Title: General query on Severn Class
Post by: dpbarry on February 03, 2013, 07:14:57 pm
Hi folks.

Do all Severn class lifeboats have the crane/jib? Seen a couple of models which looked like they didn't have a crane/jib but wasn't sure if it was just the camera angle.

Having just done a quick google image search, it seems the removal of the crane or not having one from the start is widespread. As an example, 17-02 and 17-03, the first two production boats, probably didn't have the crane fitted when built, and I found a photo of 17-13 without it either.

A far as I know it was crew choice whether to have the crane, as some favoured the ramp off the stern that the Arun class used.

I thought it was only the Falmouth Severn 17-29 "Richard Cox Scott" that didnt have a Hiab? The crew here did have a say in the matter, and they opted not to have one?

Phew!!.  Thought I was losing my marbles there for a second. Actually, 17-29 was the one I was looking at in the photos on main site in relation to the Boat Show.

Hi Declan,
If it was the model 17-29 you were looking,it would most likely have been Rob Smiths supeb 1/12th scale. It really is the bees knees, having on board camera  etc, but it also self rights!I always love seeing it.

I thought it was just Falmouth's boat, but I've looked at a bunch of photos and 17-13 Kirkwall, 17-14 Aith, 17-18 Stornoway and 17-29 Falmouth don't have the Hiab.

Hi Mick F

Yes, It looks a magnificent model. Actually, the word 'Model' doesn't really do it justice considering what he has produced. I'd love to know how he achieved the self righting mechanism.  I assume the hull and superstructure are two separately sealed units that somehow are fixed together.
