I first posted in the beginners section and had an excellent welcome, so i though i better post in a more appropriate section for my build thread.
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.UK/forum/index.php?topic=30704.0
I have now ruffly fitted the RC gear into the boat and had a couple of test runs, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow04f5AMoZU
but one of the couplings broke yesterday and I noticed last night that the other coupling has a little damage, there is now a bit of play in the center of the universal coupling, does anyone have a stronger alternative than the red plastic ones? I know metal ones exist but have yet to find a supplier.
I am running on 2 12v 8ah motorbike batteries with xyh4250-800kv-outrunners and seaking 60A speed controllers.
The speed controllers are a pain in the backside as i have had to program every time i use them! also the reverse is a nightmare to get on my left motor due to the controller setup.
I will post some pics of its first decent 10min run.

hi, try modelboatbits they are on ebay or direct to www. modelboatbits hope this helps

Looking good, have a look at these couplings, may be of some use to you, Dave. :-))

For this kind of torque you really need either solid couplings or the heavy duty flexible from Mobile Marine Models....
Russ
-
Forgot about the Mobile Marine ones, here's a link to them too, Dave. :-)

Thanks guys, which size do you think i require from
http://www.mobilemarinemodels.com/acatalog/Safety_Couplings.html
I am guessing standard....
I found a spare coupling from another model, so going for another run tonight, will get the mrs to get a few decent snaps.
Kind Regards,
Chris

I've used the heavy duty flexible couplings from MMM in my 10th scale Trent very good handles the torque
Paul
-
Thanks for the input Paul,
Does anyone have any internal pics of there Aruns/Severn/Trent, my internals are just botched together at the moment and i want to make it tidy and properly before i start with fittings etc...
I currently place 1 battery between the prop shafts and 1 just forward of the center of the boat, can anyone suggest a decent mount point?
-
This is how I've done my 1/12 Tamar. The batteries are in trays at the sides to help slow down "roll" of the hull when sailing and it means they can be slid fore and aft for trim. I've used rc helicopter velcro tape to hold them down.
There is a servo cutout (but no servo yet) above the stbd. motor which will be used for the transom door opening. The one above the port motor is for the rudders.
There is a separate battery at the front for the bow thruster.

Thanks Chris,
What batteries are you using as i am currently on Motorbike batteries that weigh quite a bit, is that not going to be too much weight in the center? Or is that the best way to balance the boat, in my trials the roll is quite good at the moment, any chance of a pic of your setup?
Cheers,
Chris
-
I am using a pair of Graupner 12V 7aH batteries, one for each motor, Graupner Speed 900s. They are quite heavy, but the boat is still nowhere near it's waterline yet. All electrics were from A Model World. I'm not after speed, so I have tried to keep it basic and simple.
I had read that by spreading the weight laterally, ie sideways, in the boat, there is less tendency for the boat to bob about in the water.....now there's a can of worms!

Hi Chris
a couple of pics of my Trent set up the motors are 50 55 brushless outrunners , speed controllers are Turigy 180amp with reverse and I am using 4 cell 6ah lipo's
one for each motor . Also I am using a 3 cell 2.2ah lipo for receiver and for running the sound system and cooling water pump a 12v 3.3ah gell cell
Paul
-
What sort of run times do you get Chris/Paul?
-
I have only done trial runs so far, but had half an hour non stop pottering around a lake so far with the Graupners.
Chris
-
Hi Chris
I get about 20 mins running at scale speed which is'nt to bad considering the boat weighs 56lbs
Paul
-
my boat is now around 30kg as i have 2 sets of batteries, on the plus side i am now getting a good 30 min fast running and i wreckon an hour pottering about with a few quick runs. :}
I think its time to start the detailing!
Step 1 stanchions i think..
-
Good morning,
Build update....Textured deck was done last night, BnQ do textured spray paint for ornaments (and now lifeboats ;) looks brilliant, I am made up with the finish so far, I will give the deck another 'grey' spray tonight then I am ready to start gluing on all my bollards etc, no sign of stancions though! I have contacted adrian from Speedline and he can provide them at £2.50 each and there are about 30! 35 if count the back and sides! Ouch on the wallet, think that will be for next pay day!
Got myself a dremel 300 also so let the cutting and sanding begin!
Running update, I have had the boat running for about 1.5 hours, just pottering with the club at the 3 sisters. Very pleased with run times.
-
model slipway do 1/12 stantions at 40p each. have a look at there web site at lifeboat fittings. not used em meself but look ok and a cheaper option.
-
speedline do nice brass stanchions. i got some for the trent.
-
I am struggling to find a model slipway website? Are they still available?

-
Good finish.
What did you use for the red and yellow hull stripes?
Chris
-
That would be trimline purchased from Cornwall modelboats, for ref 2.4 meters is not long enough to cover the entire area so for the gap i had 2 use 2 different sizes of trim.
Just been sailing and after 2h or so lost my rudder servo, just died!
-
I have just received my stanchions from Modelslipway, I must say I am a little disapointed, they look tiny....I think they might be 2cm shorter than what is on my plans, i could cut off the base plate and put a brass sleeve on them to extend...
Any ideas anyone or just go for it and stick them on?
I will try and get a pic of the size next to the boat and plans...
-
I assume that when you sent the order you specified that you wanted the 1/12th scale ones as they also do 1/16th scale ones.
Mike
-
Yes I did, I will send them an email to get the sizes...
-
Just another progress report...

Nice boat well built but just one suggestion raise the receiver as high as you can it looks to be below or near the waterline and I think am I right it is 2.4gh so you may have problems with loss of signal
peter

Peter,
Thank you for the tip, you are right, it is. I didn't know it would be a problem.
It will be moved for the next photo shoot and trial sail! That's why I love this forum.
kind regards

Build update:
After visiting the model boat convention on Sat I returned with some water pickups and tubing, these are now fitted but the water only tricles out the exit holes on the back of the boat, this was on a trial test in the pond so might get a bit more flow on the lake? Any thoughts anyone? Or could it be that they not close enough to the prop?
I also picked up a bargin from the component shop stall, 2 * 12v9a lead acid for £22!
Got a flashing LED for the super structure, just need to encorporate this into my nav lights purchased from Cornwall models, and my botched radar/ old servo....
Pics to follow.

peter
Your 2.4 receiver will be fine low down, you will not have any problems with loss of signal, all mine are low in the hull with no problems, the only thing to think of is if you get any water in the hull.]

Something to note the wires from my brushless motors that connect to the ESC were VERY VERY HOT when i did the test run in the pond, any suggestions why they were so hot? And is there anything that can be done to cool them? My dad wreckons they were smoking they were that hot?
Bit worried?
I was testing having the ESC's water cooled aswell!
-
They have to be carrying too much current for the size of cable.
Either rewire with heavier cable or change the set up to reduce the power consumption.

Hi mate,
Any updates??
-
Sorry, been busy with work of late, not had time for the boat as it resides in the dry dock at dad's garage...no space for the "xxxxx" at my house, and the 2 year old runnning round will make short work of my stanchions!
Will post some more pics asap...
-
Hi
A nice build, yes the grab rails look good in white , what did you construct them out of,
Regards Gerard.
-
The grab rails are thin brass rod, pain in the backside to bend correctly!
