Title: Decals

Hi All,
I am about to put decals and lining onto a boat hull, as the antifouling paint is a primer I am going to lacquer the whole hull.
Which would you suggest.
Put on decals and then apply lacquer or
Lacquer then apply decals.

I always lacquer after applying decals as it secures them down. I find it doesn't dis-figure them in any way.

Gerard,
If thay are decals as you say as in waterslide you will need to gloss the finish where you are going to put them or thay will not stick down well and you,ll get whats called silvering  then seal them and the hole hull with what ever finish you perfer matt semi or gloss.

Was looking at this myself recently, and some people recommend decal solvent and sealer, which a) make them more conformable to any imperfections in the surface, and then seal them down afterwards.

BECC decals \ transfers are self adhesive and dont need any lacquer or varnish over the top.

If you are using DIY decal or anything that is 'waterslide' ie slides off the backing paper when wet, you need a dusting of clear varnish or lacquer, preferably satin unless your model is a high gloss FG hull.

 If you are using water slide decals, definitely use a decal setting solvent after applying the decals to a gloss surface. If you don't you run a very great risk of having white areas (air bubbles) show up under the decals . Done correctly, the decals should all but disappear and look like a painted lettering, striping, whatever. Go to reply #157 in thread:

Read through the item you highlighted, very informative.The decals I am using are vynil,but those waterslide ones certainly do the job on an uneven surface.
