Press Release from the Hop Farm :-

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: SOUTHERN MODEL AIRSHOW

The Southern Model Airshow which was due to take place at The Hop Farm on 15-16 September is now cancelled. The organisers withdrew the event due to safety concerns.

Please note, all tickets booked through The Hop Farm have been refunded and will take 3 to 5 working days for the money to return to your bank account (depending on your branch).

Oh no! I was looking forward to that. What was the reason for cancelling?

From the organising club

Quote
Southern Model Airshow 2012 - Cancelled

Croydon Airport Model Flying Club with great regret has to announce that the annual Southern Model Air Show will not be going ahead as planned on the 15/16 September 2012.

The Hop Farm, where the event was due to be held, have recently booked another event (Circo Loco music festival) for Saturday 15 September to take place in the adjoining field which would result in our aircraft over flying that event. This event is expected to attract some 5000+ people.

Over the past four days we have been working with the Hop Farm to try and reach agreement on ways of continuing with SMAS.

We have been in contact with the BMFA who informed us that on this basis they would not be able to issue a letter confirming extended BMFA insurance to cover our event as compliance to basic provision of CAP 658 would not be possible.

Croydon Airport Model Flying Club takes the view that safety is of paramount importance and it is with this in mind that this decision has been reluctantly taken.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has supported us.

CAMFC Committee

CAP658 of the ANO by the way, gives safety distances and overflight restrictions for airshows and displays by small aircraft.

Hi,

Apparently the Circo Loco  music festival was due to be staged in Central London on an artificial beach on the Thames. The beach was supposed to have been constructed as part of the Olympics, but wasn't completed.

The music organisers had advertised the show to take place in London and sold tickets to that effect. The venue was changed on the 28 / 29th August to the Hop Farm in Kent and since then a lot of music people are demanding their money back, since the journey is so difficult - there was one statement suggesting that the Hop Farm was accessible via the Tube!

A beach is to be built at the Hop Farm including palm trees!

See

I hope it pours with rain with thunder and lightning etc. etc.

I am in total agreement with you all, but sadly we as littler people MAKE NOT ONE JOT OF DIFFERENCE to these sorts of people........it's like myself boycotting a garage because it won't reduce it's prices on fuel.......one makes no difference.......it's not until averyone boycotts the same that the company will listen, because then it hurts.

However I went there for a day last april when down in Kent, and probably spent a ton on this and that in the park...........I won't go again!!!

Living in the area 2 alternative sites come to mind.

The Kent County showground at Detling

The deep valley at the southern part of Mote Park in Maidstone which was the old showground in the 60s

The Detling showground has huge areas where flying must be possible, much more space than the Hop farm.

Mote Park could have planes and boats about 1/2 mile apart in their own elements.

Just a suggestion!!

I'm not sure Detling would work as i believe it's a holding stack / flightpath for Gatwick - http://ivao.co.uk/atc/ltcc/se . ATC's not my thing so i may be wrong,  I drive past it everyday ( or sit in traffic on the hill ) on the way to work and the thought of yet another trip, even once a year would be very depressing  :((

How about Brands Hatch -easy access  when there's no racing on .
West Malling would have been good except it's now a housing estate and golf club.
Groombridge Place has a fair bit of room (have to keep the birds of prey indoors though).
Hever Castle - now that would be very handy for me   :}
There was an old airfield at Penshurst - not sure what happened to that.
But at the end of the day it was working very well at the Hope Farm, let's hope this is just a one off and some lessons are learnt from it.

It is so easy to criticise others for having to cancel a show etc,but what I can never fathon out is the ones who criticise etc do they ever put on a show I THINK NOT.

Lads and lasses it is SO SO easy to suggest venues etc sorry to say this and if it is taken wrongly then so be it

If you are so handy in suggesting a venue, suggesting that the show is Boycotted etc THEN ORGANISE A SHOW AND LETS SEE HOW GOOD IT IS

I would place a bet it wouldn't happen,

Dave. I can see your point of view. But what about all the traders etc who have been let down? What about the hard work of Chantry in sending tickets Etc? What is being suggested is that a trustworthy venue be used next year by the same organisers. Hopefully one can be found. Yes i admit i would not want to organise a meeting, ive no idea how to start. Theres a saying once bitten twice shy. John.

Paul.

As far as I'm aware not one single person has criticised the organisers,they do a superb job and their hard work is obviously appreciated by the number of visitors that the show attracts every year,the problem was generated by The Hop Farm booking another event to run concurrently thereby making the model show uninsurable ( as can be read in post 8 ).  {:-{

They didn't 'boot off and kick in the teeth' anyone, (any more than Stavros' suggestion makes any sense either %)), what happened was the SAMS organising club was advised by the BMFA that they would be unable to extend the club liability insurance event due to having to overfly the 'other field', which if any of you had been bothered to ask - meant the club would have been liable.

As in many other threads like this - too many people stick both of their feet in their mouths and get 99% of the story wrong - the solution??  READ AND UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM!! not just the title of the topic :((

Due to the Hop farm show cancellation Elmbridge MC http://www.elmbridgemc.net/index.php/boat-section
would like to offer it's boating lake ( no flying, sorry ) for the 15-16th Sept.
If there is interest in this as a replacement venue I'll add more information.

Imagining what the Hop Farm people might have thought (without bothering to check any details  %% %% ), what I guess might have happened is that the Hop Farm people didn't initially realise that the event needed the next field to be free of people, and then when they were told, pointed out that in that case the event would be using up TWO of their venues, but for only one charge...

Hi everyone,
Myself and Debbie know how hard its is on you all.
Trust me its very hard on us.
A lot of work goes into let you all you people know when the show is.
Sending out ticket etc.
Then only to have to let you all know its off.
We are already looking for somewere new for next year.
We went to the Essex Country Show,Barleylands at the weekend.
No boat traders but a very good show.
Lots to see and do.

the reason for that was in the local paper the week before. in an interview the new owner of the hopfarm was quoted as saying he wants the hopfarm to be the number one venue for music events in the south east. therefore music comes first established family shows do not count.

Ian. No doubt you are aware that all venues have to conform to noise limits. Should the venue music at the Hop farm be to loud. Then a complaint to the local councils noise abatement officer would be in order. One to watch. John

Hi all,

I don't know if this is the rigth place to post this, as it's slightly off topic.
I've seen from the Southern Model Airshow Website that they plan to be back in 2013 "bigger & Better"!
The dates of 14th & 15th of September 2013 are suggested, but these dates clash with the Essex Country Show at Barleylands Farm.
I know that many of the local model boat clubs like to attend both these events & can't be in two places at once!
Since the Southern Model Airshow is in a "transitional" stage at the moment, perhaps this clash can still be avoided.

Neil.

sorry i think that needs an explanation
I think he means that since the site owners chopped the last show at short notice (reading the earlier posts), they might need to do some very persuasive persuading to get the show organisers to risk a second fiasco.  Then again, if potential exhibitors, traders and visitors had their arrangements messed about with, they might not want to be bitten again.
