Title: Chinese Plywood - Whats the pink stuff!
Post by: Jon on March 24, 2012, 02:38:54 pm
Ive acquired a reasonable amount of 2.5mm plywood from inside packing crates from China.
The quality is variable, but some sheets have large areas of quite acceptable wood.
The thickness is very consistent, although large knots are on the surface in some areas.

Anyway to the point, anybody know what the pink stuff under the surface may be?
I don't think it's the glue as it's not in every layer, I'm wondering if its some sort of water barrier, or even pest control!

Ive just started building my next Tug, an 1/8th scale Motorflote, using a mix of this stuff and UK 1/4ply,
As I say it seems to be OK stuff but just concerned the lurid pink may be something to be worried about, or even a benefit  :o

Comments?

I'll go out on a limb
I'm guessing that the pink is just dye to used to identify the manufacturer.
The pink could also be a means of visual quality control to confirm coverage.

And last ..
The glue hopper was getting low.. :-))

I don't think its for pest control or anything..the chemicals would have to be identified and a whmis or mds package would have to be made available to custom's before entering the country.

I did a little searching and found that Chinese suppliers(1000's of them) offer plywood offer different finish of plywood, grade's and glue colors.

Thanks for that, sounds feasible.
I know certain countries refuse to accept wooden crates/pallets from china due to possible wood borne contaminants/bugs.
Thanks for taking the time to search.
I was just watching all the pink dust coming off the router, thinking this is prob bad for me.. (I do wear a mask, but still!)

Afternoon
The Pink is the glue used to bond theply together the pink colour is so that during manufacture the coverage can be seen if clear difficult to see if areas have not been glued
The glue is quite possibly resoursinal not sure of the spelling which is a waterproof adhesive similar to cascamite.

Regards
Colin

I looked it up, and apparently the pink stuff is an airborne variant of the ebola virus... that is capable of penetrating dust masks... especially if the dust has been generated from a router... whilst making a model boat. Wikipedia is not always right, so I wouldn't worry too much.  :}
