Title: Swedish type A-14 subs - font used for name

Group,

Here's a real off the wall question for you. I'm slowly working on a Swedish type A14 sub and see that some of them have an abbreviated name on their sail. I'd like to add that too but can't quite decide what font is used. It may be Century Gothic Bold but I'm not sure. Can anyone help?

It's not century gothic bold the e is flat elongated

Not sure I understand what you mean by flat elongated.

I've looked at samples of Century Gothic Bold on the net and the 'e' looks identical to the 'e' in Nep. Maybe you're (or I'm) being fooled by the curvature in the sail and the angle of the picture.

A better match may be HGGothicE which has the elongated 'e'.

Elongated is squashed downwards, condensed is squashed sideways. Hope this helps with searches.

Come on arrow5.....I may be 1/2 Irish  :o ...but have differing thoughts on your grammatical terminology
To elongate? ....think of the horizontal plane ...do not consider any variation to the height...... but make wider = to elongate  :-))
To condense?........is that like Condensed Milk from contented cows? ......... {-) %%  ........Derek

OK Derek, is the above font elongated or condensed in your opinion ? >:-o    In typographical terms not grammatical terms. (I was an illustrator and screen printer also did sign-writing in another life, used lettering every day) <*<

Yep
That is condensed in the horizontal plane .
Which makes it appear elongated in the vertical plane.

I repeat  " in typographical terms" O0 .... {-) .   Ask your local sign-writer or printer (not a copy shop).  BTW there is a couple of Swedish guys building a  submarine on Mayhem, HMS Lundon thread, perhaps they can answer the original question.

The 'a' knocks a lot of fonts out of the window.
Probably a Swedish Dockyard painters own font
Or more likely the builders painters original painted
over at each refit if the HM Dockyard painters are anything
to go by.

I have been in contact with the marine museum in Karlskrona, Sweden, and they couldn't provide an direct answer at the moment. But here is a new picture they provided:
