Title: Radar 996 Type 23 Frigates
Post by: deadbeat on November 15, 2011, 04:36:47 pm
I've noticed that there's a new shape radar antenna (I assume for Radar 996) on top of the main mast of the Type 23 Weapon System building on Portsdown Hill, Portsmouth. i've yet to see it on a T23, but that doesn't mean its not already at sea. Modellers of T23 frigates may want to keep an eye out for this new antenna.

Yes it looks like, but it has a few more addons like the 'horns' from the original 996 aerial.

the Artisan (997) radar mentioned by allnightin is due to be fitted to Iron Duke in 2012 when she goes in for her refit next year - then the
rest of the class will also be fitted in due course.  It is a replacement for the 996 and within about 4-5 yrs they will be fitted with the
new CAAM missile system which will replace Seawolf.  The radar is capable of target acquisition, loacal air traffic control and navigation
and is said to be able to track an object as small as a snooker ball at 20kms and the missle will have a range of I think it is 25km
(far greater than the current Seawolf)
This is the only new radar I have heard mention of at the present time but no doubt there are things being tested that we don't know about.
