Title: Glynn Guest 'Dusty Miller' Free Plan
Post by: goBulawayo on February 18, 2013, 07:47:38 pm
Hi All, has anyone built the free plan 'Dusty Miller' tug that came in Model Boats sometime in 2008? Attached pics show my progress so far, this tug will be fitted with an electric motor not steam as per the magazine build.

hi wayne,

it is nice to see some one makeing a good job of tug boat from free plans, you will learn a lot from doing this, then find you want to try more difficult types of builds ie plank on frame %%  keep up the good work

Hi David, this is practise for my plank on frame yacht that I started a while back, see http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=39179.0 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=39179.0)

The build article for this boat says to coat with a number of coats of cellulose dope in various dilutions. Is there anything cheaper that I could use as the dope seems to be really expensive. I bought a 125ml tin but at about £5 I can see myself needing to spend a lot more to do the 5 odd coats plus then another coat with tissue paper - I take it this will fill any minor gaps in the timber? Or at least the tissue paper will - Thanks Wayne

I would have thought that 2 layers would be ok.. 1 coat lightly sand then 1 more.

Thanks, would you dilute the first coat?

This is actually my third sail with this tug, but she is now properly ballasted and has a different motor (rather noisy it is though)- Few details to sort out and she is done. Is a fun little boat. She does nose dive a little under full power

Throaty sounds there, Wayne.  Very impressive.

Try a little strip of lead sheet low down in the stern.   ok2

Thanks Ken, will try that, though there is not much 'low down' area in the stern - I just need to not apply full power thats all -  Wayne

You might like to try wrapping a 2 inch strip around the prop tube.    :}

OK, will try that - Wish I could get rid of that vibration noise, I tried mounting the motor on a rubber strip but it did not help - The geared motor is quite noisy itself and it's transferring onto the hull and echoing around the inside - Anyway it will do it was only an 'easy' first build - Now to continue with my yacht and maybe start my Lake Kariba ferry.

Been adding a bit of detail to my Glynn Guest tug today, decals from various bits in my decals box, plus a tow hook. I added brass portholes a few weeks back and I have a few lego people to add to the boat, there is one in the cab at present
