Title: RC Heli's - Have you got one of these?
Post by: Andy M on March 04, 2007, 02:03:40 pm
Hi, just wondered if anyone has one of these? It is an Airfox RC helicopter, and was good fun till it stopped working! The top rotor has stopped working, which I thought might be to do with the motor for it being run in the 'wrong' direction,my brother in law has one that did the same thing. Do you have one,did it stop working and was it the top rotor? I would be interested to find out if this is just an isolated case or is it a design fault. I have written to the P.O. box number on the box it came in but I dont hold out much hope for a reply or a replacement. I will probably try to get replacement motors from another source if I dont hear anything from the supplier.I will measure the motors and check on the forum to see where I can get them.  Grounded. Here is my little indoor heli, similar type of thing to yours.
mine is vertually indestructable ive crashed it into nearly everything in the living room and yet it still flys.

could a wire have come off the motor this has happened to my BIGGER heli .

I opened it up and the motor brushes have burned out, yours looks like it is a better version than my one. Mine was £30, how much was yours?Andy M.

i paid £50 for it from peterpan enterprises.com
flies well but you only get around 15 minutes flight time from the Li-Po battery.

>flies well but you only get around 15 minutes flight time from the Li-Po battery

Probably a good job - or you'd have no living room left ;D

I saw one in Maplins last week but its not on their website.  I think it was about £30?
Can you actually get them to go where you want (ie. NOT requiring the skill level of a proper one) ;)

If I didn't spend so much time on here, I might be tempted ;D

I must say that they are easy to keep in the air, but to get it to do what you are wanting is a bit more difficult! I only got about an hour of practice before it stopped working. Still, the whole thing was cheaper than a set of blades and a mainshaft for my Morley Jetranger when I was dabbling with helis. Boats seem to last longer than Planes and Helis, wonder why that is! Looks like I'll be sticking to boats then, Andy (mind you, I can't get them to go where I want half the time)

Danny

PS Jay- Sorry for calling you Ian - I'm having a "bad brain" day.

just to show some size difference between my Walkera 22e-z and my mini heli.

my large one had 30 seconds flight time before being smashed to pieces and thats the way its stayed, still i much prefer the little indoor heli.

andy i had the same one and the same problem, and it was the motor that had burnt out. couldnt get to the bottom of who actually made it so i gave up and its now in pieces in my "bits" box!  i found that if i bent the blades on the tail rotor to give more lift, it was much more menouverable. im just waiting now til the technology is a wee bit better and i can put a working heli on my type45!! that will be cool!!!

Funny it is identical to the one that Maplins now sell will dig out the instructions for it

I actually got 2 tail rotors with mine, one with a ring round it and a larger, higher pitched one with no ring, which made a bit of difference to its fore/aft response. I only got about 15 minutes to try it before the motor burned out! The 'brushes' are about 1mm wide with 2 slots in the copper strip making 3 brushes about the width of a hair, which had curled back with the heat generated,I straightened them and reassembled motor,(sounds easy) it ran for about 30 seconds! The repair took 1/2 hour with tweezers and a magnifying glass! I would like to get it going again but dont want to spend too much more on it,I really should be saving up for the bits I need for my Evinrude 9.9 outboard. I will try and measure my motors tomorrow to see if anyone knows of an alternative motor I could use. The ones that are fitted have had the part number ground off to solder the capacitor to the casing,so that makes identification a bit more difficult. I tried motors from an airship I had( I cant resist RC gadgets!) but although they are almost the same, they dont rev high enough to lift it off the ground! I even tried chanting 'fly you B******' but that didnt work either! Andy M.

Nice selection, I ended up buying 2 more helis, a walkera 5#8 and a walkera 5#6 (tiny 4 channel with a nice 3/4 size transmitter) I have had loads of flights (and a few crashes!) I did manage to save up for the bits I needed for my  24 year old Evinrude 9.9 outboard and it runs perfectly. It is fitted to my Viper mini speedboat( mentioned elsewhere on this forum) and never missed a beat on the occasions I have been out in it. I am now saving up for steel to construct a trailer for it as I had to borrow my friend's bike trailer to transport it. I still like all my radio controlled stuff but I am trying to slim down my collection a bit (see 'over 20 models for sale' in sales section) I have sold a few models, but there are plenty more left if you are interested. I bet the chinook is a pig to fly!
Bad enough with a single rotor!

Like the look though

I did quite a bit of research when I was looking for an indoor heli - the general opinion was that the motors are not expected to last too long unless you replace it with a brushless - bit expensive but supposed to be worth it - and before anyone asks - no I didn't finally get a heli but it's still on my wish list - probably after my next submarine.m (or of course a good lottery win)

Cheers all,

From info I have been told by the flying guys at the local modelshop it is an excellant model and is alot better
than the other single rotored heli's. I think it was the stability from the 2 rotors.
now where is that carrier? {-)

Hi everyone,I liked the Walkera 5#6 but I have flown it so much that I have worn out one of the motors, my friend got one at the same time but he hasnt flown his as much as I did. I found that it tended to fall into its own rotor wash if turned too fast when moving forward, resulting in 'plumetting', being small,it nearly always survived undamaged. I prefer the accuracy of control that the bigger 5#8 provides, mine is still flying well. My friend got one of these as well. We ordered them direct from china, and even with import duty( which Customs and Excise billed us for a week later) it was still cheaper than ordering it from anywhere in Europe. We got a deal which included an extra 1000 mah pack (14 minutes flight time) a jetranger bodyshell,a Ka 50 gunship bodyshell ,spare blades and a simulator cable and disc. The 5#8 is a 5#4 with metal upgrade parts. It was listed on ebay as a Walkera dragonfly 5v8 and was from RC Machine. I still like the 5#6 but it is a lot more difficult to fly accurately,we had competitions to fly from one coffee jar lid to another. Harder than it sounds! We ditched the standard canopy with it's poor stickers and made our own from blue foam, painted with enamel, looks much better. I am thinking of putting the radio gear into a small plane(if I can unplug the micro sockets from the reciever without ripping the wires out!) I may even send away for a new motor but finances are tight and I like experimenting anyway. Andy M

Yes, I got one of the Airfox ones for Xmas - it lasted less than an hour since the top rotor hub broke in a furniture-related incident.

I now see that the web site offeres spare rotors for a fiver - must be worth a try.

While it was operating we discovered that the tail rotor rotated both directions, but seemed to make NO difference to the flightpath - if it flies again I will try increasing the pitch of the tail rotor.  I have already tried all the small propblades I have from aero-aces - nothing works.

If I had not seen this post, and found the now-working website the heli was going to get MODIFIED into a paddle steamer, cos the blade mixing is just what is needed for independant paddle control.

I have peeked inside - the motors are (what I call) Mabuchi 180s  - as used in Tamtech cars  - these are easily available as replacements altho they probably exist in many different winds.  FWIW Proops sell them for £1.00 and Derek Knight (Knight and Pridham) uses them in his EDF unit - in a very high current winding and the KP02 - I see they are £3.75 as a motor only.

Ghost the Blade CX2 is one of the best indoor (outdoor on a calm day) heli's you can buy, its the only one in this bracket that has a spektrum tx and rx, but not an rx as we know it, it has a gyro built in. It will fly hands off when set up correctly. I have a number of helicopters, THe esky lama v3 (imo looks far better than the v4) is also a beauty to fly, cheaper than the blade, but virtually all the same parts.
Word of warning, unless you are familiar with these dont buy 2nd hand. There is a good shop up the road from you who specialise in electric rc helicopters, cant remember the name, but if you pm me I will give you the phone number.

Where do you sail in the s-o-t area? You never answer this question!!! I have asked before!!
