Some years ago i stupidly sold a much loved model of a Loyal Class Fleet Tender which I'd bought already build from a fellow boat builder. From the moment I helped load it into the man's car i instantly regreted selling her <:(
Luckily I managed to buy a new kit from Model Slipway (2nd to last one!) a year and a half ago and the following pictures are my attempt at a worthy replacement to the one I once owned...
-
Rather crude jig made up for white metal soldering the liferaft supports. Some extra life raft containers I vac-formed as I'd made a poor job of building the included kit versions.
-
Started making some scratchbuilt wheelhouse instruments. Ships rowboat taking shape and starting to look the part though more details still to add.
-
Satin finish sealer applied to seal the vinyl applied transfers.
-
Wheelhouse construction underway....
-
I had the exhaust funnel made out of fibreglass and done away with the kit supplied vac-formed funnel. I plan on installing a heated smoke unit so thought the idea of a fibreglass funnel made more sense!
-
Light dusting of grey primer applied.
-
Test fitting and checking for adjustments.
-
Other side of wheelhouse.
-
Rear upper deck with built liferaft containers being test fitted.
-
Thats a very nice looking boat keep up the excellent work
Dave
-
Thanks Dave. I hope to post more pictures when I get more time :-)
-
I'm looking forward to seeing much more of your build O0
Dave
-
Thanks Dave. I've done a fair bit more than when these were taken so hope to take some more pictures over the weekend if the rain holds off :-) And hopefully on a better quality camera too!
-
Built a light up working radar monitor with a transparency slide graphic. I was all set to fit until I was given some detailed pictures of a Loyal wheelhouse which doesn't have this style of radar monitor...oh well! Isn't it always the case though, you search and search for reference material and find nothing, then as you've gone with what you think should be in there you end up finding (or being given in my case) some super detailed photographic images and start ripping the model to pieces again!
-
Here's the semi finished rowboat tied down with waterproof cover folded back. I've added a few things like rope and bucket to make things look a little more interesting.
-
And from the opposite side.
-
Front hatch completed.
-
More sections completed (although not completely happy with the colour of the orange/red so plan on repainting)
-
Incredibly neat work, well done sir! :-))
-
Beautiful crisp clean work. Excellent. Are you going to be weathering this one?
John
-
Very impressive job you are doing there Voyager. I'm enjoying 'seeing how it's done' properly.
More details please.

Hi Voyager,
I think your new build of LOYAL MODERATOR is a more than adequate replacement for her sold ancestor.
I am absolutely convinced that your rebuild will be miles better when once finished then the regretted loss.
So no time for regrets anymore. :-))
-
Hi Wayne, doing your usual excellent job, its looking great.
Glad you are back, have missed your builds. :-))
-

John
Thanks John. Only very subtle weathering, mostly on the winch and anchors but she's staying mostly shipyard fresh.

It's looking that way so far fingers crossed. At last my tormented mind can take a well earned rest :-)
-
Thanks DickyD, Tug Kenny, and Martin :-)
I'm especially chuffed with the waterproof boat cover. First time i've ever tried working with this soft plastasine type material (It's a form of plastasine that is a two part mix which doesn't shrink as it hardens). The portholes were from the 'RB' fittings range with resin bolts glued on. The boat oars were from BBQ sticks stained and gloss varnished. The authentic looking rope was from 'Miskin' models.
-
Here's a pic I found of my old Loyal Class Tender that I regretfully sold.
-
That's a nice boat you had there. I really liked your cover - any chance of a link to the product please?
Dave

{-) thanks Martin but I only meant the plasticine type stuff for the cover.
Oops! sorry! :embarrassed: - Martin

The product is called 'Green Stuff' which is available from this company

A selection of built and painted fittings (lightly weathered)
-
And another in primer form awaiting final colour.
-
Latest snaps display :-)) .....they are so crisp in detail Voyager.....brilliant..... O0.....Derek
-
Thanks Derek from Australia :-)
-
Thinking about it; I like your half uncovered row boat set so much I'd be happy to have it as a little diorama.
Reminds me of an old TV program title 'Small Objects of Desire' I can't remember any program content - sounds like collectables.
Dave
-
Don't remember that program??? Was in two minds about having the boat fully covered, pleased now I went with only haf covering :-) If you get stuck finding a rowboat give me a nod and I'll have a look around in my workshop!
-
Some more progress...
-
She is coming along well, you do make a very "crisp" model.
She is looking very good.
Bob
-
Thanks Bob. I've had my fair share of things going wrong, problems with varnishes etc... Having overcome all that I'm pleased with how the build is going. I take great care in getting things to fit smoothly with all the corners filled with styrene filler and sanded smooth. I airbrush as much as possible, although I do give in to spray cans from time to time.
-
Just a pity she is in grey and black as was in the RMAS (Buff and Black) for 30 yrs!!!
Bob
-
More lockers etc now fitted as well as a glimps to how the interior is coming along. The Newspaper reads 'Freddy Starr Ate My Hampster' {-) {-) {-)
-
Front anchor winch finished. Only a few fittings to build and add and this section of the boat will be complete.
-
Fantastic level of detailing!
Of course, as a German I am not familiar with the reading habits of the RNXS sailors.
So I had to look up the Starr Hamster Story and was amazed to find it also covered in Freddie Starr's Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Starr).
A considerable amount of his fame must stem from this story.
I wonder if "I ate that hamster" was a kind of a running gag in the Royal Navy referring to the humble culinary skills of the cabooses on board her Majesty's ships?
Did you reduce a copy of the original SUN issue?
-
A good friend of mine did me the miniature copy of The Sun, not sure how he did it though? He also worked on my waterslide custom decals and ocean maps.
Last night and this morning I made up the three watertight doors (Sprayed with Tamiya Fine Primer Grey)
-
Hi there, your loyal is looking fantastic, I too have a similar regret to yours, I was asked by a guy that I used to work with when I was on the railways to build one for him as he had purchased the kit and was a little daunted by it, he thought I could do a better job than him, I wasn't so sure but agreed anyway!!! (got renumerated pretty well for it)....As it went the build was superb, a real pleasure and something to be proud of. It was my only build since the lesro thing I built some years previous and now I'm on the build again with my 43ft RSL (back to wood again).....I will return to grp and plastic again one day once my present model is finished (ish!!!). I would love to build a loyal again but it seems to have disappeared from radar screen.....maybe Lawrie (the ever so helpful man at the model slipway) will re-introduce it again sometime soon (hint hint!!!!!)
-
I was lucky, I managed to buy the second to last one from them...phew :-)
Here's a selection of waterslide transfers a good friend of mine did for me to go on my Loyal Class tender....
-
These decals are awesome!
(I know that "decal" probably is the wrong term but I lack the correct English vocabulary. Are they of the type you need to rub on the surface with a e.g. pen or blunt piece of metal?)
(edit: ah sorry, just reread your caption to the images in your post where you wrote "waterslide", then decal is maybe correct.)
What would your friend require as a master piece to produce them?

If you have an inkjet printer, and some matt varnish you can make your own very easily
The paper price is very reasonable too

If you dont fancy doing them yourself drop me a PM and I can probably knock you off a few

Wouldn't mind a set of them myself to finish off my boat nicely..... looks like you and friend are in business!! :-))
-
Window shutters made (All 7 of them) and two tone painted. Rope ladder also in the making.
-
Some scratch built wheelhouse electronics awaitiing installation (another words to be glued in place {-) )
-
Some random close-up details....
-
That's spectacularly good finish to that hull. :o

Cheers martin :-) It almost looks as though it's been done in Photo-Shop lol (which it hasn't by the way for anyone now wondering!)
-
I have been adding some wheelhouse details to help make things look a bit more realistic. My friend made a wall clock graphic (I made the clock frame from scrap plasti-card. He also made a wall calendar with the year 1975 (the year I was born). Pictured are some other electronic fittings under construction. To the left you can just make out a head rest of a seat.
-
... and twice a day you can say it's showing the correct time O0
Nice detailing.
Dave
-
How very true lol. Not exactly Rolex precision %%
-
This is a superb build.
I have just acquired an unbuilt kit and was going to
Do it as RMAS Cricklade.
So will be watching with interest might even have to steal a few ideas :-)) %) %)

Thanks for the kind words :-) I have plenty of reference pics if you should need them?

You can cancel Specsavers then, but do you know who built Loyal Moderator?
Dave
-
Lol yeah i'll cancel my eye test then ;D
No idea who built her, NO!!! There must some info out there on the web?
-
What a Great build !
You subtle weathering teqnique is an inspiration.
So unfortunate Model Slipways has stopped the production of this outstanding model.
