Title: large sail type servo

Hi all
These large sail type servos, can they be run on your standard radio equipment i.e normal receivers etc.

Typically yes, a standard receiver is fine.

In some cases to get full torque from the servo a separate power connection must be used. This is often done with some sort of Y-lead with one end going to the receiver for the control signal and the other to a battery pack to deliver the requisite current.

Hi Tony,
I've been running a hitec winch in my marblehead for years using only the 4xAA battery pack for the Rx. Probably dodgy but hasn't caused trouble yet.
In my current project though, I've got three winches and have opted for a "big" 6v Nimh battery and I'm using one of Action Mike's power supply boards to route it to the servos and Rx (via a built in BEC).
Hope that's muddied the water  {-)

A large (or even just a high torque) servo will need a good, stable power supply.  Using one will find any weak links.

I run a marblehead with a whirlwind winch which is rated at 6v.
I use 6v NiMh packs from Component Shop and can sail all day.
The difference in price of the 4.8 and 6v packs make 6v a no brainer
