I am shortly going to fit some hand rails on my boat but the only stanchions that
I've seen have very small holes for the Hand Rail ie 0.7 mm dia.(2 rail type)
The wire for the hand rail does seem to be very thin? I was expecting to use something like 1.5mm dia
- this would be a bit more substantial in my mind?
Does anyone use anything larger please?

What scale is your boat ?
Normally used for handrails is 1.0mm top rail 0.8mm middle rails
0.8mm top rail 0.5mm middle rails
-
Hi Richard, scale would be something like 1:20
Your dimensions are much the same as any fittings that I have come across
except that on my boat someone has previously fitted much larger dia which still looks
in scale to my eyes.
However , I suppose once I fit a wooden handrail over the top it doesn't much matter!
What do you use.?

I would normally use the 1.0mm and the 0.8 mm
I assume your stanchions are about 20mm.
Having said that, it is better to get your rails the same size as the holes in the stanchions. Your supplier should be able to give you this information.
-
The stanchions I am using are 35mm around the bow and continuing on down the boat with about 25mm height.
2 Rail type. The wire supplied is 0.7mm brass and quite flexible hence my concern.
I did wonder whether anyone has tried to open holes in stanchions a little.

Once you solder the wire in you will find it is really rigid though I would have thought 1.00mm would have been better for top rail.
Is it wire you have or brass rod ?

Is it one strand or more ?
-
Just a single strand of brass wire. threaded through one hole in stanchion only in picture.
Using this wire in both holes of stanchion.
