Good Morning all respected Friends and Colleagues..last day, i was spending my evening with some seniors, including my Director Sir, for a test trial of our boat models, for a model boat race. it was part of our model boat club formation. so, we choose three identical crafts, all made by me, in same pattern, and weight of each craft was balanced with led weights. we choose the fresh water canal, part of the prawn farm, and placed two bouys within the length of 40 meters. the instructed plan was an "8" pattern, in to 6 laps. then from some dramatic incident i came to know about the importance of brushed motor, in ship and boat modeling..so i recognized the importance of brushed motor, for its less current consumption and comparitively coolest operation..yes, so the importance of the ESC for the Brushed motors..
all we know simple methods to make an ESC for brushed motors..but make this one, with BEC of 5 Volts, 3 Amps, its usable capacity is 30 Amps, ( but can pump up to 60 Amps in need), without heating it up, works from 5 volts to 18 volts DC..
can feed it with from simple toy motor, Cr 120, RS 370, 380, and yes massive CR 800 or more..and proved for hours of operation..as it works within the feasible range of current it heats up a little..i used here, all modern generation MOSFETs to reduce the total size and weight of the ESC. and driven by a simple IC, and not with a servo, to alter the speed.

one of the reliable source of a good motor gear combination is from the center locking actuator of a car.the motor will be heavily brushed, drops a little current, even at full throttle, runs fast with torque. we can buy these actuator as itself, but i collect it all from junkyards and scraps. with a 50 Rs/- we can get more than 6 or 7 motors as assy. so we can open the casing, and can take out the motors. its too reliable one..
-
whenever we consider about an ESC that we made ourselves, we feel inferior..NO..with new generation devices, we can make tiny but effective electronic devices to our needs..with this configuration, we can run a three volt high Ampere motor, with a supply of 6 volts, and spans up to 12 Volts 20,000 RPM motors with 15 to 20 amps and more...
-
can feed any motors in any ampere rating...
-
now time to make the ESC...we were making ESCs for brushed motors with a servo to drive its potentiometers. but it will be cumbersome and heavy..so, by using a single IC, to drive the ESC power device we can eliminate the servo. and total weight of this proved stuff is 18 grams. and sizes spans to a standard servo.
specs: can operate from 6 volts to 18 Volts DC.
BEC voltage 5 Volts 3 Amps.
rated capacity 30 Amps at 18 Volts.
Can burst up to 60 amps, but heats up.
Weight : 18 grams.
One of the cause of heating up the ESC is over loading. so i chooses a new generation power device, is capable to handle 70 amps at 18 volts. so, within a 20 amps drop the heat is too low, that is negligible. we can use any high power MOSFETs, and IGBTs for our need. i used industrial MOSFETs, and thanking to my friend, who sells industrial power devices.
now time to make one..we can purchase, the heat zink, according to our needs, or can scrap from any old scraped PCBs, like mother board, or a board of a TV.
-
for even more heavy use, and unwilling to cool it with water, can choose this type of heat zink, and can add a tiny CPU fan over it..cool..
-
now..collect all needed devices..two power devices, one to drive motor, and one for BEC, of 5 volts 3 amps..and the IC is for converting the pulse from receiver to device..
solder it in a way, that the print facing up, to get a high amp rated circuit. and can add brass rods in power lines.solder it all in a way, to reduce size and weight..
-
pack it all in black insulation tape, or can shield with heat shrinking tube.
it also makes it water tight.
-
showing the size comparison...
and time to check...

time to check..see the cool video here....

all respected Friends, please do not throw away your faithful brushed ones..make this one ESC and run yoyr crafts...its all worth..inexpensive..i took about 40 minutes to make this one..and spend nothing than that to buy an Omelet with a coffee...
after thourough checking, make a label of yourselves, and print it out..fix it...proud..? yes...sheer satisfying..and save loads of money...if a short circuit happens, only damage will be the loss of power device..is cost less than 18/Rs for one..
and one of the good thing of this used device is its cut off threshold..with an addition of a simple zener diode, we can set its cut off threshold from, 5 volts to 10.5 volts, so can save battery from over draining...if anyone need this one..make one and enjoy your crafts...
i will post a 60 Amps ESC, with reverse, when i get time. and yes a simple water cooled one with 120 amp capacity... :-))
-
Friends..sorry for the repeated postings..my connections still a head ache..apologize...

.....
Interesting, and I'm very tempted... but I would need a circuit diagram and a component list before I could make this...

Yes sure Friend..i will add all circuit and component list here, and thinking for an even easy way to make one..is far easy, that you need not to use any complicated circuits but only a MOSFET, to drive the motor and a BJT, to get BEC (battery eliminator circuit).
adding some more proven project here as all tested in gruesome situation, without any mercy, all with my students..and it competition proved...
is a simple ESC rated at 20 amps, and can pump up to 25 or 30 as the MOSFET is far capable of that level...and is simple and weightless...
first one is a simple ESC, is rated at 20 amps, for comparatively less power applications.still i added the BEC ( Battery Eliminator Circuit) as 5 volts 2 amps, to drive some HD servos.can lifted up to 6 volts if needed.Burst current can go up to 25 Amps, but the power device can hold 30 amps continuously.
and after testing a good sticker is a must..for a good look and confidence...

sorry..it is because of my poor internet connection..sorry..
here is the even more heavier ESC, is intended for big boats and ships. is rated 40, (but 60 Amps real), Amps, its really meant for multiple motor driving, with a mixing facility, that avoids the use of a conventional rudder. and can also used as normal with big or tiny motors as well. a fan is applied to cool the ESC when we use two high power motors in same line, by mixing. can operate from 6 Volts to 14 Volts, and will not heats up even with heavy loads. the fan is also connected to load comparison, so, it will not drain any un wanted current in idling. as load increases the speed of the fan also increases. and can add a simple switch, up to 7.4 Volts to 11.1 volts, LiPoly, so will shuts off the output, when the battery input reaches the lowest threshold, that saves the battery from over discharging. can adjust the threshold as we needs.its some heavy, weighs 37 grams, including all driving circuits. but still costs of two ice creams... :-)
BEC is divided in to two individual section, as can use two receivers in same frequency or coding, to get in depended motor control, instead of mixing.it allows to use any basic radio set, without a mixing functions.BEC is 5 volts 5 amps, as it is meant to handle HD servos.
add a good sticker after completion..

so, all respected Friends..please don't throw away your good brushed motors..all it are valuables..i will also add an ESC with reverse, without any switches..give me a little time to add all tips and circuits here..remember..we do not need any complicated circuits to make ESCs..all you need a good soldering iron, with solder paste with led, and yes some good high density wires...cool..and more and more wroooming lovely crafts for you all....yeeaaaahhhhh....... :-)
-
look forward to the circuit diagrams etc being added
-
Tree..i am making the drawings for the postings with CAD. a hand drawn circuits are not good to post. also making some good ESCs for brushed motors for on coming RC boat competitions..will post all..and i will guide you to make even more easy way that you need not any circuit diagrams..but only some external components... :-))

Recently joined - and just found this post.
Did it just fizzle out - or is there another thread somewhere........?

it stopped here. thats it.
sub john is helping me make esc's from old servos. hes designed a circuit and is testing it for me at the moment.
-
peeps have asked repetedly for the diagrams and parts needed to make this bus so far thers been no update on a few threads
-
Friends..sorry for the delay..i will post some good circuits here, as from own design, and its even easy to make one from a scraped servo..give me a little time..please..
-
its too tough to add photographs from here..anyway i will try to upload all related E S C settings from nearest town..will start from a simple but effective E S C, can make with a simple micro servo, with pin point accuracy, and will follow, dense, highly dense circuits, using the pulse expander..so, i hope the simple E S C will be more feasible to all of us, as it need only some basic components, and will haul a big load..for hours..also post a B E C circuit and assembly task here, as we can avoid a second battery pack, for receiver..it can haul up to 8 Amps..please do not anger on me..give me a little time..
-
not been angry krishna :-)) just the suspence waiting to sea haw youve done such good work :-))
-
sure..i will start a new posting, as it starts from a B E C, as most of us starts from a second battery pack for Rx. and i am already applied for a patency, for my circuit, as i came to know that my circuit is simple, but proven. please give me a little time, as at present, i am not able to post some pictures and diagrams, from my connection, as, i am getting a dialog box as, gateway time out..will post all..
-
Glad your back on here, Krishna - certainly we weren't angry - it was so interesting following your experiments that we all wanted to have a go!!
Sorry you are having a hard time with your internet connection - it must be so frustrating for you - I know it would be for me!! >>:-(
Mike
-
thank you Friend..i am already completed from a B E C, to E S C, and will post all by time, as i reaches my nearest town.i need any of my friends for that, because i cant drive my vehicle alone. will be back..
-
:-)) Hi , All looks very interesting will also await the diagram with interest. Does it have forward AND reverse?
Rayna

Rayna..this one is not reversible..but can add an H bridge to this circuit will complete..trying to upload all steps here...but facing some connection problem..will add all soon...am willing to start a full build log from a B E C, to E S C all in simple steps..i am looking for a high speed internet connection..
