Let’s hope Gary can get his pictures on board - mine are blurred (due to a slow shutter speed. That’s my excuse anyway!). In the meantime I’m posting some of mine in the hope that they reveal the atmosphere of the occasion.

The first pic is of the queue to get on the catarmaran - getting cold and very wet.

Fortunately the rain then eased off and finally stopped.

Our trip ended before the Queen Elizabeth left. (She was going to have to turn on setting off.)

It was a great experience. We got home at 1 a.m.!

Peter

Thanks for your words of encouragement! Hopefully Gary will be able to resize his pics. It was certainly a memorable occasion, with much joining in to the strains of "Land of Hope and Glory" and "Rule Britannia" coming from the liners. What a blessing the "vertical mist" disappeared (and my feet had thawed out by the time we got home!).

Like many others on this forum who live far from Southampton, I am grateful to see your pictures.  Thank you.

Just an aside, really: how do you make out the ships' Navigation Lights amidst all that glare?

Geoff.....you don't.
Going into somewhere like Singapore or Hong Kong (or even Southampton) the guy on the bridge of an approaching ship can't really see the nav lights of a ship coming down a channel towards him. Al he knows is that if he keeps "his" ship within the limits of the "right hand lane" of the channel and trusts the driver of the approaching ship to do the same then he should be OK.
Of course, radar helps...but nothing is really better than the Mk.1 eyeball in these situations. BY.

I think that, in the case of my pictures, the glare is amplified by the slow shutter speed - the camera decides that it's dark so arranges a long exposure, which means that light from cabins etc. gets over-exposed. (In fact the one titled "Queen Victoria just leaving her berth" - 4th up from the bottom clearly shows her starboard nav. light.)

I tried to take one of the Harbour Master's vessel dashing around which was clearly visible to the naked eye but it appears almost black.

I thought afterwards, I might have fared better with video footage - but we'll never know!
