Title: HMS Protector - Replacement for HMS Endurance
Post by: pugwash on June 01, 2011, 11:03:12 pm
We now have a temporary replacement for HMS Endurance.  An icebreaker the Polar Bear has been
chartered for 3 years and will be re-named HMS Protector.  This is to give the Mod time to make a
decision on Endurances' future.  Just how long do they need they have had a couple of years
already.  The flight deck on Polar Bear hs been movedf from over the front of the bridge to
the stern but she has no hanger faciilities and is half the size of Endurance, though is other
respects she is ideal for the job.
Bet they have to charter her for another 3 yrs just to give time for a Final Decision.

Thanks mother England for the LHD you sold to Oz.  Must be like a garage sale for the RN at the moment.

The last Endurance (Polar Circle) was chartered first before purchase, makes sense to me to see whether it fits the bill. The lack of a hangar is a big scaling down of capability. Endurance carried two Lynx and these were used extensivley. No helo would stay operational very long parked on that deck especially with the weather an exposed helo would experience. Better than nothing I suppose but not very good 5 out of 10.
