Title: add a working turret to our crafts in an even more easier way..
Post by: rathikrishna on February 24, 2012, 06:03:46 pm
Modellers..after posting about to adding a turret, with a reworked servo, i got lots of blessings and happy notes from all over the Globe..from many Modellers..and after few days, i started to receiving some more personal requests to add a turret with some more easy way..in reality, the main problem is related to servo rework..i realizes that only a few among us are capable to open a servo, and to rework on it..and some of the Seniors are repeatedly asking for a way to add a turret on their crafts..that, they are not going to rework on a servo..and secondly, they are un able to buy a servo streacher..so, one senior modeler is angry on me..sorry for the delay..was working on many crafts..we can starve..but how can we live without making a craft..? is it possible to add a working turret without opening it..and without a servo streacher..?  cool..
what we need..?  we need nothing but some more handy things..here we starts..
take a micro, or standard servo, all according to you..and to the size of the craft..

now..take two plastic pullies, one small and one big, big means five times bigger than the smaller one..this pullies can scrap from old tape recorders, walkman, and VCRs..and can also found in robotic kits and more..or you can make it from foam board, brass etc..

old walkman capstan is a best bet..
take a big pulley, and slice off any protuding parts..from it..make it clean..and make sure it's base is flat..

now drill a big hole through the existing small hole, that, allows a servo mounting, or apropriate size screw through it..
and drill a 4 mm hole on small pulley, and inser a piece of bicycle spoke as shown..

take a circular flange from servo kit, and place it on the shaft as shown..make sure it is prfectly fit..
now take the drive belt of walkman, or can also use silicon rubber bands..

take a servo mounting screw or any screw that feel apropriate..
screw the big pully on to the servo drive shaft..

take a piece of brass or copper,or plastic tube that allows the size of the bicycle spoke..through in..
insert the little pully with spoke as shown..make sure the spoke is free in it..

take a piece of foam board, and make a cutting for servo..
fix servo in to hole..please do not glue it..but with screws..

fix the small shaft, and tube we made earlier like this..use this photographs as a guide..

load the drive belt in to groves..and fix the circular flange..glue it..

make sure the belt is in line..
take your turret ..

stick a piece of foam board under turret..
and stick it on the circular flange...

will it work..? nicely..and here you can see an other simple idea..when the main big pully turns, the smaller lully will turn 5 times..so, a 30 degree rotation drives the smaller pully to almost 360 degree..!! and can adjust the angle of rotation in to any degree by choosing various pullies..all of my materials and ideas are keys..all we can make it from gigh quality materilas, and stuffs, and can take our own time to finish our models with great detail..here we do not used any extra ordinary materials..all handy..need not any complicated electronics circuits, no servo streachers..no servo reworks..all simple..and even a child can do.. :-)) :-))
can see the simple BEC..

World's fastest gun turret! Enough to give the tank commander whiplash or eject him altogether.  :-))

Any ideas as to slowing it down and making it stay where you want it?

Action electronics servomorph

Action electronics servomorph

I agree
I use the same type of pulley set up on my Robbe PT 15 with one of Action,s servomorph
with it you can adjust the travel speed and the angular degrees of the turret.
It can also be linked to more than one turret at a time.
My servomorph operates both front and rear gun turrets.

Great info. Thanks!  :-))

But yeah, turrets are painstakingly slow and realism is a chief concern. Kind of brings up the servomorph for use as a rudder servo also (if possible). I see lots of RC ship drivers snapping their rudders from full starboard to full port in a moment's notice. Kind of unrealistic as in real life it took many turns of the ship's wheel and some bit of time to put a vessel's rudder to full "anything" and turns were gradual.

Also despise seeing scale warships come to a full stop within their total length and reverse on the spot, but I digress...

Yes, slower thumbs!

more often than not you need to come to a full stop to avoid collisions,or would you prefer  to set your boat at "ramming speed" as some do,and think they have a god given right to go where they want? I think more of my models than to allow a collision, especially when there are very unpredictable stick and rags on the pond, and to ~~~~ with scale slow downd and turns even in an emergency.?MOST modellers work together, but even then accidents can happen, and what about an agressive swan like we have, and we rally need our wits and fast thumbs to get away from one of those chasing your model at full pelt!

I agree Big Ada; slower thumbs!  {-)

And while I agree with you rottweiler, that operating an RC vessel has pitfalls especially in regard to the inconsideration of others and wildlife, there are just those guys who out of habit operate their scale ships, big lumbering warships in our case, like the "go fast" and toy-like speedboats that seem to be all the rage.

Believe me I like to have "emergency power" to escape potential collisions, large waves and waterfowl. Cannot agree with you more.

But I guess the key here is... slower thumbs indeed.
