Title: discuss your fleet :)
Post by: Ghost in the shell on May 08, 2006, 07:40:50 pm
owning several boats, i was wandering what everyone else has, and any particular favourite model you may have and why, or if you have a boat with problems, whar are the problems and did you solve them?

My main 4 boats are currently in my gallery in the main mayhem page, though right now espirit d'atlantique has steering issues, i think one of the rudders needs tightenning up, lets hope this is the case.  apart from that, I rate Celestia and Gemini, the two nuclear boats are my personal favourites, partucularly Celestia, which is based on the Sydney Star.

Having 3... one RTF Wyeforce, RTF Sail and still under construction a West Highland Coaster.

Boats i like to have:

Northlight (http://www.modelspot.com/cc/north.jpg) (66ft coaster)
Sealight (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/Builds/Puffer_Jan/Puffer_pictures/images/P1015014.JPG) (88ft coaster)
Admirality Coaster (http://www.mountfleetmodels.co.uk/admiralty-coaster/pic2.jpg)
"HMS Resolve" and the "Imara".

I like old steamships, thats why these are my favourites.

Problems "Wyeforce":

-bad manouverability
-very loud gearbox

I have a Tyne Class Lifeboat from the MB vac formed hull at 1-20, a mostly finshed 1-20 scale Mersey Class built from scratch. I also have a hull for a Severn at 1-25, but that only has the deck and running gear in at the moment. I haven't sailed for quite some time though, due to work commitments, but theres always hope..! :)
When (If!) I ever finish the 2 of them, I would love to build the Slipway Trent, or maybe even Speedlines 'mini' Severn if it comes into production. As you can probably tell, I like my lifeboats! Unfortunately at 1-12 they are a bit large, hence the reason I have them at a smaller scale. I suppose I need a bigger house..!!!

yep, i have the same boat from graupner, and steering, forget it! it trakes about 18 feet to swing round.  gearbox shine is typical of all boxes.  that is why she does not see the water much!

Celestia and Gemini turn briliant, especially given that Celestia is nearly 4ft long!

I have turned into a lifeboat nut, and contrary to popular opinion, it's not because I got a big tin of orange paint cheap and couldn't find any other orange boats ! ?My parents, both still building and sailing have joined in, so between us the boats currently available for sailing are:

1:8 ?Atlantic 21 with DO-DO launching trolley and working tractor
1:12 ?Brede from Kingston Mouldings - excellent handling boat
1:12 Rother - Metcalf Mouldings kit
1:20 Keith Nelson class ( only one ever built)
1:20 Waveney (modified Billings Coastguard)
1:20 Arun ( Metcalf Mouldings)
1:36 (app) Trent ( Moderl slipway "rescue" boat) - 2 off - one as a boat for kids to have a go with at the club
1:?? ?Severn, the one sold by the RNLI as ready to run, but stripped and fitted with proper motors and radio gear
1:40 Waveney - the small Billings one, fully radio controlled

boats on the slips are

1:20 Brede from a kit by K S Marine Models
1:20 Medina - semi scale, built onto a modified 1:12 Atlantic hull
1:20 Severn - using a modified Model Slipway Trent hull as a starting point
1:16 Barnett - restoration job, bought as a wreck, but beautifull double diagonal planked hull
1:16 Mersey - glass mould and hull made, just waiting it's turn in the queue !

and I have two Airfix 1:72 Severns on order as soon as they are released ( latest quoted date is "June") one of which I am sure I will shoehorn some radio gear into ?::) ?I would love to get it light enough so that I could hang a lump of ballast below the hull to counterbalance a 1:72 sea King hovering above it on piano wire ?:o

Cheers

Aston

ps long term project is a 1:72 Fearless ?:o

Oh dear, lots of models around.....
My "Homefleet" is:

HMS Lord Nelson, scratchbuilt scale 1:100
HMS Mohawk, modified kit scale 1:96
HMS P-49, scratchbuilt scale 1:100
HMS Velox, scratchbuilt scale 1:100
SS Herman Fritzen, Turretdeck Merchantman, scratchbuilt scale 1:100
Nils Holgerson, small sailing Yacht scale 1:25
70`CMB103MT, scratchbuilt scale 1:24

My favourite boat at the moment is the 70`CMB, but mostly I go the pond with my P-Class Patrol boat. I like the appearance of that narrow boat which runs well and dry!

Under construction:
Sir Lancelot, scale 1:32 Kit

... and thousand others in my mind, but not enough time and money to get them all done........

;D Hi Daryl, your list of coming up models is incomplete.....  ;D
Title: Re: discuss your fleet :)
Post by: Daryl on May 09, 2006, 12:04:30 pm
I left out the P-class as Sam does not know about it yet, he is building the PBM pilot boat and I am restoring a US heavy crusier which I left off as well as trying to get to grips with the Tug and Yamato. When He see's it he will want to start as soona s he finished whatever he is building, the pilot boat should be finished by July so I guess he will start the P-boat then.

The other stuff we have 'on the slips' are
1/24 Thames sailing barge
1/24 Vosper MTB
1 foot fishing boat
Astec Falcon to be re-built after a fire on board
FE outrigger awaiting motor, esc and setting up
Boston Blenheim
USS Enterprise 1/350
P class WW1 patrol boat ( in hiding until Sam's birthday)
Caldercraft Clyde Puffer (Sam's kit last Christmas)
1/350 Bismarck
USS America and Admiral Kuznetsov both 1/700 this is a challenge to get them r/c and floating the right way up
HMS Cumberland Type 22 batch 3 awaiting a photo survay when we get to Devonport in August

As you can see not a bad list to build, but then again there is two of us now building them. Wife now askes questions whenever we think about something new, guess its time to stop buying and build for a while.

12m yacht, 1/12th, needs some TLC and r/c gear needs checking

Zwart Zee tug (Billings kit), rather sad now (never been floated), never fitted with r/c

Also...

I missed this thread through being on holiday until I saw todays postings - so here's my fleet.

Scale sailing model of a Westerly Pentland ketch (48 inches overall) - scratch built as a reminder of the full size I owned a few years back.( Featured as "Picture of the Month" on Mayhem)

Mersey class lifeboat on a Metcalf hull  (38 inches) - built as the Pwllheli lifeboat as thats housed next to where I moored my Pentland.

Type 23 frigate on the  Fleetscale hull  (55 inches) - built as HMS Portland  as my grandson is a crew member on that ship

Graupner Pegasus - built from a second hand kit for another grandson - it still lives with me for when he visits - but I have to keep it in sailing trim now and again.   ;)

Airboat - scratch built "Everglades"  type of airboat - built as an experiment to see if it would work - it does - very well  !

Griffon Hovercraft (43 inch long)- to try something different.

Marblehead sailing yacht - I was loaned the moulds for a Marblehead so moulded three hulls for self and two friends - kept one - super sailing boat.

RNLI Hovercraft - scratch built using the experience gained on the Griffon.

"Northsider"  tug. (49 inches)   -   Built from a semi kit from Tyne models - .
Bought as an early  birthday present from my wife at the Northwich show, it was finished  enough to launch on my birthday a couple of weeks ago. My club friends demanded a a bottle of champagne for the lakeside launching lunch. I had a bottle which had been in the cupboard for 18 years (didnt like it when bought) and amazingly it was still very drinkable - best launching ceremony yet - shame you missed it Stavros  :D

My favorites are WII warships, but they have to be 1/72 airfix etc kits, which is why i have
1) Matchbox flower class corvette
2) Airfix German 'S' Boat

Both remote controlled though being a part time hobbiest, they just go refit most of the time or get stored.

Have kits for the slipway but no time to start / complete

Revel PT109
Airfix vosper (well two actually)

other models for fitting to the dream boat to build, Hermes, are three harrier jump jets with marker lights (alternating flashing led's), and two sea kings a MK2 and a MK4 commando both with flashing marker lights and rotating main rotors (tail is very difficult to acheive with the space in a 1/72 scale chopper).

At the moment, the fleet comprises:

Ripmax Carlson
Ripmax Interceptor 650   (These 2 are for the kids, although  do spend a lot of time sailing them!)

I have a scratch-built River Class minesweeper at 1:48th

Building:
Vickers Vedette from (1976 freebie plan)
1:72 scale Tarawa class assault ship. (scratch-built and scaled up from Revell plastic kit)

Loads more in the pipeline, but trying to get around to starting them.

Was given a fiberglass hull which sort-of fitted the plan.
I'm slightly modifying the design to look a little more modern and using the sketches in the magazine article, i've added a helicopter and changed the weapons.

Initial bath tests are good (hasn't sunk yet!), hopefully on the water trials will be as good.

Also inherited an AsTec Falcon fast electric.  something to do during the winter months.

well funny you should mention that, today, 7 days after the sinking, Celestia slid back down the slipway and back where she belongs, ON the water not UNDER it :) cruising the lake, Celestia was back on form, :)

I removed everything from the insides so my nipper could play with it in the pool but i forgot to replace the bungs where the rudders were ::) ::)
to be fair it took on loads of water and still was bobbing about in the pool showed no sign of sinking fully ;D

I have built 6 models, shown below.
In order of construction,
Amsterdam, an Artesania Latina kit.
James Cook, a freelance pilot vessel designed by Richard Webb, from a free plan in MMI, and subsequently given to one of my grandsons in Sydney.
Henry Rous, another pilot vessel with the same heritage which I kept.
Sentinel, a Model Slipway kit.
Jessica Louise, a freelance Norfolk Broads cruiser, designed by Ray Wood as Margoletta, a free plan with Model Boats,
and lastly, another Richard Webb design, SHB Triton, also a free plan with Model Boats.
All of the scratch built models were enlarged from the original plans to about 76cm, and built in ply rather than styrene.
Peter.

I am amazed how many people have so much room to store so many models.  "Never in the field of modelmaking have so many been stored by so few....."
I have just sold two models (Is this anathema?) and used the resultant funds to purchase the Mountfleet Bangarth Kit which will be my winter project (If I can wait until then).

1:16 Mersey - glass mould and hull made, just waiting it's turn in the queue !

and I have two Airfix 1:72 Severns on order as soon as they are released ( latest quoted date is "June") one of which I am sure I will shoehorn some radio gear into ?::) ?I would love to get it light enough so that I could hang a lump of ballast below the hull to counterbalance a 1:72 sea King hovering above it on piano wire ? :o

Cheers

Aston

ps long term project is a 1:72 Fearless ? :o

my other boat is this 38in cabin cruiser, solidly built in the 60's using mahogony, goes a good speed and very sturdy in choppy water.

You might like to help out Mountfleet by offering your kits on loan, for them to take moulds from.
