hi people to give a low down .im going to try an give a detailed build of this model an try an help future people build this model model more easy. ive had quite alot of respone an help to get a idea where to start . feel free to add opions in an hints an tips
i purchased a hms cossack off modeldockyard. from deans marine. with the motors an fitting kit . well today at 9am i started the build
firstly what needed doing is the line work at the top of the boat needed sanding all round
doing that an to find out where the line is . just above the plating is a line . you need to sand it too that line. all around the boat
show im doing to show you the model all lined up an ready and half way through sanding
(http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/3497/20130207141545.jpg)
now the hull is sanded now after about 3 house of careful sanding
i then started sanding about a inch down from the top of the inside of the hull . this is too hel pthe wood stick
[URL=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/571/20130207135048.jpg/](http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/5153/20130207135048.jpg)
after this i then started to wash the hull down with warm soapy water an abit of jif cream . an rinsed the model down an wipe;t down then left to dry
[URL=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/832/20130207142246.jpg/](http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/32/20130207142246.jpg)
. after three hours of letting to dry i then started to draw the 2mm line down the hull
(http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/6/20130207141545.jpg/)
-
I am looking forward to watching your build... keep the pictures coming :-))

-
the next step in the hull build is making a tool to draw your 2mm line . well simple way of doing it is
1x 15inch rule . cut 5mm off the ruler an then glue it 2mm away from the end of the ruler . the end you just cut . this gives you the 2mm line you need
well here is pictures of the finshed tool in action an all draw up
(http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/2906/20130207145725.jpg)
[URL=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/692/20130207145712.jpg/](http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/7109/20130207145712.jpg)

-
just remember at this point . every modeller makes mistakes . well i found my mistake . i forgot to smooth down a tiny part of the lip by the top deck . well as you can see my old line near the top. you can now see all smoothed down the new line .
that is this time . i throught time for tea an biccys . an a good look through the plan an detail sheet just to make shore i havent missed anythink out .
( an of course make the misses a cuppa . remember keep them sweet you get more time with your model an no hassle) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/849/20130207150824.jpg/)
-
I am looking forward to watching your build... keep the pictures coming :-))
Lee
hi lee ill keep the pictures coming no worries on that
-
tea break over ive now start glueing some strips of wood to the 2mm line an carfully making shore its 2mm . as we dont want the deck raised or too low.
[URL=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/26/20130207154915.jpg/](http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/508/20130207154915.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/543/20130207154119.jpg/)
here also you can see a picture what i mean making shore its 2mm deep
-
Looking forwards to this myself.
However question - why 15" rulers and not a cheaper 6"? But surely someone has designed a tool for this?
-
the more then likely have . but im doing this on the cheap. making the tools for the job. an buying them if need be on the cheap. one thing alot of modellers have told me specaily stan. you dont need all the high priced stuff. as you can buy it so much cheaper .
-

Guessing thats what he had to hand, or the 15" is wider
-
Hm. I think I shall be following this too as my next project (in about 3 years time :embarrassed: ) may well be something like this.
i throught time for tea an biccys . an a good look through the plan an detail sheet just to make shore i havent missed anythink out .
Yes indeed - nothing worse than tearing down work already done.

the part i was on about stan

Hi Shaddowfleet. I have no idea why this part should be like this. I have built a Deans Liberty Ship and Fletcher Class Destroyer but not a Cossack. I would recommed that you build a stand before you start construction making sure the stand sits on a level surface. Once the model is placed on the stand it can be checked for level using a small sprit level. A centre line will also help with construction. A visual check is good way of making sure construction is going alright, no levels or fancy tools for this operation just a good eye is all that is needed. I have used these methods during the construction of my models over the years. The above items are for guidance only, if you have any doubt then contact the model supplier or kit manufacturer.
:-)) :-)) :-))
-
Have u got a
pictures by any chance to get a idea what it means . Ive emailed deans marine qith photos and asking them for help
-
Check your build instructions. You should find details on how to make a stand for your model.
-
Ill have a look 2morro im shore there was somethink about it .
If not ill have to find a copy somewhere .
-
I have got a question . Do u mean a stand like the one my z37 sits on http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/5395/20130202213017.jpg
-
Yes
-
Brilliant . Well me an my dad are going to level the bench an then the jig . Like a real slip way.before anymore is built.
My father has look't at the pictures an is going to take measurments off the plans on width an see where is wrong
(Thank god )
-
Hi there, slight distortion is quite common with F/G hulls, but easy enough to rectify, just pull the sides in when you fit the deck beams and all will be fine..... :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Hi there are you shore dude . Ive been thinking of
taking measurments of the width of the hull plan to
Make shore im doing right . Me an my dad have been
talking about the bow and thinking the bow is wrong
As kit of the front deck is wider then the open can open up.
Also this 2mm line you have to do . Ive put the woood where
Its ment to go . But im baffed how the deck template an deck is
Ment to fit in 2mm depth an lay flat an level againist the hull
-
I think I''ll tag along with your Cossack build ..... O0

How silly ive been the tribal class destoryers one remains to
This day . Hmcs haida . Atleast now i will be able to get more research

Goos morning Shadow. With most Deans kits a little 'tweaking' is required with templates and plastic parts. best to cut everything out over size and then fettle them to fit, it tells you this on the general instructions page in your kit instructions. Just remember to shape the decks evenly on each side, otherwise the openings for the superstructures will be off centre. Have a look at Deans Marines forum, there are several build logs of their warship kits, not much on Cossack, but plenty on similar kits, all seem to encounter similar problems to yourself. The HMS Solebay being a case in point. http://www.deansmarine.co.uk/index.php?topic=427.0 as the bloke building it says, Deans kits are 'modelers kits', with most of the printed plastic parts needing adjustment to obtain a good fit. The HMS Kelly build thread also flags up similar problems http://www.deansmarine.co.uk/index.php?topic=227.0. Also, the plans will vary in size slightly depending on temperature and humidity, for example, on a warm, dry day, a part may measure out at say, 150mm, on a cold damp day, the same part will measure out at say, 152mm. So basically, you will have to make compromises as your build progresses.....
-
as anyone got the stand build sheet ???? for the hms cossack
-
talk about a blow out the water off my father . found out somethink really brilliant about my dad. he use to build 45ft canal barges. an he has built model boats before from scatch. when he seen what i done an the kit. he said not to worry.. he been taking measurements of the boat an plans an going to make his own out of wood. instead of plastic. i guess having a dad who use to build boats for a living an has a engineering back ground. an also qualifed black smith. and qualifed welding engineering working off drawings. he took one look at the plans an parts an said .. we will do it together
thanks dad :D

just a little update
lining up the hull
(http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/5481/20130208071509.jpg)[url=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/14/20130208071509.jpg/]
now the next stage of this model is the fore deck . lining that up to was fun . has to take about 2.5mm off both sides as the drawing an the main deck is not wider. so we both came to the idea the drawings to this is not 100% . but as you can see there is a gap. once the other beams are in place this will pull the model in
[URL=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/32/20130208071449.jpg/](http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/7742/20130208071449.jpg)
next in the job list is the for castle deck upper an lower as you can see . ive only just rested them in to place. but later this evening they will be lined up by my dad. as he is having a crack at it too.
[URL=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/856/20130208145927.jpg/](http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/8366/20130208145927.jpg)
this is a picture of the fore castle deck so far . many more hours placing it in the boat hull

Before you continue I would suggest that you, if you haven't already done so, is to fit the propeller shafts, rudder, motors and couplings; then decide where you are going to fit the battery(s), radio gear, wiring and ballast. It is much better to do these things now than to find that you have to rip the decks off to fit them at a later stage.
LB
-
we are not fitting the deck in just some beams in to hold the model in place.
ive never fit the prop shafts before has anyone have some advice on how too
-
Good evening Shadow, I put some tips on fitting shafts on your earlier thread... http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=41681.msg419671#msg419671... tack in place with a spot of cyano and check for alignment, ( dont forget to fit the a frames if required) when satisfied epoxy in place, adding support blocks as necessary inside the hull. finally, flair into hull from outside with car bodyfiller....
-
Good Day Ben
One of our club members has the Dean's Marine HMS Cossack, it looks good and sails well on the water.
-
hi thunder . is therer any chance your friend would be so kind to do some close up pictures of the boat an the inside. its very beautiful by the way. how long did it take your friend to build it
-
Good Day Ben
I'll ask him for some pictures, and post them for you

hi nick thank you very much for all your infomation im going to have ago at fitting the propa in the morning once ive had some sleep.
if im honest im not impressed with the propeller blades deans marine supply. i was considering in buying another kit from them. but i think after alot of thinking im just going to buy a plane . an build my own from scatch. i know the fitting are either cast or resin but i did think they would be better then what they are . but i guess its just i have high standereds what to expect . but im still plodding on with the kit. while im on the nights my dad is cracking the kits thru the day doing very little bits . but the good thing is i have some time off . so once ive taken the misses out . atleast ill get an hour or 2 having a build. im hoping by the end of the month ill have the hull done . we are moving house an i dont think ill get chance to have a play for a month or two
more pictures to follow 2morro

Good Day Ben

Richard
thank you very much :D atleast someone in the world has got this kit.
ive been looking all over the net an you never really see anyone with one .
i know about 2 weeks back there was one on ebay for sale . the guy wanted £250 for it built . but i got my z37 instead for £225 built
but hms kelly is on ebay at the minute for £315 built an ready. looks the part too . if i didnt have the cossack or my vosper mtb. an hms sheffiled/ hms penplope to build i would of gone an got it

Deans kits are good kits, the higher end models are more suited to the experiences builder who has a good few kits under his belt and is prepared to do a bit of fettling as a normal part of the build. Imagine the cost of a destroyer kit if it were to come with completely CNC cut parts accurate to the Nth degree, with absolutely perfect fittings all ready to paint? You will find most kits require cast fittings to be cleaned up, flash removed etc. Model aircraft do not have the same level of detail found on 1/96th or 1/72nd warship kits. My next project is to be Deans HMS Skirmisher, WW1 Cruiser, with 450 castings to prepare.. This can be done as a rolling process along side the rest of the build, whilst waiting for glue to dry, or just for a change of scene.
Regards,
Nick.

Good Day Ben
Try Cornwall Model Boats for props. I bought the Brass 3 blade "D" type (162 series) for my HMAS Arunta (Tribal Class) which (according to the plans), are the correct style for this ship.

ill more then likely think different once its built an on the water an want to order another one . i didnt realise just how much work is involed. an granted model aircraft dont have much detail . unless you put in yourself. i wish i still had pictures of my bristol scout an the fokker tri plane. but hard drive went down.
i really did like the idea of the hms dreadnought from deans marine .but ive been looking at fleet scale type 45.
but misses wont let me buy anymore until ive built every else . but she didnt say i couldnt buy the plans

Good Day Ben
I've spoken to Brian, he's going to bring his Cossack to our next sailing day, Sunday. I'll get as many pictures as I can.
This is my Tribal, HMAS Arunta (1/72). She was doing her first sea trials.
-
The hull looks the buisness, very nice.
Can you explain something to me as I've not built a deans kit. You have drawn a line 2mm down from the lip of the hull. And there's a piece of plasticard 'deck' in the bow. Does a second maybe plywood deck go over the plasticard? Which would make the top of the plywood level with the hull.

yes it does . but the deck plasticard has to be in line with the 2mm line

ok i have one question tho. abit of a big one for me .
regarding balancing your boat on sea trails. i was confused on how much to balance the hull down. is it to the water line ??? i havent balanced a boat before.

good day thunder greetings from the island that always rains.
the boat looks brilliant in that water. i so want to move down under.
i look forward to the photos of your boat an your friends boat
-
You will need a test tank (domestic bath) to ballast your boat, I use sheet lead as it is easy to shape around the bottom of the hull and keeps the centre of gravity low. bring it down to the waterline, then subtract the weight of motors, radio gear, batteries, fittings etc. Alternatively, place electrics in a plastic bag to avoid them getting wet, use lead to ballast down to the waterline. final trimming can be done when the model nears completion. :-)) :-)) :-))

Yes, the waterline or LWL is or should be on the plan. Just transfer the measurment across and weight the hull down with balast until it's on that line.
-
Brilliant ill start that in fhe morning . Ive got a full days building ahead of me
-
Hi Dan
If you want authentic props contact the prop shop they are very helpful and there props are great and they will deff the right props for a tribal

well what a fun day its been building the dam boat had to give up as nearly flung it down the garden.
started to put in the the rudder an realised there was a crack in the rudder an the metal rod was on the pee . so thrown it in the bin after taking measurements . also thrown in the bin the prop shaft up rights that hold the prop shaft on the outside. so another peice in the bin after the tiny little pins off them broken. so making some new ones with brass ones.also going to throw the casr metal ones in the bin an get some brass ones. i also wired up the motors an speed controller came through today. so all good fun. i hate throwing things away. but i want this model right an with better looking stuff . so im looking over the net for 1/96 aa gun sets.
anyways here are some pictures i know its not much .

Hi Dan
I'm following this build very closely as I'll be building a scratch built tribal in 1/128 scale. The guy you want for the AA guns is John Haynes. His fitting are brilliant I have used them the quality is the best.

When I modified this model I found that the margin for topweight is quite small- so you might be better with the Deans resin pom pom than the white metal one.
However- must agree that the Haynes fittings are the best- have used them on other models and the quality if superb. The 0.5 in MGs look great.
Hope this is of help,
James

That is one beautiful boat . Im going to have a couple of days off the model . I have got another update but as im down portsmouth working i think ill go an see the victory at the weekend

Hi thunder . Thank you to you an your friend . The pictures help't a great deal
I could do with some more . But im half way through finish off a mtb boat as the hns cossack
Was starting to get me abit down an stressed so i made a wooden kit model up instead to give
Me some fun while working out the vosper
Its a really nice boat tho. Beautiful done . I only hope mine comes out like this

well after careful thinking . dog attack't the deck so me an my father have scrap't the deck and replacing it with 2mm marine ply wood . the hole deck will remove instead of those tiny little excase hatchs. the hole deck will be held in with 10 tiny magnets. i know the top is going to be abit more heavy .but not by much . but ive been thinking of i will have to put a tiny bit more lead in the bottom of the boat to weigh it down just a little more.
the battery im going to run a 8 cell battery but at the 4.2v for both motors. the reciver is mirco
one standered servo
one speaker kit an module
one reciver battey .
one speed controller viper 20amp
so its all good im hoping i have it right . but ill find out in all good time
