Hi
Only three weeks to the big event of the year we have twenty seven clubs, six individuals and twenty two traders attending.  For the first time in this country we have a Russian club exhibiting. They are called The Federation of Ship Modelling Sport of Russia Section C Static models.  Have a look on our website the show cases alone are something out of this world.  The traders cover the whole range of what you need to build and more.

Over this Model Boat Convention weekend there is also a once a year event being held not too far from this show it's the IOM Nationals at Fleetwood we have 84 entries from all over the the World including our World Champion Peter Stollery. Amongst others there will be Sailsetc's Graham Bantock and Housemartin Sails Martin Roberts plus BG Sails Brad Gibson current UK and World Champion Marblehead sailor.
If you get some spare time after the show pop to the Fleetwood lake and get amongst the skippers and look at all the current boat designs and some of the best racing in the World.
The week prior to this is Vane sailing if you have never seen this done it's a skill to be appreciated how the skippers trim the sails and set the vane to free sail against other boats down the lake

If you click on the banner in blue below it'll take you to my facebook page 'wirral model boats' where you'll see some of today's pics. They'll also be on mayhem after i've taken tomorrows snaps.

I would make just one comment and which is: that it would courteous, if during the closing speeches and presentation of prizes, others in the close vicinity would keep their voices down and the noise of braking down stands (why can't you wait until after the awards have been made?) to an absolute minimum.  Yesterdays shenanigans really left a poor impression.

hi circlip

you have hit the nail right on the head , this is my moan. always pick the museum ones as winners yet some one who has put there heart and soul in get no praise, you will never get people building as they think that you have to be perfect so don't show them, should have some sort of award for novice builders.

Unless they are obviously meant to be static then I think a float and move test should be part of the judging process.
After all they are supposed to be model boats :-)) :-))

aaahhh - but they are still model boats - they should be a static class and R/C class, I agree I love to see the quality craftmanship and I am in Awe of the commitment to the cause, equally in awe of those who build them to museum quality and are R/C - but regularily disappointed to turn up to open days and meets etc and find that these vessels are never placed on the water even just tied up to the mock jetty, giving the aspiring onlooker a view what it looks like on water (probably don't want to get them dirty is the first thing I hear from my lads - I know that they are heavy and have to explain that to them  :P ).

Hello,

"To Sail, or not to Sail"

Some of these boats I am sure have never sailed, or if they have, only for a few seconds.
I was once at the side of a chap with a Lifeboat, who placed an expensive plastic cover over his boat within the first few drops of rain, saying "I don't want it to get wet".
My schooner sailed for about 3 hours the same day - - - and weather!.

At Haydock I had to place my J Class boat with the side that got scratched at Bridlington the previous weekend, against the wall, but it was enjoyed by many people, rather do that than not turn up at the show.
IF, the rules were to be changed and boats HAD to sail, the Competition winners lists would change radically!!.

I completely agree with Neil about the huge amount of skill
and dedication that goes into the show models.
We had a show day at the lake this Sunday and about 50 models
turned up because there was a shiny new trophy for
best in show.
Out of 30  plus members we normally have 5 or 6 each
sailing day getting boats wet but the rest just build for
the pleasure of the build and I can respect that as I could never
achieve their standards.

BTW
JD did you get the scratches tied up to the end of the
pontoon at Brid?

Not trying to stir the pot, just think there could be some
separate classes for wet and dry.

Hello,

Ned, yes, I thought it was white paint at first, but they were scratches.
Been doing LOTS of work on our house, not had time to fix the boat !.
Bit naughty putting the boat against the wall, but no one noticed.

I would agree that a distinction should be made between static and working models for judging purposes.

However I also agree that 'museum quality' working models can suffer unreasonable damage in bad weather conditions as they can be damaged beyond repair if subjected to the elements. Every time it rains these days I find that my car seems to be covered in sandy deposits! This sort of thing is almost impossible to remove from high quality scale models as are saltwater stains so I can understand why builders are reluctant to expose their works of art in those situations.

Colin

Post by: warspite on August 27, 2013, 10:32:19 pm
I agree, stains are a problem, show stoppers are by their nature what they are designed for, but if it is being judged on in a competion it needs to be classed as a static if it never really 'gets it's bum wet'  ok2  , at the waterside it's nice to encourage others to what is possible whether that is a static or bum wetter  ok2  (too much use ?), personnally i think it's nice to see them in close up detail with them being shown on the water in a naval revue style pass by, but yet to see this happen  <:( , mine are all bed wetters, sorry bum wetters but because they are so small I am more afraid of them being swamped - time to move to subs methinks.
Title: Re: The Model Boat Convention - 2013
Post by: Colin Bishop on August 27, 2013, 10:44:47 pm
I suppose the truth is that, on the water and at a distance , there isn't much to distinguish a museum quality model from a more practical high quality working model. The extra quality of the 'museum' model is best appreciated on the bench ashore.

Evening all, Circlip, with ref to your request for simpler models, here's a photo of my daughters (age 9) springer tug "Fairy Dust" built with a lot of help from Grandad and myself. Precisely Gary, and without trying to demean the builders, anyone seeing that would think "I could do that" and enjoy "Playing" with the finished item. "Scratch build" at its finest.

The Results will be posted up on the website ASAP , unfortunately the person who updates the website has very limited internet access at the moment and is unable to update the site, but should be back to normal soon.
I know Runcorn & District won the Best themed stand  :-))

Larry
