Evening all, just thought I'd pop on a couple of pictures of my latest project. It's a part built 1/72 scale Prinz Eugen. It's 10'6" long and all the work done so far has been done to a very high standard. I've got literally piles of plans and pieces to go through, it should make for an interesting project over the next few months. Any advice and links to similar builds would be appreciated. Watch this space for further progress, might be a couple of weeks though as I've got to finish setting up my workshop in my new home with my wonderful (and very understanding!) fiancee. Dave. :-))
-
Is that the 1 shipmate60 was doing?
-
Hi Dave, looks like a very nice boat and a worth while build. No wonder you wanted a bigger car.
john

Yes she was mine.
Just glad to see her going to get finished.
The box on the after deck contains more superstructure and part built turrets.

Hi there Bob, she's gone to a good home and will be finished off and well looked after. I think Russ has got more than enough on his plate with his builds at the moment, lol! I've only picked it up today and haven't had much chance to look at it yet.
It was a struggle to fit in my new Citroen Picasso and will have to be carried in a purpose made roof box when complete.
Dave. :-))
-
Dave,
If you have any questions about her just ask.
I was sorry to see her go, but just didn't have the heart to complete her.
Did Russ give you the plastic kit as well I bought it for a 3D plan and was going to RC her as well.
Bob
-
Hi there Bob, yes, had all the stuff with it that you gave Russ including the small kit. Thanks for the offer of help, just sent you a pm, must have been typing it while you were replying, lol.
Dave.

It looked a very nice model when I saw it in shipmates garage, though from memory he was still planking the deck at that time. Can't wait to see the finished model!

Hi Dave,
this should turn out to be an interesting build,I look forward to the progress (and tips I will glean from it),so keep posting Piccys.Like most of the Kriegsmarine Navy, their ships were beautiful to look at,shame really that so many ended up at the bottom of the ocean.Prinz Eugen survived the war, only to be blown to smithereens during the nuclear bomb tests at Bikini Attoll.

In fact Prince Eugen wasn't blown up during the test. She remained afloat despite a 500-pound phosphorous fragmentation bomb and 2 Atomic bomb blasts. She sank in December 1946 some months after the test in the April of that year. She suffered damage below the waterline during the second A bomb test, which was underwater, and her sea valves gave way. She rests in the crater of Bikine Atoll although her port screw was returned to Germany in the late 70s where it was put on display at the German Naval Memorial at Laboe where it resides today.

Thats interesting to know! I wonder if the wreck has been filmed? I have never seen anything in that way,but I am sure someone will know? Likewise the Tirpitz,I know she turned turtle with her upturned hull photographed lots of times, but I have never seen any type of underwater shots of her, although she is still dived on I believe?

Tirpitz was largely scrapped in situ. Very little left of her now.

Thanks Bob, that led me to a very interesting 7 minute film of the life of the Eugen, including underwater scenes, at http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=kOqjVf5Ibdw&NR=1

Hi all, I'm back after a brief absence from Mayhem. Progress slow but steady on Prinz Eugen, some pictures of work done so far. First time it's all been together for over 12 months.
Anyone any ideas where I can get hold of 1/72 scale AA armaments? Struggling to source parts, have checked lots of plastic kit manufacturers without much success so far... Dave.
-
Shows what old age does to ones memory Dave, well mine anyway! I had completely forgotten that I had seen and commented on her previously! Good Luck with her.

Dave,
I was looking at 1/72 Airfix German Trucks, some had the 4 barrel weapons.
Wasnt there 1 with her you could use as a pattern?

Hi Dave
This might be what your looking for

Hi there guys, sorry for the slight delay in replying, I've been away with work for a couple of days.
Those Italeri ones look interesting I'll have a closer look at them Glen, thanks for the link.
Hi Brian, there were 2 of the 4 barrel flak C/38 w Vierling L. C/38 2cm cannons, I'll have to make another 5. The main ones I'm looking for are the 40mm Bofors cannon, single barrel on a single mount, there are total of 18 of them to build! Could just do with a scale one so I can simplify it and make them myself. May have to look around in different scales.
There are a couple of others too:
6x 37mm Flak C/30 L/83 cannon (twin barrel)
8x 20mm Flak L/65 model C/30 cannon (twin barrel)
I'll keep looking around, part of the fun of the hobby is finding all the stuff. If I can't I'll build my own, just one thing am short of is time...
Dave. :-))

For the twin 20s you might find some of these useful,
http://www.zvezda.org.ru/?lng=1&nav=&cat=7&set=6117
They're a hard plastic kit - about £2.50 - and you could probably bring two together to make the mount. I thought they also did a German Bofors but there is a British Bofors planned for this year - also in 1/72

White Ensign Models make a twin 20mm in resin withe photo-etch. They also make a 37mm single. Check out;

Building along nicely.
A small video of myself pushing the Prinz around on what I think was her maiden voyage but Bob will correct me if I'm wrong.

We cannot show live videos on here, so if you could post a reference as to where it might be seen, that would be great.
Cheers

Hey, that's nice. :-))
A little tip is to post the image code, rather than the photobucket address, as this will only show the picture you want us to see.
Hope this helps
