooner rather than later.
-
Yeah. I always thought F1 was about bringing in new technology to improve the racing which would also filter down to road cars. At the moment the rules seem to be stifling the advancements that would come about if the teams were able to do what they wanted with their cars. I understand the need to make F1 more exciting to bring in more fans but I think you ether like F1 or you don't. I will probably always like it but playing with the rules can turn some fans off.
-
drop the entry price to the track would be a good way to attract fans. you would nee to remortgage your house to go to the whole event.
-
£131 to get in to Silverstone on race day? Hmmm, I think I'll watch it on telly.
-
Quite right hopeitfloats,wartsilaone,
yet we used to have 2 GPs in the UK and they used to be sellouts.
Silverstone is not ultra modern or fan friendly,
have you seen the queues from the M1 on race weekends ?
But you could still sell the tickets twice over.
Bernie takes the races to where the money and less strict advertising are.
The ordinary fan is low down on Bernie's priorities,
If he can fill the executive suites and grandstands with all the rich and famous I think he's happy.
-
well that was one of the more interesting monaco races for a year or two. pity the teams are allowed to work on their cars during the time the race was stopped though. it would have been interesting to see if button/alonso could have passed vettel in the closing laps. bit of a let down really.
-
I don't watch any more.... I'm tired with Kers, the tire nonsense, the electronics with it's £30,000 steering wheels and all the looney "trick" aerodynamics...
Just because all of these thing are possible... %%

All that CO2 pumped into the atomsphere, all motor racing should be banned, bring on the solar powered Desert racing :-)) %%

Great idea, but may I ask how are the competitors, teams and spectators going to get to the desert ? %)

..And here was me thinking that £65 for entry to the Italian GP at Monza inc 2 days camping for 2 adults was expensive,..mind you, that was in 2000
-

In their solar powered cars, land yachts, or just their sandels %% 8)

In their Solar Powered cars at night, should be an exciting race!

Candle power? Luminous paint on the track and mount the solar calls underneath for night running?

at least we have not got the problems FIFA has regarding corruption
-
at least we have not got the problems FIFA has regarding corruption
Bernie Ecclestone and his partners own F1,
FIFA is not a private company, Sepp Blatter is an elected president and just like politicians, when elected look after
the people that voted them in.
Depends which side of the fence your on.
One side says corruption, the other says just protecting the people that voted for me.
In both cases you could say Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
-
Heard an interesting statistic on the sustainability aspect, more CO2 is produced from the support vehicles of the Tour de France than in all the F1 races :}
Great season this year so far.
At least no Nascar supporters have piped up yet, talk about boring ;D
Cheers

I think it's the tyres that's making the biggest difference this year. The DRS hasn't made much impact yet but it might come good in Montreal when the drivers get to use it twice. Personally I think they should be able to use it when they like but that's just me.
Ali.
-
Is the DRS an automatic reset system depending on track position?
-
The DRS can only be used if your car is a second or less behind another car when on a certain part of the track, usually just before the start/finish strait. Once you put brakes on at the end of the strait the flap goes back down and you will have to wait until the end of the next lap.
-
DRS???
-
DRS???
Drag Reduction System
-
A flap on the rear wing (Spoiler) open's = less down force & less drag ok2
-
Its a mechanical version of the "f duct".
Nick
-
Well another exiting race despite the yellow flag start and the massive red flag interval, Was a 2am start for me, glad the Queen decided to have her birthday holiday today ;D I would have been 2 1/2 hours late to work otherwise. ended up going back to bed till 10:30 Am :embarrassed:
Congratulations to the Winner an amazing drive from last to first after the last safety car, beats Marks drive in China but there was hardly any footage of his overtaking moves :((
Cheers

Great race in Canada,
Can we have more wet races ?
it certainly adds to the excitement.
What was Lewis Hamilton trying to do,
he seems to have his kamikaze head on this season.
What a drive from Button, when he came back on track in 21st place
I said that he will be lucky to get a point.
Shows how much that I've learned watching F1 for 40 years. %%
Vettel must be as sick as the proverbial parrot, leading from 1st lap to last
and making one mistake that cost him the victory.
He will still take some catching for the title but I hope some one can mount a serious challenge.
So lets hope that the next few races in Europe are as exiting as Montreal. :-))
-
One does tend to forget that Buttton is quite a useful driver on his day. All too often he seems to lose interest about 1/4 the way into the race, and only wake up again in the last quarter. Mind you, it does tend to help things along if he doesn't see two main rivals and successfully punts them off... but hey, that's racing. Anyway, all credit to him.
-
Agreed, another great race and even the rain intermission commentary was entertaining, Martin Brundle & David Coulthard
earned their money yesterday! Only disappointment for me was Schumacher not getting on the podium..... must have done
his ego a power of good though, coming in 4th!
-
Martin,
Yesterday was the one and only time the words
Come on Schumi have passed my lips.
Yesterday showed that he still has the will to win.
Long may it continue.
Every sport needs characters like Schumi now and then
to raise the pack to another level. :-))

Years ago I used to watch the F1, I've even been to Silverstone to watch the GB grand Prix (21st b-day pressie) then it started to become a one horse race year after year, i'm sure many noticed that it started to become the cars winning the races not the driver, I'm sure many of the rules, regulations, computers etc had something to do with it.
Gone are the days of Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna to name a few who really kindled my spirit of F1.
Although over the past 2 years or so it looks as if its coming back to being a ''drivers race'' which i must say I'm more impressed with the level of racing rather then it being a ''technical exercise'' or ''show of technology''
Although I find, its still more about the cars then the driver ( don't get me wrong driving those things do require a great amount of skill, something many of us could never do)
I do think that its no longer a considered racing, for years now I have been more impressed with the Motor GP, and Touring cars, to me those are races, only modified cars/bikes (heavily mind you) but there still cars or bikes to which the 'common man' drives, which is how it used to be when racing first started out all those years ago.
Dose anyone else find that or just me?
-
It wasn't just the one corner that Vettel ran a bit wide on. Two corners before his "off" he dunched the wall a bit...and that must have given Button a bit of mental impetus.
There's always been a slight question mark about Vettels behaviour when under pressure and his perceived dislike of overtaking for a place. For my money, Mark Webber is the better "racing driver". Hamilton? Well Hamilton is Hamilton and I for one certainly wouldn't write him off yet. If nothing else he both adds a bit of excitement and makes other drivers (mainly the very fast "plodders") a bit leary of him. Just like the Shoemaker used to do. Button? Smooth and "quiet" and much under-rated by many.....as was proved yesterday. BY.
-
I have always enjoyed the technology side of F1, but, like many, became a little bored with watching the actual racing over the past decade. This year i think the new rules have managed to get the interest back into the racing & the sport is much better for it.There seems to have been more overtaking this year than in the last 10 seasons all rolled into 1.
Only saw the highlight of the last race, but it was a good 1, because i spent the weekend at Silverstone watching proper racing (moto GP).
cheers Glenn

Apart from all the F1 Ballyhoo, on sunday, at Silverstone it was MotoGP day. There , in pouring rain and with a totally waterlogged track, these brave young men put on a show for the spectators and the TV. No delays, just pure racing! Also a young Englishman, named Bradley Smith, started from 28th place on the Grid, overtook more competitors than happens in a complete Season of F1, and finally finished 2nd, big Headlines in the Press, photos and Interviews on Radio and Newspapers? None of it, these are the real Racers, one of them, Colin Edwards, crashed last weekend and broke his collarbone, it now has a Plate in it. He started this week and finished 3rd,real men Racing awesome machines....
