Found a pile of photos of tugs mainly military ones.
(http://s1.postimage.org/2bm98dmx0/Scan0006.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/2bm98dmx0/)
First one is the Whitburn of 1943, this pic is I presume after the war in civvy ownership. Interesting because I believe a few where shipped over here during the war, the RN had some small ones referred to as the Taniac class.

This one is the Taunda, which nationality it is I do not know, but I think it is interesting as she is a tractor tug and clearly shows the layout of a working tug such as wires etc, the bow winch I should think is used when she is secured alongside for a tow job.

For those that like them a fairly modern USN tug.

Hello
two time the same pic and no tractor tug ... :embarrassed: thanks for the pic :-))

Hi Gents,
The Whitburn was one of four tugs working on the river Wear at Sunderland, the other three was, Ryhope, Grangtown, Cornhill, named after parts of Sunderland, as said all ex-us navy you could at one time get a 1:48 kit of the Ryhope but think thay are hard to find now.
regards howard.

The USN tug is a YTB, also used by the Army Corps of Engineers.

As per the TANAC class, they were sixty-foot tugs made in various locations around Canada for the war effort. A number were built in Owen Sound by Russell Brothers. http://stevebriggs.netfirms.com/osmrm/xtanacv206.html (http://stevebriggs.netfirms.com/osmrm/xtanacv206.html)
There were four main tug classes used by the RCN during the war years: the 45 foot Ville Class (http://stevebriggs.netfirms.com/osmrm/xtanacv206.html), the 60 foot Tanac, the 80 foot Glen (http://stevebriggs.netfirms.com/osmrm/xgeorgencarelton.html) and the 105 foot Ton (http://www.shipmodelco-op.com/images/clift1.jpg). The 'Peninsula' i modeled is an ex-Ton class.

Thanks for the info, she does have clean lines about her, have several more military tugs of mainly french origin. I must say the French seem to consistently build nice looking vessels, even during the Napoleonic wars the French vessels where better designed.
-
Talking about USN tugs, there where some mothballed at Hythe below Southampton, they where kept in sheds on slips. They where part of the American quick response group for use in Europe in times of Hostiles. I remember once when they were put afloat and run up, the Americans thought they would cruise round into Portsmouth, they where severely admonish for arriving without notice and political clearance as they where classed as foreign warships, but they where interesting to look at as they were obviously war time built.

Hi great to see pics of tug Whitburn remember seeing them on the wear as an apprentice both on the Tyne and wear sadly all gone now.
