Title: Transatlantic Cable laying
Post by: Martin (Admin) on April 27, 2011, 06:38:37 pm

Anyone know anything about Transatlantic Cable laying? I've been in correspondence with someone interested in recreating the ventures in model form!

A friend of a friend is already involved but this may be of interest or even a project that a Mayhemer or clue may wish to get involved with....

..... In fact we're so delighted we're wondering if it's possible to take this another stage further. (just say if I'm taking things too far). Prior to the successful cable laying by the Great Eastern, in 1858 there was another attempt to lay the cable - carried out by two boats - the UK Agamenmon and the US Niagara. These much smaller boats met in the middle of the Atlantic, and then laid half the cable each.

We're wondering if you might know of some other people who could be interested in helping us recreate this in miniature? The boats don't need to be exact replicas of the Agamenmon and Niagara, but they would need to be about the same size by comparison with Bob's Great Eastern.

Just to add to Martin's post above, the scale of the Great Eastern is 1:100 giving a model just over 2 metres in length.

Bryan Young served on cable layers - in fact I think he was on the Great Eastern.  %)
