I'm looking into what material to use for sailcloth for my 6M ? hull. The Egyptian Cotton on Keith Jewell's website looks OK but has any member used it on a sailing model ?
Would shrinkage be a problem ?

I'm a big fan of DuPont Supplex. It's strong, light, UV resistant, and being a synthetic cuts with a hotknife which seals the edges. Holes for reef points, etc, I make with a soldering iron point.

The only sewing I've done on my sails are the bolt-ropes. Seams are drawn on and patches, tabling, cloths, etc are all glued on.

I've heard of this stuff on here before but I'm not sure what it might be called, or even if it's available, here in the U of K.

Thanks to Jerry Todd for your information on Supplex, it sounds ideal and certainly looks great on your models,
but I've been unable to find a UK supplier.
Never mind, the ship models look absolutely fantastic, a great credit to you.
Re your mention of the Warrior, if it's the same one my, great grandad was signalman aboard her in 1875.

DaveThanks to Dave and RMaddock for your response and I will continue to look for this material, but is there nobody on this whole site who has used Egyptian Cotton ?

I used a cotton sheet for my "Traditional Sail Yacht" Annalie from John Lewis. I was after some down proof cambric which has been recommended on several traditional pond yacht sites but could not find any. My sheet was 800 threads per inch and seems to work well. I have tried to fill in the gaps between the threads with a silicon camping waterproof spray but it is difficult to determine the effect, either way.
Does anyone know how to treat cotton cloth to fill in the poors as modern plastic sails would look out of place.
