Might i suggest a vist to your nearest model steam railway club? Im sure that you will be able to glean a few ideas and learn more about coal firing. One problem with using coal is that you cannot attend the fire once the boat is sailing. Which is why gas is a popular fuel. Been done more in the past .Enjoy steaming.John.

The KN Harris model boilers and boilermaking book has a design for a vertical boiler with a firing shute from the top. Otherwise it is a question of layout to give you adequate access for firing. Bit of a problem reaching down if the water in your lake is as low as ours at the moment. I think a boat boiler would be about the same size as the LBSC Titch loco which is said to be a bit difficult to fire.
