Hello all.
I intend to build a Venetian Vaporetto which I hope to add quite a lot of scale detail, rust, dents, exhaust soot etc.
To this end I need some pictures of the destination board which I believe is an orange dot matrix fluorescent display.
I will use miniature fibre optics for the dots, illuminated by a single orange LED but havn't managed to find a decent close up photo.
Do you have any photos ? I wanted to do linea No. 1 P.LE ROMA, but any route will do.
Thanks.
Mike.

Hi Mike
I fancy watching this build hence the post - and I look forward to the paint job.

Thanks for the post Dave. As you know I have the other build to complete yet, but, given the Winter is here now which means no varnishing, I thought that I might start to gather the hardwear
and other bits and bobs.
I have all of the components to build the destination board but no close up photos, I'm struggling now.

Daft question Mike but where should the destination board be? there is something oragey on the first pic dead center.
The other two might be useful for little posters on the boat later.

glad i could help :-))

I am amazed at the detail available on modern photos - that is moving along and yet
if you click on the route plate you can read each destination - amazing really.

Thanks for your link Dave.
Mike's photo of the destination board is showing the more modern type as fitted to the later series of Vaporetti.
Your one is of the type fitted to earlier series. Both are wonderful and many thanks again to you both, I have been searching for a while now and not been able to come up with anything as good.
The only optical fibres that I have are 0.5mm dia. and I don't have many, so I think that the older one with the dot matrix type display is about all that I can take on realistically. The max size display board is 40mm x 23mm,
so will have to keep the destination name and route no. short .
It may not work out at all but I will give it a go.
Won't happen for a while but will post the results, good or bad.

with it being christmas theres loads of fibre optic stuff about used in toys etc:

it would take very little effort to convert this orange tree into an orange lightboard :}
-
Thanks Mike , interesting , wonder about the fibre diameter ?
Other Mike.

i dont know about your area where you live but there must be bargain shops and poundland etc. Even card shops sell stuff like this for a quid or something. Its amazing the amount of the stuff thats about that can used in our hobby and all thats needed is a small phillips screw driver and a bit of fettling. :-))
-
I agree Mike.
The fibres that I have are from a Poundland Christmas tree.
Sad really, whenever I go into a shop these days all that I think is, "Is that any use for modelling, or, that might make a good ??? ".
-
I think we all do it. Problem is sometimes you see something hmm that could be of use and its on something thats embarrassing to buy lol.
I couldnt tell you in the fibres on that christmas tree are small enough, thats the gamble though.
-
Im sorry and may sound a bit dumb are you saying that the pic i sent you is the old version or the new version?
-
actually looking further into the detailing of the pic the dimensions are 4.33 inches high and the width is 1.65 inches. so the image on your computer screen is roughly the same size as the real thing. Therefore judging by the scale of those fibres id expect them to be much thinner than 0.5mm possibly 0.2
only drawback is there only a few inches long too {:-{ worth a try for 1.89 i would have thought though.
-
Instead of fiber optics, I would use one thin layer of black, opaque plastic, drilled to let the light go though, behind it, a 1 mm thin piece of plastic, transparent, painted in orange at the back, and one single little bulb, make a box around it and you have your sign, unless you wish to be able to change the route by the flick of a button on your radio )))))
