My good friend Pete Keirle (PMK) died today. Pete had an horrendous final year in which his health problems multiplied one after another to an unbelievable degree, and finally he had to give way to cancer. He was 50.
I have just spoken to his sister Margie who has spent the last three months looking after him 24/7; she is in pieces, as are Liz and I.
I know he could be an awkward bloke for some to deal with - he ruffled a few feathers on this forum in his time - but he was a genuine one-off; far brighter than he gave himself credit for, very articulate and hugely funny, selfless to the extent of spending his time and money for no other reason than to be of help to others. 'Blah Blah' as he might have said.
We will miss him very much.
Please send any messages of condolence for the family via myself or John Elsy (Bluebird) - we will pass them onto Margie.

I never knew the gentleman and to die so young is tragic. At least he was loved and devotedly cared for. may he rest in peace. John.
-
Dave,
So sad to hear your news about Pete.
Yes he could be a bit ..........................
But he was a character and the Forum is a lesser place without him.
Please give my heartfelt condolences to his family.

Dave,
I only knew Pete through the Forum and from some lively but generally civil exchanges of PMs. He was obviously passionate about what he believed in and told it as he saw it and was prepared to take any flak as a consequence. As you say, he was a genuine one off with a very original offbeat sense of humour and they don't make many like that.
50 is no age, I thought from his health problems and general 'hippy' persona that he was older. A cruel end indeed and nobody deserves that.

Please send my sincere condolences to his family

pete did some electronic work for me last year, I never actually met him, but was a true gent and would not take any payment for his services, such was his generosity, our hobby has lost a very nice and talented person
-
Please convey my condolence to the family.
I had not met him though he helped me several times with electrical systems for my models.
I found him so very helpful and he made me some "gizmo's" which did what I wanted even though he would not give me any details for payment for the little things that made such a big difference to me
A very sad loss at such a young age
Richard.

The Black art will be definitely Blacker with his loss. <:( <:( <:(

Very sorry to hear this sad news. I had a few friendly exchanges with PMK here on the forum as well as through PMs, but had no idea of his state of health. Please pass on my sincere condolences to his family, Dave.
Peter.

Very sad news, will miss the chats on the Phone, and the cat Jokes.

So very sorry to hear this news, I got on very well with Pete, and like a lot of others, we shared some very lively banter on Mayhem.
Yet another good man taken from us far too early.
Rest in peace Pete....sleep well.
My sincere condolences to his family,
Rich

Like many of you, I never met him, but had some good banter and help from him. I considered him to be an great on line ally. I have missed him recently and will continue to do so.
-
Sorry to hear about Pete , Iris and I went and saw him at home last year and we had a great time with him , the world is a sadder place without him , as he kept saying to me while we were with him ,respect; happy sailing and flying Pete and now it,s my turn to say to you Respect
Bob
-
The world just became a slightly sadder place.
Rest in Piece, Pete.
I hope they let you trade in your guitar for a harp. Maybe an electric one.
-
Totally shocked at the news of Pete.
Like many members of the forum I enjoyed some lively chats with him, always without exception well worth the reading. I knew that his health was very poor but, in his own way, he played down the effects it was having on him. In his own typical style he was always more concerned about the well being of others than his own state. To use his own saying "it's only a touch of blah blah".
My sympathies go to his family, a real good guy who 'll be sadly missed by those who had dealings with him.
Rest in peace Pete.

And finally a word (from mid-December) from the self proclaimed "two-bit yokel renowned for p*ss*ng-off cardiologists and doctors in general" himself:
Put it this way, if you don’t Rx a reply from me when you think you should then I think it’ll be safe to assume that the big day has indeed arrived. But no need for tears, sadness or any of that nonsense. Consider it a good day – a day finally rid of gloom, pain, whinging, etc. If you have to make that confirmation phone call to Margy or Jo, just do it with a spring in your stride – none of that usual sadness BS, dig?
Good man!
Family has agreed to scatter my ashes between the borders of Wiltshire and Dorset. (i.e: anywhere other than sh*tty Somerset). If ever you find yourself burstin’ for a pee on the Wilts/D’set border try to avoid the actual county line.
I think it would have greatly amused the man to have his last Forum posting in blue............... 8)

Excellent Dave. Pete to a T. The moderators nightmare {-)
Not sure if he would have approved with the blue, historically speaking, but would have undoubtedly seen the joke.
Will think of him whenever I cross the border. We used to joke about my water pills. ;)
-
A true free spirit but sensitive to others, in my experience. RIP

That brought another tear to my eye....Beautiful, I am sure Pete would approve.
-
A sad day indeed.
My deepest condolences to the family.
RIP Pete, we never did have that cider.
-
I never met him but wondered why the posts had slowed down - he'll be missed. My condolences to his family - their loss is the most keenly felt, but the loss is widely shared.
-
very sad, how does one put into words the feelings when you have just lost a good friend - sometimes it makes you question life itself. Peter is going to be a big miss to me and others.
Thinking of you.
John

As a moderator who felt Pete's wrath on a couple of occasions, I think his last message being in blue writing is brilliant.
Thanks Dave :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi Dave, I never knew your friend PMK, but none the less I feel sad for both you & his family today. Anytime we lose a forum member that is a sad day indeed, today is one of those days. Mick B.
-
Dave.
I haven't posted on here for ages but look in occasionally just to see what you're all up to.
I have just seen this thread and am shocked to read of PMK's demise. I shared a few pm's with Pete in the past, he impressed me as a 'real bloke' and came across as a truly genuine chap. He spoke his mind, and yes, he ruffled a few feathers in his time but that for me was one of his endearing traits, 'when PMK posted, people sat up and read'!
We had never met but promised we would share a pint one day, what an opportunity I've missed. It's a great shame the miles between us were so many, I believe it would have been a night around the campfire to remember.
Now the Dude has scarpered owing me that pint!
Pete, you won't be forgotten, next time I want a pint I'll buy two...one for me and one for you Dude!
To Pete's family, my deepest sympathies for the loss of one of life's true characters.
With sadness

My condolences to his family,
I enjoy his website and his posts in the past
I hope it remains in appreciation of what he has contributed to the hobby.

Pete's funeral will be at 4.00pm next Thursday at Taunton Deane Crematorium. ACTion will be closed for the day while Liz and I attend (weather permitting). I'm sure a lot of other Mayhem members will be there, if only in spirit.

Pete's sister rang me last night , she is really cut up as you would expect , would love to go to his funeral but alas it is a long way so i will have a pint at about the right time , Pete was a great guy shame Iris and I will never have a cup of tea out of the teapot he bought especially for our visit .............Cheers
Pete it was an honour to have known you
Bob

Margie rang me yesterday as well. I too would have loved to attend the funeral but owing to my ill health its not possible.
However my thoughts will be there with you Pete.
You will always be to me one of life's true characters and a friend.
Sorely missed Dude.
-
How very sad. I only discovered his website last week - and downloaded some very useful circuits!!
As a recent member on this Forum, I never had the pleasure of reading any of his posts - but it sounds
like his wit would have appealed to me - never met Pete to my knowledge - but we only live 4 miles away!!
Did he have any connection to flying - I see reference in a couple of posts?
Is it possible to post a photo of him, Dave - I'm half tempted to attend on Thursday anyway.

We have just returned from the trip to Taunton to say farewell to Pete. If he knew how much we'd shelled out in petrol and hotel bills to get to his funeral he'd have had my little bits for paper weights..... Still, we just had to be there. His sister Margie is still trying to come to terms with his loss but she did E-Mail me a comment which I'd like to pass on to you guys:
"I felt like my heart wanted to burst with sheer pride at what members of the Model Boat Forum wrote about him."
So long, dude - it's good to have known you.
Dave & Liz M
-
Thanks for that Dave, really wish I could have been there.
As you say. Nice to have known you Dude.
-
Thanks for that Dave. Hope you and Liz do not suffer too much, during what is a difficult time for you both as well as Pete's family..
-
Commiserations and condolences to all those concerned at this, the saddest of times.
Sleep well, Pete...sleep well.
Rich

Glad you made it Dave, we need to do these difficult things at certain times in our lives to show our humanity to each other. I feel your sadness. I hope your friend rests peacefully.Mick B.
-
Its horrible to think that someone suffered in their last year of life and I'm sad to read that. My thoughts are with his family.
-
It is good that these fora provide people with the opportunity to pay tribute to the departed, and that this is some comfort to the bereaved. My daughter's best friend has just died and she is borne up the his fellow canoeists' memories of him.
