Hi guys, I wonder if anyone out there has had a similar problem when starting up their computers.
After a normal shut down, saving settings, shutting down etc,
On a (normal start up) after switching on the power socket I used to have a blue screen
with(cable disconnected) on it. Then after pressing the power on button on my tower
windows would install.
What is happening now is when I switch the power socket on I get a black screen
telling me invalid configuration info, time of day not set, strike F1 key to continue
F2 to run the set up utility.
When I strike F1 windows installs and I have to set time of day to get things working.
Any Ideas

sounds like the backup battery has died.... its usually a large button battery, not dissimilar to a giant watch battery
You'll need to open up the case to find it
*Tech_trousers = true
What make and model is your computer and Ill help you find the right battery.

No problem :) Dells are quite easy to open so you should have no problem changing the battery, should be about the size of an old 10p piece

^ What he said.
While you're in there, give it a (careful) vacuum. You'll probably be surprised by the amount of crud around the fans.

do you have to wear any anti-static wristband ?
I know I will have to use a plastic screwdriver to prize it out.

If you only touch the battery - no, BUT before you unplug from the mains, touch a bit of bare metal on the chassis, then unplug.

Hi guys,
thank you for your help, I fitted a new battery and my PC is running as it should do.
Just proves how great this forum is when you have people like the above willing
to share their knowledge to help in any way shape or form.
Once again guys, thanks. :-))

That'll be a 40 pounds consultation fee (about what PC world would charge), made payable to Martin_Admin ;D
Glad you are up and running

John a desktop is relatively easy to fix. My old laptop needs a new battery, but its a major job to get at the board. As I don't use it very often, I'll put up with re-inputting the time and date for a while O0

What type of laptop is it? Done it easily enough before but depends on laptop.
May just be a case of popping out the keyboard. Usually one or two screws on bottom of laptop and a flathead screwdriver to pop clips then slide ribbon cable off and replace battery. Might even be able to do it without removing the ribbon cable.

Declan,
Its not that difficult, just rather fiddly. I have done it once to add memory. As I only use it very occasionally, every new model in fact, to cut the names etc from vinyl its no big deal if the date is not correct %%

I have to say, I've done the same. 30 seconds in bios and bingo, up and running again. {-)
