I have spent the last few weeks building the wheel house of my Waveney conversion of the Billing Coastguard... I have more or less finished it... its undercoat painted and most of the detailing is done... BUT, I just noticed , whilst measuring up to make the roof, that I have made a mistake in the proportions! The side walls are a bit short... I didn't notice this, I thought they were the same as the US Coastguard boat... but they're not... they are about 9mm longer... As you can see from the pics, I'm not going for scale accuracy, more 'stand off' scale...but I was trying to get the proportions right!! If you had got this far... what would you do?

First, cuss and maybe cry.
Second, sleep on it.
Third, ask myself is it really noticeable.
Then ask, how important it is to me to get this correct, considering it is to be stand off quality.

The question to ask yourself is this.... "will it bother me when its finished?"

Despite referring to your model as stand-off scale, I'm guessing that you are not going to be happy leaving it as it is, if you already consider it to be 'wrong'. As it's your model, it's only you that needs to be satisfied with the end result.
However, apart from painting it in USCG colours instead, unless a person who is very familiar with both the 44MLB and the Waveney is looking at your cockpit, they probably wouldn't be any the wiser anyway.
Finally, what material is the cockpit made from?

UPDATE: I've just looked at a 44MLB website to understand the differences between the vessels, it doesn't seem to mention wheelhouse height, but does mention the windows being different - Might that be causing an optical illusion?. I have always gone with the thoughts that it's my boat, my build and my mistakes........if I can live with it, what business is it of anyone else, and if they can do better.........go on and show me............it's entirely up to you what you do with your boat, lash, and no one else's..........and I know what I would do after making such a nice job of it!!!!

I chose 44-020, which has the straight sides and larger side windows... but it was only when I got to the roof I realised the sides weren't quite long enough... having said that, I am getting my objectives mixed up... I started with the knowledge it wouldn't be absolutely accurate but I got a bit obsessed with the shape! I don't really want to spend the rest of my modelling life changing one model that is never going to be scale accurate anyway!!
I am trying to tell myself to finish this one and make the next model perfect!!

It looks great to me, but I realise that the builder of the model is always the ultimate critic, if it bothers you, change it, but bear in mind it looks great to us less knowledgeable on the subject :-))

Thanks for that... I might have to change it... I keep looking at it and I have a way to go on this model and a mistake like this plays havoc with my OCD %%

I'd concur with adross, The pics on the Waveney page look very similar size wise. If it were my job to do I'd leave it and move on. Only the rivet counters will make something of it.

Thanks Baloo... you're right, I could mess it up... Every one of the 22 Waveney lifeboats is different in some way or another so its damned hard to see that its wrong ... I shall leave it and move on! Decision Made!

Only you really know the answer.
If you will look at it and concentrate on the fault rectify it.
If you can just accept it leave it.
If it was me I would have to rectify it or sell the model.

I have a confession to make. When I read your original post and you mentioned the side panels being short when you were measuring up for the roof, I believed that you were talking about a difference in height. I also wonder whether some of the other contributors may have thought likewise.
However, as you still seemed unconvinced what to do, I found a side-on picture of 44-020 to see how 'serious' the difference was, and realised that you meant the side panels were short in the lateral dimension not the vertical one.
Consequently, I am going to modify my original response slightly and say, if it were my model, I would alter it, IF, all I had to do was change the side-windows for slightly longer replacements and add a matching extension to the back edge of the side-panels.

It would have been easier to say nothing, but now I think I understand what you meant, I've got to be honest and admit my opinion would be different, albeit with the proviso.
If any of the other guys check back to this thread, it will be interesting to see whether they have anything extra to add.

I would say it shouldn't be too difficult to add a section onto the rear of the wheelhouse walls and make new window frames. The proportions won't look right otherwise.

Hi... well, I took the advice you all gave me and gritted my teeth and altered the wheelhouse... I cut the windows out and extended the sides, then remade the windows... I am so glad I did it, I now feel so much happier about the model. It is still not perfectly to scale but it is much closer now. My wife has been away, so I got the roof and a few other bits done... Thanks again for all the advice.

PS It still needs some tidying up before the paint goes on.

Nice job! I'm pleased that it didn't go horribly wrong after doing such a nice job to start with, and if you're happy, that's great. I'll also be interested in seeing your model progress towards conclusion.
Just a small suggestion though, if there is another 'what would you do?' moment, how about adding a picture to avoid any misunderstandings?! ok2

p.s. Did you get the PM's with the modified images, and did they help? As I never heard back, I don't know if this new system worked properly?

For the benefit of anyone wondering what the last couple of messages are about, I've added a version of the Lee's original photo after altering it using basic Windows 'Paint, and the real-deal after his modification to the actual wheelhouse...
