Title: 1 metre boat sail winch identity and repair
Post by: blowdown on November 18, 2012, 08:56:38 pm
Can anyone identify the sail winch fitted to my 1 Metre boat and either suggest where I gan get it repaired or advise me what repair/modification I might be able to undertake with my ability to fine solder but not able to diagnose electronic problems.
Winch is in red plastic case with no ident except ATLAS written on in faded magic marker, square drive to drum, metal gears, ball bearings on shaft, small screw for rev adjust on top.
Problem is when I switched on the winch ran full travel until it almost wrecked the sheeting system. After fiddling with rev adjuster and using full bias on the transmitter sufficient control was attained to allow an afternoons racing. Subsequent stripping indicated suspect soldered joint on rev adjuster component (small unidentified three wired item just under the top cover ). After resoldering all three wires winch just oscillated rapidly on the spot. Since the winch is working well mechanically can I just eliminate the adjuster and if so what do I do with the wires? Alternatively what do I replace it with? I would prefer to have it repaired bearing in mind replacement cost in excess of £100
                                                    Cheers Blowdown  :((

This may seem like a dumb question, but in both cases did you switch on the transmitter before switching on the receiver?

The chaterring in the second case rings a bell. This is a common issues and there is a reason for this. It may not be a duff winch. I am sorry I can't remember the answer but I mention it as may save you looking for a fault that isn't there.

Hi Blowdown,

If your winch is not repairable you can get a HiTec drum winch from Howes Models www.howesmodels.co.uk (http://www.howesmodels.co.uk) for £25 plus p&p.... just clic on the boat section on their site, scroll down to servo's, then scroll down to HS 785 HB
I've been using these HiTec drum winches for years and have had no problems with them  :-))

Cheers

take a look at www.kbits.co.uk (http://www.kbits.co.uk) or www.sailsetc.org (http://www.sailsetc.org) both specialise in yacht related boats, parts and accessories. kbits also have a special link to whinch repairs. Alan

Chattering usualy means that the battery is down on power. Maybe worth a re charge then try again.

Poor battery charge, bad connection, tired wiring.  As well as an actual internal fault.  But if it has forcibly tried to wind itself through its own endstop it must have had enough power to do so, so that eliminates the power supply as a problem.

Whirlwinds are rated as 6V winches.
Ihave had that problem with a 4cell pack from one of my other yachts and now only
use 5cell packs for the whirlwind in my Marblehead.

Sailsetc don't sell winches and never done and Kbits only repair RMG Winches most of the others they sell cost as much to repair than to replace.
