Hi Folks
Ply - 1/32 & 1/64 - I think that is 0.4, 0.8mm
Can anyone recommend a supplier of such thin ply around Merseyside or further? I live in Huyton.
If nothing local then which mail order supplier do you recccomend please.
I know its a mundane question, but I just prefer to use recommended suppliers :-)
Regards Dave

Any half decent model aeroplane shop should stock or get it in days.
-
Dave,
Very hard to get hold of these days and if you can the cost is outrageous - I was quoted £56 + VAT for a sheet 5' x5' quarter inch, whatever that is in Napoleons measurement, I declined.
It must be available somewhere of course in 8'x4' sheets, but where I have no idea at were present. Suggest that you ring around the yards that are left and ask for aircraft ply; I'll be interested in the results of your quest.

hi dave...was looking at a sheet of 1/64th ply this morning at this shop..................
http://www.lancastermodelshop.co.uk/mall/infopageviewer.cfm/ModelAndHobbyWorld/HomePage
but beware...the price has gone up astronomically since I last bought a sheet of 4' x 1'.it was a cool £25.95 a sheet.....but they did have it and the 1/32 in stock and that wasn't any cheeper.
neil.

that seams quite cheap after the sheet I saw this morning LB.....works out at £2.65 a square foot, where as that at the shop this moring worked out at £6.50 a square foot. or was that for a sheet of 6mm.............in that case that sheet is very dear...can get an 8 x 4 6mm sheet around our end birch faced for 20 quid.
where was yours for sale at please.
neil.

Try the Balsa Cabin, they've got all kinds of ply
1/64" 1' x 4' £17.64
1/32" 1' x 4' £9.49
upto 6kg and under £46 cost, the postage is £6.00 so it might be worth getting a few other bits too.
Closer to you is Balsamart but the price is quite a bit higher.

Hi Lads
Not such a mundane question as I thought.
There are a couple of builders merchants on Wilson Rd so I think I will ask them.
Meanwhile - keep posting your suggestions :-))

as hs93 says or maybe Scale hobbies skelmersdale
-
Hi Lads
Mark (CF-FZG) - go to the Balsa Cabin - buy all the stock - and you can make a fortune down here mate O0
I went over to Frodsham today (40 minutes just to cross Runcorn bridge - and swimbo was giving it loads about the traffic and roadworks). I got some 1/32 & 1/64 - the staff were helpful with the other bits I bought, and when I mentioned 1/64th the guy looked up and warned me it was very expensive. Nor was he jesting! But at least they had eactly what I wanted --- apart from some two blade M4 props in various sizes around 30mm.
Not a word to the wife how much thin ply costs :-X

I see you've got what you want, but Scale Hobbies is just up the road from you, in Skem, and has good stock of boat stuff, (and some ply).
-
Yes Scale Hobbies in Skelmersdale - a small shop but plenty of boat stuff there lads. I just had a reason to be heading Frodsham way on Sat'
I'm new to the hobby (and it truly is an Art for some), so I went to quite a few NW model shops (I will have missed some though) and Scale Hobbies was the one that had stock on hand, and showed interest / willing to chat and advise me. It was well worth the very few pennies extra cost. To be honest I was surprised other shops were not interested - a sale is a sale ..... unless it's a sail that is ;)

Rennies in Bold Street Liverpool stock some and if you ask them nicely they will obtain what you want. They also stock plastic card KS metals and various modelling products. If you are a member of a club you will get 10% discount.
Joe :-)) :-)) :-))
-
How much was the 1/64 ?
-
I bought quite a few items I think 1/32 was about £6 or £8 a square foot and 1/64 was near £16 :o .......... I'm not 100% certain due to shock and awe.
I have ordered a safe and an altar for the ply.

I get stuff from model exchange, on the north wales coast road, takes about half hour from wirral. Its like going back in time! he has loads of ply, balsa, brass, ally, sheets, tube, rods etc etc and very reasonable prices, and he has a load of boat stuff, fittings etc, well worth a visit, and they open sundays! :-))
-
I think they close on tuesday or thursday though - so check if going. I passed by but had swimbo and ma in law in car <:(

An hour ago I picked up a sheet of 1/16th 4 feet by 1 foot ply from the model shop in Uddingston. This is, of course, nowhere near Merseyside. The shutter was half down, the door was open with the keys in it, and I just strode in (well, doubled up to get inside, if we're being literal, with a wary "Hello?" - always a useful phrase in case of a zombie outbreak.)
Within a moment, and not unlike Mr Ben, the shopowner appeared. He was just back from collecting some stuff, but more than happy to sell me some ply.
"£11.99"
...Which feels about right.
I do like that shop.

Go back and kiss the guy. I'll have to google Uddington?
I'll be on the welsh coast rd tomorrow so I will try to drop into the model exchange shop (funeral issues allowing)
Regards Dave
-
Uddingston, don't miss the S. Well over the border :D
-
It's a long long time since I crossed that line Duncan
but maybe I should because the radio said it was warmer in Aviemore yesterday than it was in Athens.
Maybe I could smuggle thin ply to Merseyside - it's well dearer than cannabis - and much much harder to find %% {-) %%
Dave
-
Yep , amazing considering we are further north than Moscow, North 57. %% I was out Springering , water was like glass, not a cloud in the sky. This time last year we were skiing on Cairngorm O0
-
I can just imagine you hurtling down a black run - skis singing - the wind rippling your Lycra springer costume {-)
-
Lycra ... LYCRA !!! are ye daft ? >>:-( Man this is the Highlands of Scotland..we dress sensibly for the hills up here :P Ye`ve keep yur springers warm ye ken :o
