HELLO ALL,
Now have copy of kingston peridot by tom gorman ,
but now need some history of full size , IE deck details and other bits and bobs ,
had a look at the first class model on hull web site , bit out my depth that standard of build ,
plan is a starter but not build detail so looking for help , need more guide lines ,
this my first go at a class build looking forward to the challenge , hope i haven't took to much on, ........LARRY.. :embarrassed: O0
-
HIALL,
I had no response on details of peridot , so would go for a dummy build using card ,
so would not messup on master build, card is cheaper than styrene, also i now have a set of templates for build;
see dummy build pics .......LARRY

all I know larry is that she had a pretty inauspiscious life until her very tragic end in 1968, when she was lost with all hands off Kopasker,Iceland on the 27/28 january 1968.
she had a sister ship called ST Apollo which was scrapped in 1974.
apart from that there isn't a great deal of history on her, as she was just like any other deep sea trawler..a good steady earner.
neil.
-
THANK YOU FOR REPLY,
I have read the goggle page it was tragic , heath and safety is different today,
i spent 8yrs in hull in the 50Ty's with the army as a TA instructor ,
had a lodging on hessle rd near the fish docks when hull and grimsbury had fishing industry ,
used to the trawlers returning well , loaded and weather beaten ,
hard live for a fish supper...........LARRY...
-
HI ALL,
A BIT MORE WORK DONE, wheel house and cabins in styrene sub deck temporary fitted.
this was hard work F/G hull all distorted and different to plan had to use a jig set up taken of plan bad mould when built
hull bought at boat fair said to be hobby store hull , so is the plan, but got there in the end looks ok so far........
but hard work, LARRY.. :((

Larry, If you are going to continue with your build log, could you ask the mods to put it in the working vessels section where we can all watch it with interest, rather than keep thinking you are after another trawler plan in the wanted section.
neil.

Moved across from the Wants Section as the subject is very interesting.
More details please Larry

Arh, that's better Larry.
in answer to your question, I have always skimmed the bulwarks with polyester filler ( car body p38 type stuff) and then sanded it to a nice smooth finish....turns out well.

-
THANK YOU Neil,
Thats the method i think i am going to do,
the F/G is so many differentness in thickness ,
and the top hand rail is important to the finish,...at the cover deck at the stern,
also i am still looking on line for detail of deck works and finish.......Larry...

-
hi yorkie,
thank you for reply that's a long time on trawlers, in the 50Ty's i was stationed in hull ,
attached to the TA as a instructor on armoured transport.
had digs in Hassle rd , and used to go on fish docks and watch the trawlers unloading the bobers and porters where unbelievable
and many a date fish lady , you say you have a plan of a trawler which one i am working from does not have a lot detail.
also i am looking for deck detail like winches and other deck clutter, i am not going to build a fully detailed model haven't got that
experience . only been modelling 2 yr , but getting a bit better, this is a big build for me, so hope you can help......Larry...
-
HI Derek ,
thank you for interest , getting better at key board O0 and the build pictures will come when i get a bit info on details,
and the cash flow gets better, have three models awaiting bits and bobs, on the slip way %%
as build so far working on the rough bulwarks and distorted hull shape , but getting there :-)).......LARRY...
-
Hi Larry.
I can send you a few pics of my model of the Southella by e-mail or try to upload them.

http://www.dropbox.com/downloading
Hi Larry
re file swapping
that link will get you Dropbox. It is for doing something on one device and it updates the file on all your devices.
I didn't use it for that though. It is a great tool for sharing any type of file. Basically any file you put in Dropbox
gets it's own link which you can send to your buddies - they click link and download the file. It won't play with
folders though. What I did for a lot of files was put them all in a folder - Zipped the folder into one file - put that
in Dropbox, and then sent Carl the link. One link got him 950 files - no emailing, no uploading, maybe 5 minutes work, FREE
Oh yes - Dropbox is also like a backup (if you use it) and if you lose data on your pc - Dropbox still has both it and the older versions of it. :-))
I am enjoying your build
Dave
-
Hi LarryW.
I will try again to upload a pic of the Southella.

Hi LarryW.
This is another on of my pics.

good morning Eric
Thank you for pictures very helpful i hope my build will come to your standards /.
I tried to contact HMBG but having a bit of bother trying login
I keep contact with you on here thank you again for your help and pictures.
I like to see if your plan is different ,to mine ,
Have the bulkheads smoothed out now, will start bulkhead supports when i work out spacings no detail on my drawing {:-{
Your photo will help ..........Larry...
-
Hi Larry.
The drawing I have is No MM1482 but I can send you a plan of the Peter Scott another Hull Trawler it may help and I will upload some more pics, I also have an anchor I can send you.
If you e-mail me your address I will send them off.
yorkie1
-
,Hi Eric,
Thank you , that is nice of you Larry.
-
Hi Larry.
Posted off the plan of Peter Scott plus one anchor,I have also put in a disc with some of the original yard drawings of the Southella they may be of some use but you will have to be aware that the drawings have been locked away in a cupboard for about forty years plus so like all of us with advanced years they have developed a few wrinkles :-)
Yorkie1
-
HI ERIC
Thank you you are a star, had look at your model on hmbg web page , GREAT still having a problem login so can only visit as a guest .
hope you are well , so you keep up the first class building of trawlers, and if there's any thing i can help you with send me a post.....Larry... :-))
-
Hi Larry.
Another pic of the Peridot if you zoom in you may get a bit more info, what you may noticeis that the bridge is swept back and ther is only one derrick on the mast, but that will not make a deal of difference to your model.
Yorkie1
-
Hi Yorkie,
A good picture , of bridge deck, just shows how the plan is out of step, but now i can make changes.....Larry..
-
Hi YORKIE, ,
Good news , received plan and CD today , and anchor, a bit more info to get a bit more progress to build on.
Thank you again, you are real friend , if you need the plan back let me no as i get a fresh copy made. ......cheers Larry.... :-))
-
Hi Larry.
No I don't need the plans you can pass them around when you have finished with them.
yorkie1
-
HI Yorkie.,
Thank you , will get on when weather gets better still a lot of filling and sanding to do ,.
What did you use for top hand rail also the net hauls Larry...
-
Hi Larry.
For my handrails I started off buying brass rails and brass wire but on a pension it proved rather expensive so I improvised.a mate gave me some half inch mesh and cut out bits here and there and painted them.
For the net haulers I think you may mean the gallows the red shapes on the side of the boat,I made them out of 4mm plastic H bar, hope this helps
-
Hi Yorkei,
Thank you for reply, that's a great money saver , yes that's what i meant , any more build tips will be useful .
you are only member that's in touch. by the way its my 76 birthday to day so cheers LARRY :-))

Happy Birthday to you both :-))
Re Yorkie being the only member in touch - well I agree I'm not much use technically but I am here watching, and I can see Kenny, Derek, Neil, Umi and Brian have all popped in.
So you are not (in Rab C Nesbitts words) 'sailing this ship alone'. :embarrassed: :}

Happy Birthday.

Hello Yorkie .
Its been a bit cold to work in out side work shop the hull to large to work on in side,
and its still in the sand and fill stage , but have a lot decks cut out and crew cabins .
looking at starting stern cabin covered deck and life boat station bits when can work out drawing, ...LARRY...
-
Hi Larry.
I know what you mean about the cold I do not have a shed or garage so I had to do all my work out side so it took me many months to finish my model, here is a pic of the boatdeck of my Trawler most of them are very similar
-
Good Morning YORKIE ,
Thank you for picture , does your cover deck lift of ? .
i am making mine fixed when shaft is fitted and rudder link , also i notice it curved down to the bulwarks and curved at the stern this is rely busy bit of the build.
your life boats look good did you scratch them ? also did you make your own port holes ?
As for progress made funnel template's and a balsa mould to try build lifeboats will post some pictures soon .....Larry...
-
Hi Larry.
I will post a pic of how my boat deck lifts off so that I can get to the running gear,my portholes are just brass type eyelets from any hardware store, and my lifeboats I traced out the shape of the boat from the top view and cut out the shape in thin ply I then traced the shape of the keel and did the same and glued them together and filled them in with balsa and then did a lot of sanding and shaping.
Good luck.
Yorkie1
-
Hi Larry.
I made my funnel out of 1"3/4 wast pipe and it works to scale fine and the cap at the top of the funnel is the shaped washer for waste pipe screw joints.
Has you can see from the pics I left my boatdeck supports attached to the hull I think this was a mistake I sholld have attached to the boatdeck because when working on the running gear they are a pain.
yorkie1
-
thank you for reply, here are the pictures of build so far, cut out rudder area and as you can see sub decks fitted and bulwarks dont look to bad now
got work out supports not shown on drawings will have to do a bit guessing , can you see the top of bulwarks hand rail i will be using Larry..

Hi Larry.
Looking good so far.
For the supports I used matchsticks from the model shop I bought a huge bag for about £4 quid it was the only size they sold, but now I have a huge bag of matchsticks that I will never use,so not one of my best ideas.
Yorkie1
-
Hi yorkie,
thank you for reply, another good idea :-)), may be you sell the surplus on sales and wants, question what did you use for top rail ? Larry
-
Hi Larry.
For the top rail I used I think 3mm plasticard it is easy to cut and shape and with super glue it stuck well to the hull.
Yorkie1
-
Hi , Thank you....Larry
-
Hi Larry.
Just a couple of things that may help you,for the mast stays I used a type of thread with rubber in the middle it does not sag like normal thread after it gets a bit damp, and for the galley funnel and the foc'sle funnel I used the middle of a Biro pen and super glued them.
yorkie1

hi sorry for late reply computer problems , Larry..

THANK YOU DAVE,
A good site , looking for life boat davits now, why don't the plan draftsmen draw sections ? it would make life a lot easer
thats why i like James Pottinger plans they cover the complete boat from stem to stern :-)) Larry... .
(http://s14.postimage.org/k7gu6hejh/2012_02_29_001.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/k7gu6hejh/)
-
what scale is your trawler Larrie?
-
Because Larry,
it takes time to do all the details, and time costs money. Most draw a model boat, with enough to get the outlines right, and then assume the modeller will have photo and other evidence to fill in the gaps.
Draughtsmen, like James Pottinger, draw the original boat, and record as much detail as they can as a truer record of the original boat. Usually, but not always they are also paid to produce them, where as the model draughties usually work for themselves or other model business', hence the limiting budget.

Hi Larry.
I cannot find any paperwork on motor but it runs on a 12volt 15 amp system I used an 8 inch prop shaft with a 3 blade right hand propeller I think I could have used a 6 volt system but with the extra power it is handy to be able to get you out of trouble if there are sailing boats on the pond.
Yorkie1

Hi Larry.
Just had a look at my motor and this is on the label.
MFA Como drills
919 D series
Single ratoi gearbox
4.5 15V DC
Hope this helps.

Hi All ,
A bit more work on trawler , deck hatches and winches , cover deck and life boats sorted first winch i made was at wrong scale do to print error ,
must do better , looking at drawing i am using is nothing like the real Kingston peridot crew and bridge deck slope back on the real one but on the drawing it is strait .,
done to much now to rectify so it is now just a trawler, also a lot of f/g hull work to get it right bad moulding , and does not match the drawing no wonder it was in rummage sale.
so onwards and upwards :-)) Larry....
