Title: A dive-in anyone?
Post by: g4yvm on July 06, 2011, 12:07:43 pm
Here in Salisbury my kids school has a lovely open air pool which will go unused for the summer months.  If I could blag the head into letting us use it for a dive-in, who would be interested in coming over?

I could try for a weekend or evening session.

That sounds good. If you can get a size of the pool, that helps us decide what models it's best suited for.

I'll get the size as soon as I can, but its a decent pool.  If memory serves its about the same as St Albans (but then I once thought a gate was wider than my car).

Ive just emailed the head for permission so we'll see how it goes.

If you can see it on google earth you could use their map tools to get a rough size

That is bringing back memories, I learnt to drive a car in that area and took my test at the centre on Manor road?? (I think?)  It was a long time ago and I have had beer since then... I also trained at Salisbury college during my apprenticeship, all the class rooms were on the top floor apart from the workshop. God I hated those stairs!!!!!!

Okay found it. The pool is 80ftx25ft according to the measuring tape on Google maps (disturbingly accurate in my experience). For anyone that has been to the steam show at Merstham, that pool is about the same size. It's more than large enough for small to medium size craft, but owners of larger boats may find their sailing is slightly restricted, as the width is a little on the narrow side.

For comparison. The pool at St Albans is 100ftx60ft.

Nice part of the country, and I bet the pubs round there serve a drop of 'Fortyniner'.

Well I spoke to the head and the bursar today and they both said "well, yes!  What a fascinating use of the pool!"

It looks like we have us a dive-in, even though the pool is not the biggest.   Im getting dates from the school next week: they have other users and dont want a conflict.

I'll post the dates as soon as I have them, but in principle, we can have at least one dive-in this holiday, possibly a semi-regular event if we want it.

Hope to be there with a small fleet of Sub-Sonics :-))

Maybe by this time the Type 7 will be sailing too...

They are great fun (an 'underwater Club 500')  and can leap quite well, although the standard one won't completely leave the water, most of it will be "airborne"!!!  :-)) :-)) The brushless powered one will "fly" no problems.....

Looking forward to it already!!!

Salisbury is not too far for me.  Any chance to see subs in action  O0
Hopefully on a Sunday or Wednesday, my days off work.
PS:  Liked to Google view of the pool, exactly as I how I found the St Albans pool.  Where would we be without internet, TomTom, Streetview etc.  (tee hee!)

Good luck with the event! (A bit too far away for me.)
And very nice to see school swimming pools being used but remember "No swimmers."

More progress.  I have furnished the school with several weekend dates and have asked for either a Sat or  a Sun.  I have also asked for some internal dry space for rigging etc.

I have suggested that the first event is during the summer hols but, in exchange for further events, we have the pool during term time (it is a boarding school) and that maybe the boarders could come along and see what's going on.  There'll be Housemasters too so we should expect some "can I have a drive mister?" from adults too!

Anyway, we will see what happens!

Nice one!

I recommend sorting a date sorted sharpish bearing in mind August is only around the corner. I also recommend making up a flyer- I use free software called photofiltre for all the Dive-in flyers, which has the best bits of photoshop, minus the bloat and the 'professional' price tag. http://photofiltre.free.fr/frames_en.htm

Okay, it looks like 10 - 4 on Sunday 28th August.  STill TBC but thats looking good.

The bad news,,,it is likely that there'll be no dry rigging area s they are knocking it down.  Im working on it, but I cant promise.

That's a shame, if it is that weekend we won't be able to make it, that's the same weekend as the Model Boat Convention show at Haydock  <:( <:( <:( <:(

Mark, if the clash is a serious stopper for many people I can change the date to suit.  I could just go ahead with the 28th (I have my roster for that date so I know I can make it) and add a second date for later.  I really want to see your latest missile!
