Thames Jubilee pageant anyone watching %) Some interesting vessels.
-
Just missed the Beeb reporter talking to the ASRL crew but caught "Flying Christine lll "
Regards Ian.
-
What can possibly go wrong %) Biggest blunder ever was HMRY Brittania isnt there, if ever a ship should have been, it was her. :((
-
arrow5..... :-)) ..its about to start on OZ in about one hour .....I would love to watch.....but must go to work tomorrow & hence a few hours sleep time......
PS we have an OZ surf boat with an all OZ female rowing team in the 999 vessels
Our love to our girls       ..Derek
-
I`ll look out for the Aussie boat, I know what Oz girls are like %% :} ok2 ;) %). I spotted a "Veron" style vintage Thames police boat , the rowers have started to get into position.
-
Truly impressive!
I'm watching the whole thing while posting photos from Wicksteed...

-
Wish we had seen more of the Maori war canoe, the nautical haka with the paddles was good. :-)) Some interesting "Dutch" canal barges.
-
I found the coverage a bit disappointing just glimpses at some of the boats was hoping for a bit more focus on the boats rather than all the presenters
Dave
-
Am watching it on Sky news, the BBC coverage and commentary is as usual absolutely abysmal.
-
Yeah I swapped over to Sky news,to find much better coverage, more about the pageant than the presenters.Worse part was the adverts, but worst of all was Incessant moaning of Eamonn Holmes, saying he wished they would speed up so he could go home out of the rain. While all the spectators were out in the rain and enjoying it,I bet the overfed Holmes was being paid far too much as usual. My admiration for the choir who sang the National Anthem, absolutely soaked to the skin, but looking like they were really enjoying it all.
-
I went the other way. Started off on sky news but had to give up and go to BBC = couldnt take any more of that idiot Eamon Holmes. Has to be the most obnoxious person on TV. Im not a violent person but.............
-
I agree, he always looks like he would rather be some where else, which is fine by me! Did he not take out some sort of court order to stop people talking about his size?
Roy

Now!!.......I was looking out for her, and mised her....bummer!!! {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{
but |I taped it all so will look through again......any idea about time Circlip.
neil.

Anyway....................highlights????
For me, the beginning and the end;
The Queen on her lovely Barge from HMY Britannia pulling away from the Chelsea Pier to huge cheers and triumphal whistles from LMS loco Princess Elizabeth, and then right at the end, the London Philharmonic Orchestral barge with Pomp & Circumstance, Blue Peter and the National Anthem, closing with the bascules of Tower Bridge closing to deafening cheers amidst copius whistling/bells/cheering/horns/sirens from boats, shore, bridges and riverside dwellings- British, you bet!!
Greg
-
The choir was very good. top marks. Soaked to the skin poor souls.

Oh greg...........you'll be saying the William Tell overture is "the Lone Ranger" next.
"Sailors Hornpipe" matey.....NOT Blue Peter,lol {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)
-
%) Only place I'd heard it before! :embarrassed:
-
At 7 50pm it is still being shown on sky news interviews with some of the different people on the boats. sad it rained
Peter
-

Dave
My thoughts entirely. I would have loved more shots of the classic stuff like 102 & some of the Dunkirk little ships. Interviewing presenters was entirely pointless as far as I was concerned.
-
The Blue Peter theme is actually called 'Barnacle Bill' and was written for the show. Unashamedly based on the famous Hornpipe we heard today, but not the same.
-
. Interviewing presenters was entirely pointless as far as I was concerned.
they were when one of them called the Queen "Her Royal Highness" instead of "Her Majesty".......and the other idiot started going on about HMS Belfast weighing in at 96,000 tons.............what plonkers!! wodney
-
About 5mins in the BBC commentator described the bow capitol boards as 'lovely giltwork on the stern'......
-
Very disappointing. Thought it was all about the boats {:-{
Highlights - some of the experts comments
HMS Belfast described as 91,000 tons
Tom Cunliffe asked about the semaphore flags replied ' I haven't got a clue '
-
Tom Cunliffe asked about the semaphore flags replied ' I haven't got a clue '
Well, why on earth should he - he's a yachtsman and yachtsmen don't use use semaphore!
Colin
-
Did anyoneone see the new RNLI lifeboat, Golden Jubillee, on BBC? I didn't. Too much inter-presenter chat and insufficient coverage of the wonderful amada IMO
-
Very disappointing. Thought it was all about the boats {:-{
Oh no, didn't you know, it was all about how many babies had been born today at St.Tom's!!!!!!
-
Did anyoneone see the new RNLI lifeboat, Golden Jubillee, on BBC?
Do you mean Diamond Jubilee, the new Tamar class Eastbourne lifeboat? There were some closeups at the end of the BBC coverage.
Colin
-
Sorry saw this post after the other one.
Was HMS york there? My dad thinks he saw it
-
And why did we have to have a cookery demo >:-o. It doesn't bode well for the olympics they'll be more presenters than athletes.
I like Tom Cunliffe and felt he tried to focus on the boats and describe the differences and uses but kept being interrupted by changing cameras and inane talk.
Was it just me or did the Queen look incredibly bored?
Dave
-
on a positive note...boy could that skipper handle the royal brick.........it helped having bow AND stern thrusters......but a great job indeed.
neil.
-
I think it would have been so much better had it been made in B & W with commentary by Raymond Baxter....just my opinion !
-
A Clyde Puffer would have been nice but I expect the long trip would have interfered with the VIC32's annual maintenance and the VIC56 is looking a bit the worse for wear these days.
Mike
-

Yes that was quite impressive.
The skipper aboard 'Symphony' also did a cracking job spinning the Royal Philharmonic orchestra's boat on a sixpence,
right in front to the Royal barge.
Good job sir! :-))
-
I would have like to seen more of the Thames Tugs, barges, lighter etc.....
-
For the first time the BEEB's coverage of a major national event was an absolute disaster, most of the presenter were celeb driven and totally ignorant of the subject the queen and the boats. I wish I'd watched it on Sky News as they seemed to have covered it much better.
-

Mike
P.S. Waverley would have been good to see, no stranger to the Thames.
-

Mike
There were two in attendance; VIC56 and VIC96.
Greg
-
P.S. Waverley would have been good to see, no stranger to the Thames.
Could she have actually managed to keep to 4 knots though.......she's like a b***** race horse where ever she goes...........don't think I've ever seen her do less than her full wack when on the Clyde, {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)
-
Yep she is a long legged lady. Didnt see the two puffers in parade, were they just moored ?
-
Greg
Thanks for the picture of the VIC56 and VIC96 - what a pity they weren't featured on tele!
Good to see the VIC56 spruced up. I looked for the VIC96 last time I went to Chatham but she didn't appear to be there at the time.
Ian
I agree, the Waverley should have been there but she might have stolen the show!
Mike
-
In OZ....we had 60 minutes of the pageant on our ABC television last night......I thought it was spectacular...... :-)) ...Derek

I imagine that Waverly didn't attend because she would have been restricted by her air draught so she would have been in the avenue of sail (read static exhibit not open to the public for the duration), which is a pretty pointless end to what would have been a long and expensive sea trip with fuel, pilotage, mooring and MCA scrutineering etc.
I imagine it is because of their air draught that the VIC's didn't take part in the 'procession', and hence their lack of TV coverage- criminal really as the majority of the really 'historic' boats were in the static 'avenue of sail' moored downstream of Tower Bridge- why theu couldn't have been moored upstream and have the full procession go by them and have the Queen see them all and have the TV coverage/publicity that would go with moving them not more than 1/2 mile I really couldn't work out.
Greg
-
Greg
I take your point about the air draught of the Waverley and VICs and totally agree with your comment about the 'avenue of sail'. There was a long preamble before the pageant started which could have been used to present these ships to the viewing public.
Your picture of the VICs shows them within a stone's throw of H.M.S. Belfast - they could easily have been featured. Presumably the BBC didn't realize their significance.
Mike
-
Just watched the Press preview on sky and it came up that the BBC got a right slating in one of the papers (it might have been the Guardian) for ill informed coverage.
Peter
-
Here in South Africa the SABC were supposed to have screened the event from 15:00 to 19:00 (SA time), but due to the fact that they couldn't manage to get the commentary link, they took it off the air at 17:30, much to my disappointment. Judging from the above comments, however, perhaps it was a mixed blessing that we didn't have the commentary! Nevertheless, it was a spectacular sight and I thoroughly enjoyed the time we did get to view it. Glyn.
-
Almost certain to be clips on Youtube, maybe some by owners or people with an interest in particular vessels. Poor old Dooky Embrah got a waterworks problem by standing for hours in the cold, he is in drydock to escape the pop concerts etc.
-
"Dooky Embrah" ??
-
OK then Phil the Greek
-
Ah!
Where does "Dooky Embrah" come from.... or shouldn't i ask?!

Anyone see this?

I love the faces of the guys rowing the Whitby Pulling and Sailing Lifeboat William Riley of Leamington. the guy's face on the right says it all.......god love him. %% %%

Absolutely right, Derek. I didn't see one presenter, and there were lots of shots of boats. I don't know who the ABC got its feed from, but it was first class...and no ads either, in true ABC style :-))
Peter.

I see the BBC announced 2,400 official complaints about the coverage <*<

From a total of how many viewers?
Peter.
-
From a total of how many viewers?
10 Million
-
It would seem that the VAST majority of viewers were happy with the BBC coverage, me included.
As the late, great Australian Rugby League coach, Jack Gibson once said, "Some people would boo Santa Claus".
Peter.
-
2400 complaints is a HUGE amount for one program that contained no swearing/violence/sex, was educational and inoffensive, and you have to remember that for every one who complains they assume there is something like 100 that haven't complained to get a closer idea of true feeling.
I know I haven't spoken to anyone who watched ho hasn't said what has been said here already.
Greg

Here is part of the reply i had from the BBC.
“It was our intention to go live onto more of the individual boats taking part in the Pageant but unfortunately this was hampered by some difficult circumstances on the day. We will be looking back at the coverage as a whole to assess the overall factual content and tone right across the broadcast. We will look carefully at any lessons that need to be learnt from this and re-invest these constructively into our future live events output.
We are very grateful for your feedback in helping us do this.”
Dave
-
The old cliché "We will look carefully at any lessons that need to be learnt from this and re-invest these constructively into our future..." blah, blah, blah..... Give ourselves a pay rise!
-
or use the old get out clause
"You can't please all of the people all of the time"
-
Don't hold your breath, they've got a chance to screw up two and a half hours of trooping the colour this weekend. O0 >>:-(
Regards Ian.
-
If you guys thought that the BBC's TV coverage was rubbish you should have heard BBC Radio 2...................would you believe they appointed Graham Norton to the task, ensconsed in the River Room of the National Theatre with a succession of completely uninformed and uninformative guests. I recall the highlight being "Ooo look - there's some boats coming past the window now".
We pay them for this? Come back, Tom Fleming.
DM
-
I wouldn't go to the end of the street to listen to Graham Norton.......can't stand him, his humour or his monotonous voice.........would rather watch grass grow and listen to the birds sing than one minute of the cretin. >>:-(
-
I am so glad that the BBC have admitted there are lessons to be learned from their amatuer coverage of the Thames River Pageant.
Hopefully these will be put in place the next time Britain has a Diamond Jubilee.
It was not as bad as the BBC coverage of the 1937 Spithead Review, in which Thomas Woodroofe famously just kept repeating "The Fleet's lit up (hic!)" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WpiTa7azQs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WpiTa7azQs)
-
Two Woodruff things here.... :D.
1. A good reason why he was never promoted to Rear Admiral
2. Thank goodness his great great grandfather had 1/2 a brain & invented a key..... {-) O0

Totally agree Neil. Sadly though, when he was the subject of "Who do you think you are", I find that due to ancestoral connections with the Sheffield branch, I may be related to him. :embarrassed:
Regards Ian.

Probably against his spouse

Watched this on the Tivo box when I got home after the weekend and was thoroughly smegged off that they focussed on the handdriven craft and there was virtually nothing on the live broadcast about the older boats. Plenty on the river boats, the passenger boats but b' all about the vintage boats.
Given the ineptitude of the directors and the appalling weather - some thoughts
The Royal Barge - looked like something over-priced and tacky from Harrods, though spare a thought for the guys who built the throne, which HRH and consort completely ignored.
The Gloriana - one of the sexiest rowing boats I have ever seen, beautiful, evoking the majesty of past times.
Boat handling skills, top marks for the Royal barge and the Philharmonic barge.
The boys and girls on the upper deck belting out appropriate songs ion filthy weather- deserve a medal.
The Chooky Embra was sae "xxxxx" off he threw a sickie for the rest of the weekend.
-
The boys and girls on the upper deck belting out appropriate songs ion filthy weather- deserve a meal.
Coronation Chicken Sandwiches ?
-
The changing of the guard / trooping the colour is on TV in the background, the BBC presenters strangely seem FUll of facts today!!!
-
And not a queen Graham in sight either !

Sorry, missed your posting Neil, it was early, before they all started to form up. One of the Beeb boats was doing a news cruise mixed in with the "Brealfast" news. Hope you got the Numpty on Guernsey sorted???
Regards Ian.
-
The flashback to many of the previous years was fascinating! :-)) :-))
-
Made a better fist of this one, but having said that, they've been having a go every twelve months for the last sixty years.
Regards Ian.

Sky had a red button no commentary option. Was sorely tempted but Edwards didn't let the side down. Glad to see Prince Philip with Her Maj but noted he was looking a bit worse for wear.

Hello
I remember an image of the RY Britannia entering Malta followed by a Royal Navy destroyer squadron it was quite sad to see this peplum movie style transformed river tourist boat followed by plastic tented flying the commonwealth flag ... Poor Great Britain

The precision that these guys execute the parade is amazing, and the music? need I say more. Hopefully, the massed pipes and drums will put in an apearence, or is that only when the Scots Regiments are on... :-)) :-)) :-))

Thanks pettyofficernick, I wanted to record that flashback bit. :-))
