mini loyal class build
Removed smilies from Title
-
hello there fellow model boater's, I made a start on my new loyal class today, i am lucky enough to have a model slipway loyal and a smaller models by design, loyal, its taken me almost 2 years to work my way through the larger model, however its nearing the end and ive started on the smaller one.
iknow some of you are saying, " finish the one your doing before you start another one" .. and in all fairness i should, but im excited to finally start it. ive had the smaller compact kit for just over a year, and pritty much just opened the box, now it looks like your adverage compact kit, "HOWEVER" most of you have built some of the model slipway compacts and they are just "MINT". upon opening up the box all you have is a set of plans and your modeling plastic for the hull ECT, there were no instructions with the kit witch was a small set back, however you can improvise, i still have all the instuctions from the larger MS loyal so i am using those as a rough guide. attached is a photo of my ms loyal followed by 3 photos of the compact loyal
-
I would be interested in seeing your pictures.... they don't seem to have uploaded though. With regard to finishing one model before starting another... everyone here seems to have at least five models on the go at any one time... so I wouldn't worry about two. :}

Yes I'd like to follow your Loyal class build. O0

I look forward to watchng this build. I have contemplated a few times getting the 1/48th ex Metcalfe Mouldings now Models by Design but never got round to it. Sometimes the smaller size models of popular craft get overlooked and people go for the big ones. I have a Sirmar 1/48th HDML which is imho a lovely little boat. I dont think Sirmar do it any more, I think it stopped a long time before the business changed hands but even when it was available, most builders opted for the 1/24th version.
Notice your post says photo's of the larger and smaller attached but I cant seem to see them? Upload issues?
-
sorry guys i had a few uploading issues last night but im going to try again now, okay first two pics are my ms loyal
-
now ive got the picture issues sorted, time to move on, these pictures are of the compact loyal class, as i got it out the box. i will do a size comparison picturs over the next few days :)
-
using the plans provided i established that to get the correct curve of the hull i could use a 2cm long and 2cm high piece of cardboard, prop it on the decking inlay, and drew a line.
-
making a cardboard cut out i also drew around the water freeports along the hull
-
moving on the deck, i copied the plans and transfered a picture of the deck onto the cardboard, then drawing around the cardboard onto the 1mm plastic card. then i cut out the hull openings, and glued the props for the superstructure, centre and forward structures.
-
hopefully by the end of the week most of the building work will be done, and i can move on to look at the fittings im going to need to complete the kit, %% %% :-))
happy boating fellas

Excellent !
I will be watching this one from the Other Side ...

Looks good... I really like this boat. They discontinued the model didn't they?

Lee
no they have not discontinued this one, this is the models by design compact loyal class, scale 1/42, "however" the did discontinue the model slipway loyal, if what i have been told is true, it should be back up for sale soon, (it has gone under the knife) so to speak.
-
models by design compact loyal class, scale 1/42,
Dan, If I remember rightly the Models by design Moderater is built to 1:50 scale.......I made it ( the plug and moulds) for a mate many years ago when he was the RNVR Captain of the vessel. He( the ship ) was based in Liverpool at the time and he being my ex metal work teacher from my school days put the screws on me to make it, but the only plans he could come up with were the official RN ones that had been given with the actual vessel, and including lines and GA I made it for him at the 1:50 scale supplied.........so you're looking for 1:48/1:50 scale fittings.
I passed the moulds on to Metcalf mouldings years ago
-
ahhh i did mean 1/48 :-)
-
Does the plan set include templates for the superstructure, deck and companionway parts etc?
-
Is that Kingsgate Park Yate in the photo? Are you the young Dan I think you are from YSMBC? or am I totally wrong?
-
ummmmmm, it comes with templates or your basic model, all thats on there is the lower superstructure, wheel house, funnel, and the centre and forward structures
-
yes it is and yes i am :D
-
Ah I thought so. I recall when you first got your MS Loyal and you had got a state of the art sound system to go in her and we discussed how to fit it? Did you carry on with the installation? Looks like your MS puffer in the pic from a few regatta's ago. Havent seen you at recent regatta's but good to see your still building.
-
ahh yeah, i was ment to be coming out during 2012 but couldnt get time off work, new job now already booked the first openday off just gotta pop over to dereks at some point, yeah the ms loyal is coming on, most of its finished now, just waiting to get everything wired up, fittings fitted, and paint to be applied, i also got a smoke gen for her, but not sure on the gen yet, need to order the new sound system tomorrow, burnt it out a while back doing a test run
-
That was some pricey burn out then lol!!
-
yeahh, did try to repair it but it was a no go, hopfully ill have both loyals up and running for the spring open :D
-
evening model boaters :D time for an update on this build.
my day yesterday was spend making the centre and forward companionways, and my evening was spend looking for the many fittings that its going to take to finish the model, pritty much found everything other than some lifeboats with scale stands :/ mayyy have to make them. anyway photos below show the companionways, and hopfully ill have the lower superstructure finished by later on tonight, pictures to follow later
-
evening fellow model boaters, just a quick update on progress, i am currently waiting on a supply of fittings. so bare with me, should be up and building within the next few days :)
-
These days I wouldnt even bare with my wife!! {-)
-
haha ahh mums are just the same, nagging at everything being all round the place {-)
-
Better than being in Canada - over there " Bear with me" is a 999 call.
Dave
-
lol true, i have often had the erge to call 999 when its at the stage of, ( leave me alone im trying to concentrate/ knife slips off plastic and cuts finger )
-
afternoon fellow modelers :} just a little update, i revived my running gear from westbourne models and some fittings from cornwall model,
the running gear consists of a MFA 385 motor, 15-amp MTRONIKS ESC, and a small robbe Rudder, still to look at batteries...
The fittings consisted of mostly 3, ball 20 mm high brass stations, and a small about of 0.7mm brass wire to start making the railings.
i also painted a few parts of the deck fittings for my MS loyal,
enjoy the pictures and i hope everyones enjoying the build,
hopefully tonight ill have finished off the wheelhouse, and lower superstructure, and started making the front panel where the nav lights go, this part isn't included in the plans, so i need to look at measurements and scratch build it..
happy boating :-))

hi barrie, i havent found any winches witch look similar to the ones on the original ship, i did come across a website a week ago that does alot of fittings for models from 1/40-1/50 it was an american site and was something like scalemodelfittings.com or something along those lines, would be nice to see some pics of your model barrie :)
happy boating,
Dan %)

Dan,
Nothing to show as yet ok2 Only drilled the hole for the prop shaft and stuck on one side deck support. I plan to use a Graupner Speed 400 motor as the current draw is considerably less than the MFA 385 I have. I bought a slim prop-shaft from Model Boat Bits with a 25mm brass prop. Its not easy finding props for 2mm shafts. The biggest seems to be 25mm. If this is too small I will have to fit a plastic one. You can get 30mm plastic.
I will be making my own rudder from sheet brass and brass tube. Look at Battlecrafts for winches - not sure if they have the correct one, but I did buy a 1/48th one from them for another project.

hi barrie, i did look at the Graupner Speed 400 motor but i wanted a motor that had a little more power, so ended up with the MFA 385, i brought a standard 3mm prop shaft and 3mm prop, the shaft does look a little big for the hole so may need some tweeking or a smaller shaft, i ended up buying a robbe rudder, (small) it seems to be the right size for the loyal

i got the posts from cornwall models, the ones on the original vessels are flat, but decided to add a little character to the model and went with the 3 ball posts

feels like christmas again, just found these tucked away in the corner of the shed, its given me a few idea's and hopfully there will be enough room to fit it in :D
