Some more info for you
The show will OPEN on the SAT at 9am an NOT 10 AM this is to try and eliminate the usual rush,so for this to work May we ask all you club members to folow these simple rules
Mark and Myself will be at the venue from 7am so the clubs who can not come over on the Fri to set up can do so and WE also ask that The members DO NOT Go to the traders Before 9am as some will be setting up and lets give them time to do it.
On the Sunday the doors will open at 10 am so you can have a lie in LOL
We will have the Steam Trains running on the Sunday and also some Trucks.
The Pool this year is going to be moved to the other side of the Lesure centre and will be accessed from the main hall so it will make sailing easier....and YES there will be some more water in it this year....I PROMISE.
The venue is Extremly Hospitable including on the Friday for those of you staying over locally a Curry and Quiz for the grand price(we have subsidised it of £2.50 )book early for that ....its a licenced bar, catering,a lake and a pool...what more could we ask for.
Speaking form Experience of going to this event last year and I must confess our team was POOH POOH LOL but it was a great laugh and the Curry was trully MARVELLOUS and I am not saying this in jest either is was EXCELLENT.
If clubs want to book in then PLEASE contact MARK WILLIAMS at A MODEL WORLD...Tables are available through him
Dave

It's gone up a whole 5p in one year?!?!?!?
I hope the show is at least 1.2658227848101267% better!

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=41350.msg420344#msg420344
Can someone 'borrow' me 5p?
See you there!
Martin %)
-
Martin I can TOTALLY Gtee YOU emphatically that it will be BIGGER and BETTER than Last Year and Not only that We are ORGANISED this year..............I HOPE
OH as for the 5p I will PERSONALLY lend it you
Dave
-
Lend Dave? are we to assume you'll be charging 1.2658227848101267% interest then? :} {-) {-)
Don't worry Martin ............. I'll buy the tea! {-)
-
Your maths is way out, Martin. A 5p increase means that the show will have to be 1.0126 as good as last year's show. If adding 5p will help speed up the flow of customers through the door then I'm all for it.
Maybe they'll open the bar this year, too.......... 8)
DM
-
Dave I don't think the slow flow through the door was really due to the entrance fee having to accomodate the 5p in change .............. I reckon it was all the "meanies" who wanted and waited for it ! {-) {-) {-)
-
Loads of clubs showing interest from what I gather there are now 7 clubs booked in allready and the Traders are comming in thick and fast.
Loads to see from Boats, Trains and Other attractions Even Steam Boat Phil !!!!!!!
Dont forget to attend one of the Best and most friendly boat show on the calender

Had fun, blackmailed Martin a few times as per mrs mayhems instructions! Met a strange Welshman on the A Model stand, and his wife, Kelly! Nice to see you again Stavros and Mrs Stav.
Bought five plans from Dave Metcalfe, if you haven't seen his plans yet I suggest you buy a set, they really are fantastic plans of warships.
Finally, even though I got a major smack from mum, I bought a Vintage models Wavemaster 35, couldn't hide it in time and big mouth Dad let slip... :D
-
Spent the afternoon at Coalville, what an event. Could have spent a small fortune, but the wife ( I mean accountant) put paid to that plan <:( <:( <:(
Saw some fantastic boat displays from the attending clubs, along with some submarines.
The organisers deserve a thank you for setting up an event that has certainly enhanced the model boating community.
Thank you.
-
My first visit to this show.
The club dislays were excellent although I would have liked to see a few more traders. I enjoyed speaking to those present who are really committed to supporting the hobby. I hope they did as well as they deserved to. The outdoor pool was very good too. I did note however that by about 3pm the hall was pretty much empty. Hopefully there will be a good attendance tomorrow.

That's a bit harsh. The Club stands were very good with an excellent display of models of all types and all credit to them. I really enjoyed looking at the work on display. Yes, traders were a bit thin on the ground but otherwise it was a great advert for our hobby.

Well I loved it, coming from a wargaming background where i helped run some shows I inow how much work and effort goes into something like this. I must say that my greatest overall impression was how friendly everyone was from traders and club folks to my fellow attendees.
I was in awe of some the models and as a noob it was great to see such a variety of stuff on show. Saw inside a model Sub, it's wiring was a work of art
I picked up my Eldergarth kit from MMM, boy what a friendly crew they are :} , really gave me a lot of confidence in the build. Spent the night in the hotel going over the packs and I still can't believe how much is in there.
Also picked up a Steam sound system from Action for my Anteo, and a nice couple of books about UK Tugs.
All in all for me and Mrs Baldy a great trip and whilst the show is maybe still on the small side at the moment it's got brilliant potential to grow and IMO its got the foundational stuff just right.
Never got a chance to introduce myself to anyone from Mayhem <:( , sorry guys I was too much like a kid in a candy store.....
-
perhaps the earlier poster who complained about how dull the show was may like to put his name forward to the organising committee to assist for next year. that way he can have a say on what needs to be done to improve it..... somehow i dont think that will happen.

.... Hi John! :-)) ok2

Sorry John but I think you are a little bit to critical of the people who organized
the event and the traders who without them attending we modellers would not
be able to touch and feel the products first hand and pick up items that would
be to expensive or difficult to post, and also thanks to the boat clubs who attended
It may be small but it is growing. O0

Hi martin.
while I do not wish to decry the model of the special ops schnellboot, modellers licence and all that but in real world it
would never have been able to carry the Flack 88 as at weighing in at 7,407kg or 7.29 ton it would have roller over and
sank.

Yeah, I know but I loved it as a great "what if" model. :-))
The photos don't show it clearly but the paint job a nearly all shades of black and looking very sinister..... and did you notice the missing torpedo doors!!
NB: I wouldn't liked to have been near that gun when it was fired!

Great set of photos Martin...
Colin
Agreed, but might it be possible to put the watermark in a different place please?
It's not an issue with a 'general' photo, but sometimes the detail gets distorted on some of the specific images.

NB: I wouldn't liked to have been near that gun when it was fired!
Would have slowed forward movement of boat down a bit.
As a point of interest, when a "Mollins" gun (WW2 Cannon) was fitted to the DH Mosquito for anti submarine sorties, only so many rounds could be fired at one burst due to it slowing the aircraft down so much. Auto reloading mechanism was designed by the guy who later did the same for cigarette machines. At least the reload rate could be maintained, unlike Phalinx and Goalkeeper.
Regards Ian.
-
( I remember reading that when the gun on the A10 'Warthog' was first fired, it
produced so much flash & smoke, it staled the jet engines due to lack of oxygen! )

Obviously thinking of the lady in the bath........! ok2
-
Well done Martin for putting up so many photo's so quickly. Great work.
Shame that someone put up such a negative comment about the show on the forum. We all know its not the biggest show on the planet but when you take into account that its held in a location/venue that enables the entry price and trade stand prices to be positioned at a low cost then on balance its a fine effort. A group from the Moorhen club visited and they have already applied to have a club stand next year ..... so they must have enjoyed themselves. Be warned, they put on a very fine club stand indeed, so there will be a bigger challenge to win the Club Stand trophy next year.
Can I respectfully suggest that if anyone else wants to provide negative feedback about the show, that they do so in a constructive manner. That way Mark (and his helpers) can listen and wherever possible take on board any sensible suggestions and ideas.
If any other clubs want to be there next year, Mark would be delighted to hear from you.
At the risk of going off topic ..... on Sunday I was persuaded by commodore Alan at the 'A Team Boatyard' to have a large slice of cake. Blimey Debbs, it was yummie, yummie, yummie ...... I'll have two slices somewhere on the Thames or perhaps even more at Wicksteed !!!

Just did a bit of googling about 88mm flak guns and Kriegsmarine torpedoes, and their respective weights. Seems that four of the six versions of 88mm flak guns weighed 5000Kg when ready for action, as opposed to over 7000Kg when trundling up the road with a ton and a bit of trolley under each end and complete with all the fittings needed for a land based anti aircraft gun. The 4 torpedoes carried in a standard fit would have weighed in at 6000Kg. It is assumed that since the tubes were blanked off, torpedoes and launching/handling gear would have been stripped out. The resulting CoG would probably be the same, or near enough for plausibility.
While it would have been uncomfortable letting the thing off, it should be remembered that the boat was for use of special forces, so would act as slinky transport for insertion, then as a static monitor for heavy support. It would not be fired on the run. As such, those cunning, but efficient, Teutonics would probably have deployed their retractable bilge keels* to aid stability.
*extreme modelers license, I will have to ask Jim about that. He probably modeled them retracted.
-
Nice bit of plausibility research Malcolm! :-))
-
Jim might have to do a bit of measuring with the possibility of sawing a bit off the end of the barrel.
The trick with plausibility research is stopping before it becomes implausible, like wondering what they would have done with the weight saved by removing the third engine.......perhaps thats where the retractable bilge keel of myth. legend and downright lying lived?
-
How this Andy? - (gallery recreated and uploaded)

Unless it contravenes privacy rules, of course.
I only count seven members in Martin's photos, plus the bloke behind the lens. The fat, grey-haired old geezer holding the Sea Nymph model on the Component Shop/ACTion stand is me; the sylph-like creature lurking among the kits on A Model World's stand is Dave 'Stavros' Jones (aka Dad2B). Graham and Marie of the King Lear club are on Vintage Model Boat Co's stand, Bill (203) Warder is fishing for mermaids and there's a couple of other guys whose names escape me for the moment but whose faces are familiar. More were there but aren't in the photos.

on page 3 there is a photo of the models by design stand. is the gent behind the counter in the background the owner. i cant believe the luxury you guys have in the UK with the quantity and quality of model marine fittings you have on hand. i would think our whole country's model fittings combined wouldnt be as much as displayed in your one show.

I wasnt at the show myself, and I respect you all have to have your own opinions and this is rightly so,but whatever the result of these shows, there is a great deal of wok and time and effort goes into putting one on. John you are so obviously in the small amount of people to complain(just you!) on here should tell you quite plainly that others do not support you.
You obviously want to make a big issue of this, and before it does escalate,I would ask the Mods to step in.You have a choice of two either go or dont go to next years show, and I would suggest the latter.
I hope this is spelt out to your complete satisfaction?

Agreed O0 O0
Lets stick to the topic.
I, for one, am most gratefull to Martin for posting all the photos.
The Taplin Twin and the Gannet motors took me back to my youth. :embarrassed:
I never could get the TT to run smoothly and swapped it for a Miles 5cc. special.
I still have one of our Gannets, Dad and I had one each. Bought from the man himself!
Pity that I cannot run it on most of the waters here as they no longer allow i.c. <:(

Guys.....taking the liberty on speaking for OZ members......"Peter up Ballina way, BrianB6 in Melbourne & Rarrrarrty in Brisbane & all others" ...........we would love to have a marine model expo in OZ the size & scale of that presented at your Coalville boat show :-))
Well done to all concerned & to Martin for the digital images........ didn't see too much steam though <:( .......Derek

Thank you tigertiger. O0
Yes it would be nice to have a show but we don't have enough 'boating' model shops and clubs are too far apart.
-
Our club has run several model expos in the past but, as we are few in number, the burden of organisation falls on a very small group. The expos were very popular with both exhibitors and the public alike, but the ratio of return (income) to work involved did not justify the enormous amount of effort put in by that small group. It will probably be some time before we attempt another, unfortunately :((

I am pleased to say that I attended the Coalville show on saturday and thought the show was well organised and a pleasure to be greeted in such a friendly way by both the Traders and the boat club members, they all took the time to speak to you and answer my questions unlike some of the larger shows that are to busy and they are unable to answer all my questions. Keep up the good work.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if that attitude transferred to the Forum... %)

'Bout time muddy raters started to read posts in context and note tongue in cheek comments punctuated with smilies.

Hi Everyone, (http://www.backstreet.net/chat/images/wave-smiley.gif)
Dave has laid the gauntlet down to John so as far as I'm concerned that's the end of the issue. Both parties can discuss the matter off Forum if they so wish. Any further comments on Forum will be removed.

ok2
I think you're very lucky to have dealers in your shows!
Here when there are merchants of Helicopters £ 20 or merchants donuts
we would be happy to have a show like Coalville

Hello All,
I spent a long time on the Forum last night, long past Midnight, reading
what I had posted about the Coalville Show.
I cannot believe that I did that.
Totally out of Character for me, almost as if I was reading posts from
some one else !!.
I profoundly Apologise for my caustic, uncalled for comments, to all
Forum Readers and most of all the Organizers.
My trip down to Coalville had been a nightmare!, taking much longer than
I had planned, roadwork's, detours, miles of Speed cameras.
So when I arrived at the Show, I was not in the best of moods.
The trip back home was not much better !.
However, that does not excuse the awful posts that I made later on this
Forum.
Viewing the Forum this morning I see that the Admin has removed a lot of
the posts, but not from my memory, I am very ashamed that I sent them.
I hereby Promise that it will NOT happen again.
John Dowd.

We rarely come on here these days but I had to for this.. I had heard of the posts (no more mention) but I had been told of the last post from Jay Dee
Knock me over with a feather.... I am struggling for words .....This is not like the forum I was used to when someones unhappy. Lets hope its the start of something new for Martin...... a forum full of positives .......Its a refreshing change to see that post and I will say this.
Its a 'big man' behind a computer but it’s a Gentleman that stands up and says Sorry.
Thank you
A big thank you to all those that attended, the trade, the clubs and the visitors and the helpers who we cannot manage without...a special thanks. al;l those people make all the hard work worthwhile
We will roll on again next year and lest keep what we have left going Its been said by many and I find it a strange descriptive comment but its a 'friendly show' I think I now understand it... We are going to keep it that way.
To the guys and lasses in far flung regions of the world we would love and I speak for all the trade here I am sure we would love to come and do an expo or show in Aus or France... now all we need is a generous Richard Branson to take up model boating Martin can I put you down for official photographer on the flight.

Simply couldnt have put it any better myself Marc.
