Just started a new project.

Wrong photo

The full size steam boat looks like the work of Rappahannock Boat Works in Virginia. The boat is the Holly Lyn commissioned and owned by Earle Jones. She is a beautiful boat.
Ronnie Baird and his wife, the owners of Pappahannock Boat works, also own Tiny Power. Very nice model engines. Here's a link.

Thats the one I purchased the tracings from Ronnie and after a few adjustments I'm happy with the progress to date.

Mark,
If it turns out anything like the quality on the one sitting next to it on your first pic, it will be a cracker.
What power plant are you going to use?
George.
-
Thanks George ;) will use the Isis twin oscillator from Cheddar models I picked up the castings a short while back and have been looking for a project to build.
the Cmb 1H.
-
Sorry trying to text on the phone not my strong point %% .
I will also be using a Cheddar boiler.
-
Just started to add the planks thanks to information from Ronnie Baird. It seems that the scale size will be 5mm x3mm lots and lots of planks :o :o .
-
Make sure you have lots of clamps then get some more :o .
Using slow setting epoxy to give time for adjustements.
-
Sides completed just before the Christmas rush.
-
Very interesting!
Methinks I have seen this once upon a time. {-) {-) O0
-
Strange how great minds think alike. %% %%
-
Hi..Look super....What size is it,,,,,do you have eny plan or drawings for it.
Regards Bernhard
-
I purchased a set of frame tracings from Ronnie Baird USA of Rappahannock Boat Works.

Needed some work but happy so far.
The current full size Torpedo stern, Holly Lyn, is 24’ length & beam of 6’6”.
-
Stage one completed, I made one or two changes to the shadows which has resulted, I think, in the launches widest point being slightly further aft.
As the process tends to produce unique one off models I am happy to live with the hull as it has turned out.
-
:-)) Hey Mark,
It looks great!
You will be pleased with the running qualities of this hull. The wide flat run aft keeps the hull from squatting at speed.
Before everyone laughs, here is a picture of this hull underwater design in 1889 at speed. 30mph
-
Thanks for the feedback ,learning to stand on my head to view the model %% .

Update images:
-
:-)) Wow, your doing great!

It's much more straight forward when you follow in the footsteps of somebody who knows what they are doing Reggie :} .
-
Just added the second coat of epoxy. Discovered that Hardener 207 is slightly different to that used in the USA due to health and safety rules. This results in a slight tint but seems to bring out the wood really well.
-
My Dad once told me "its a very brave man that produces a boat all finished in wood"
You are doing a great job and I am throwing away my wood butchering tools !!! :((
Keep up all the good work, look forward to further pics :-))
-
Looks Very good! :-))
I like the tint. It seems the 207 here is more clear than the 206 but it still has a slight tint to it too.
Did you cover it with cloth too?
Reg
-
Hi Reg used 80 g cloth which is the nearest I could find to the cloth you used I have some 40g for the decks.
I think it will need one more coat after a rub down with wet and dry.
-
Mark - the hull really looks great. Beautiful.
-
I have just pulled the hull from the frames could not resist.
It was proving difficult to get to the upper planks and I wanted to see if it would come off. :embarrassed:
It did, boy is it light I can't believe it. I am thinking that I might line out the interior with a veneer of the timber used to construct the hull and then finish to a high quality.
-
Stan tries out his new hull ok2
-
Hi steamup........& our SteamboatPhil says....."My Dad once told me "its a very brave man that produces a boat all finished in wood"
I agree with Phil's Dad O0 ...but also suggest a well producded all wooden hull can be an element of absolute beauty and a reflection of the craftsman's ability
Just review some of the work by Patternmaker Mick & Jerry C ....keep up the good work :-)) & post more images as you progress.......Derek
-
After some head scratching I took the plung and started to clean up the interior of the hull.
I had thought that it would be too rough to get a good finish hence the idea of vaneering the interior.
Once I started to shave off the excess I became a little more confident in the end it all looked good so on with the cloth and the epoxy.
-
A couple more shots
-
Whats the white stuff? {:-{
We never have any thing like that here. {-)
Now that it's glassed inside, can you believe how strong it is?
-
Don't think you will see much in Texas Reggie its called SNOW and its a pain in the a**.
Took it down to the lake side (frozen solid) to show the lads at the club.
Everybody was impressed by the strength and the light weight of the hull.
I am about to start working out the location of the bulk heads with reference to the photos I have collected with your help.
-
Started on the deck work found it therapeutic %%
-
Update
-
Its just getting better and better, keep going, cannot wait to see it with the plant in :-)) :-))

Henk.

-
Had a few days to work on the hull.
-
Bulk of the work done although as yet not fixed in place ,canopy next then the steam engine and boiler %% .
-
:-)) looks great,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :-))
-
:o Wow, you is one fast builder! O0 %% :}
Bernhard, this is the guy who can do yours! ok2
-
I have just cut out the template for the canopy, clearly once in place you can see very little of the model :embarrassed: :embarrassed: .
Not so sure now %% .
-
Well this is it with a few clamps to hold all in place ,not sure about it at the moment I will leave it for a day or so to see how it grows on me.
The top will be painted mid grey.
-

:-)) Absolutly magnifique ! ok2 O0
-
It's looking great.
I dislike the canopy enough to not bother making one and having to extend my boiler flue.
What engine are you going to install?
Cheers,
Reg
-
Hi Reg been a little distracted helping a couple of friends with their steam boat projects.the cannot has been put to one side still not sure.
Engine will be an Isis built from castings I think you might have had one at some stage.
