Title: Fibreglass expert wanted...
Post by: Patrick Henry on November 15, 2011, 06:01:03 pm
Is there any of you fibreglass experts who would be willing to make me a small fibreglass box? Just a basic oblong box, all in one piece, nothing fancy, I can get the access hole cut.

Measurements are: 130mm long x 90mm wide x 80mm high.

Can pay cash/paypal/cheque/whatever...

Would a plastic box from Maplins do you  ?  They have various sizes with screw down lids as well.

It will need to be 100% watertight, Ken, it's for a radio box in my Deep Quest...I'll take a look though.

I must say, I'd have to rule myself out on that one, Rich.....it's too small for me to be accurate enough to be watertight and as that is the main aim, I am sorry I wouldn't be able to do one.

Neil, the box itself is just a basic oblong, the access hatch is the bit that will need to be watertight, and that I can do easy enough...a piece of lexan for the hatch cover, O ring for a seal and half a dozen brass bolts to secure it.

But, thanks anyway mate.

the problem is mate, that you would have to make it in two halves around a plug to remove the plug, and then you would have to join it up again and being so small it would be virtually none feasable to an amature builder. You could however make a small box from 2mm ply, and coat that in grp with a final top coat of gel for water tight ness, and then make the opening and lid for it.......it's the only way at that size I could think around the problem, but the wooden box would remain inside the grp bnox for eternity.

Ok, I see your point Neil...making anything in fibreglass is a no go area for me now, my lungs just can't cope with it any more and my doctor has banned me from using the stuff, but I may be able to make something out of 3mm styrene sheet.

Thanks mate...

Hi Rich

Try an electrical wholesalers, we use various size adaptable connection boxes, these are rated up to IP67 so are waterproof to an extent...

I've just that second solved the problem Neil...found me a cylinder which could have been made for the job, it's fits that well.

Thanks everybody, much appreciated.

For your future edification, if you have a look in your local Supermarket, (especially Morrisons), they carry a range of hard plastic boxes that have lids sealed with an O-ring and four snap down seals on the four sides.
