I think I've seen plans for a gun/cam system for battleships whereas as the guns are rotated to full broadside, they raise to some 45 degrees or so and back when the turret is returned to 0. But aside from that, micro servos in the turret or the P96 ServoMorph from ACTion Electronics comes highly recommended.
I think the original searchlights on these vessels were powerful carbon-arc and that can be well replicated with high intensity cool-white LEDs. The power of these LEDs is amazing. You might be able to find a jumbo LED that fits in the searchlight housing perfectly, maybe an 8mm?

Ran across this thread with a great many 3D computer generated illustrations of the Bismarck, lots of armament details too.
Very image intensive:

I am constantly amazed at the references/links found and referred on various posts.
My searches generally result in, cr*p, p*rn or other rubbish <:( <:( <:(
Mustn't be holding my mouth right or something.
Good references :-)) :-)) :-))

I think the proper search posture is right hand on mouse, left hand supporting the chin. All else leads to failure. ;)
(or vice versa if one possesses a "southpaw")
