Title: Building the FV Cornelia Marie
Post by: missyd on March 22, 2013, 10:58:36 am
After watching the "deadliest job" season 1-8 over and over again I decided to build the FV Cornelia Marie. There is a german webpage with a plan of her in PDF version. It can be used for reference but has some flaws ... Scale is 1/32 which is 132cm long and 27cm wide. It will have 2 motors, working lights and sound. And with the help of pumps the storage tanks for the king crabs will be filled with water.

Starting with the templates ...

Cutting the 8mm plywood

arranging the bulkheads for simetry ...

... and finally glueing the bulkheads together.

Hello!!!!
Nice job missyd
I don't know the boat or the specifications, but I have one question, won't be to heavy using that ply?

Best regards

Good luck missyd  :-))

Im currently in the process of making most of the fleet, i havent cut my forms for the cornelia yet, but the structural drawing is done.

Can you just confirm your dimensions, as from many sources the cornelia is 125 feet which would make it 38.1m at 1/32 scale this would make it 1190mm long her breadth is 275mm as in real life its 8.5-8.8 m

im not sure how the americans measure their boats but the cornelia isnt the same length as the northwestern its noticably shorter, i have allowed for this in my plans. I have an overhead shot of the NW CM TB and wiz you can see how they compare

good luck i will be following your progress

Thanks a lot! :-))
You're right I did miscalculate the length of the CM ...  {:-{
Anyway I still can change the lenght without any problems.
I downloaded the plan from the link and it is not exactly to scale ... therefore the boat is too long ....
The heavy ply will make it heavy but maybe I may save some ballast by using heavier ply for the bottom part of the CM?

BTW we have made some crab pots too!  ;)

Cheers Danielle

We (I and my love Anita) have also built some crab pots for the CM. Planned are 48 pots sofar ... maybe even more.

We use 1.5mm2 copper wire normally used for houshold power lines. Easy to cut bend and soldiers well with a soldiering iron from Weller.

just a few pics how we made them ... we have some wooden blocks as templates. A lot is done by eye. Without any measurements.
Pot are around 70x70x30mm

I am slowing working on my model of the CM ... next big challange is the bow wich is completely wrong on the plans I have. So I came up with my own set of plans for the bow.

Looks nice!

And I made some cardboard templates to cut the wood ... not shure if the result will be the right shape of the bow. But I can still adapt them if neccessary.

More crab pots have been made by ma fiancée Anita .... there are some 28 waiting to be loaded on the CM.

I have an office job ...  ok2
But I do my best to have a nice model at the end.

I screwed the bow to the rest of the ship ... later after some more work to the bow I will glued+screw it together.

Bow ist taking shape!!!! Some adaptation work has to be done on the bulkwards but it looks fantastic sofar! The wooden spacers (28x28mm) are just there to keep everything square and evenly spaced....last 3 pieces glued on later last evening.

More work done in the last days ...

Internal view of the bow. It came out rather nice and the openings allow access with my hand if I had to sort something out there.
Next I will cover the bow with balsa/plywood.

In the meantime Anita finished crab pot no.31! Now she make ropes ... we need 2x2m of rope per crab pot and 3 buoys (one of each: large, medium cylindrical and a small round one).

Sorry for not posting anything for some time. In summertime its difficult to stay inside and build models if outside the sun is shining and the weather is more like Sicilia than Switzerland.
I used 2-3mm Balsa to cover the prow of the Cornelia Marie. I just sanded it down to see if the proportions are OK. The whole hull will be covered with 1.2mm plywood. Strong enough to witstand any storm on the Bering sea ... model-lake.

Just a few pics from the last days work I've done ...

I fitted the deck on the CM ... will glue/screw it after I cut out the openings.

Did use a lot of putty to get the holes closed.  Anita is working here.

These are the two 12V motors I use ...

Mockup of the accumulator. I may use 3 of them (12V/9Ah each). Everything in front of the wood dovel will be the crab tank filled with water.

Hi Danielle,

your scratch model build of the CM is taking shape and is gradually becoming a spitting image of the real vessel. Congratulations! :-))

I admire your diligence jigsawing so many frames.
The sheer number almost looks as if you have taken the real building frames and stuck to the scaled down 1:1 frame spacing,
hadn't you told us that you had drawn your own plans or even didn't care for plans at all.
But these many frames must give you a pretty sturdy hull.
Maybe they will even help you to avoid any thoughts on extra ballast.

I certainly will follow your build's progress.

Ralph

Hi Ralph

Thanks a lot. I did use a plan (PDF) downloaded from the net but it was not as accurate as I hoped. I redraw all frames. OK 19 of them are the same size. The narrow spacing is a result of the 28mm wood I used as spacer. For another project I wouldn't use the same technique again... I also have a cardboard model of the CM. Its used for the overall proportions. Any other details I take from pictures I found on the net or on the Deadliest Catch DVDs.

Progress is very slow as I always have to find a solution for everything. Crabtanks are ready to be built, motors can be installed, hull can be planked with 1.2mm ply, the deck is ready for the cutouts ... but first I will paint the inside of the hull for waterproofing.

I wish it could be possible to produce some sort of black smoke ... blowing out of the smokestack if revs going up ... wonderful. (just dreaming)

Cheers Danielle

I harbour the same wish whenever I see those poor thin fumes emitting from the average model smoke generator.
I would rather like to see opaque, thick black plumes of smoke defying any efforts towards ecologically correct so-called Green Shipping (or more appropriately, Green Steaming). %%

Got the deck cut out and glued/screwed to the hull. Hope this makes the hull sturdy enough for roughest seas and the models weight.
First opening is for the working crab tank, second for the batteries, third is accesss to motors, speedcontrollers, pumps and the last one is for the ruders and electronics like soundmodule/RC ....

Time to test the unfinished CM in the bathtub!!! Hull safely covered in a plastic sheet and wow!!!!! It floats totally stable!!!!! Unfinished hull weight is 4.8kgs.

Picture shows hull in water with 10 + 4.8 = 14.8kgs. Nearly 5cms in the water. not enough! Waterline is aroud 10cm.

Ok more weight ---> 10kgs (cans/bottles) added till 9.5cm are reached ...

I couldn't add more wiehgt ... hull got instable because of high point of CG. I must say that with the right weight added the CM will be as stable as the original CM!

The total weight for the test was over 25kgs! It need another 3-4kgs to reach the right waterline. Now I have to get a lot of scrap iron to fill all avaiable space with it ...

I am looking for 2 pieces of soundmodules. Must have a good modern diesel sound and reasonably priced. I was thinking of using the one from Technobot Programmable Engine Sound System Mk2. Are they OK to use?

http://www.technobotsonline.com/programmable-engine-sound-system-mk2.html (http://www.technobotsonline.com/programmable-engine-sound-system-mk2.html)

The CM has 2 engines .... is there really a need to install two of them in the model?
Title: Re: Building the FV Cornelia Marie
Post by: catengineman on August 22, 2013, 07:45:58 am
The Mk2 version is listed as having two RC inputs and would use the higher speed (ESC) to the output of sound from the unit giving you the fastest engine noise from which ever side id running the fastest

Yes I read this option ... maybe it would be nice to have 2 sound modules for a better sound maybe even a little bit out of sync L/R engine??

Time to test the unfinished CM in the bathtub!!! Hull safely covered in a plastic sheet and wow!!!!! It floats totally stable!!!!! Unfinished hull weight is 4.8kgs.

Hi Danielle,
Congrats on thinking of a novel way of test floating the CM and inventing a new accessory for pool parties at the same time ! In case the lack of stability should affect your plans (Though I wouldn't think so ) the greater part of that loss was due to using cans/ bottles of liquid, each of which were not 100% full. This slack 'water' causes a thing called 'free surface effect' which decreases the stability markedly. If you think of the difficulty of carrying a washbowl full of water because the contents slosh about, this is in effect what is happening in every can etc.
After that useless bit of information ! Enjoying following the progress of your excellent model. Thanks !

regards

Mike

I took these pictures in Kodiak Alaska in 2011 (I recall) when she was laid up between fishing seasons. I hope they help with some details. :-)

I wish I had taken more photos at the time but the boat is so tall I couldn't find a good spot to get capture a lot of details and in Kodiak AK, you don't dare board someone's vessel unless you've been invited...
I grabbed a few pictures of the Time Bandit hauled out of the water at the shipyard, as well. ok2

Just one question about the color of the Cornelia Marie. Is it really green like seen on your pictures.

If you don't mind ... would you please send me the pictures of the Time Bandit by email? ---> missyd at gmx.ch

I bought 4 batteries each 12V/7Ah and 2.7kg ... 9.8kg in ballast from the batteries ... nice! I need over 25kgs ballast ....

The Anita and I put some color to the inside of the hull. Looks nicer and waterproofs the inside as well.

Cardboard mock-up of the lower part of rear superstructure ... nearly OK! The rear sloped walls need 1-2° more ...

I was up in Kodiak in late March or early April and the light can be kind of funny. I'm pretty sure those pictures were taken late in the day and the light made the paint look a little greener than you might expect. I think early that day it rained, snowed and then it cleared up to a beautiful afternoon. Ha ha!

I can definitely email you some Time Bandit pictures tomorrow when  locate the camera chip (again....) {:-{
BTW - you've done a nice job shaping the bow. The plans on the website shows a bow that, in my experience, seems to be a little too pointed. Yours is much closer to the style of many of these boats.

Thank you  very much for info abour the bow! I was thinking of changing the shape to a more pointed version ... but I wasn't 100% if it would come out OK. Now I will leave it as it is!

Designers all have their own ideas about how a boat will move through the water. A sharp entry might blow through a wave rather than lift with the wave. A blunt bow may slam and pound.
Here's a couple teaser pictures of the bow of the Time Bandit for comparison.

I think this bow on the time bandit is ugly ... maybe it saves some fuel?  %)
The crabbers need to be very stable in very bad weather. No need to go fast or powerful for big trawling nets.

Title: Re: Building the FV Cornelia Marie
Post by: missyd on August 27, 2013, 06:45:52 am
Added another 9mm to the top of the bow. Had to do this because the bow was too low (or the crab pots a little too big). They have to fit under the shelterdeck.

Then I made corrections to the cardboard mockup. A little bit more sloping to the back and rear sides. Couldn't resist to put all crab pots on deck to see if it looks ok!!! Looks just fantastic!!!!

Here's a couple teaser pictures of the bow of the Time Bandit for comparison.

Never having watched the Deadliest Catch (lack a satellite dish to receive those Reality TV committed channels) I cannot say what the hull of the TIME BANDIT used to look like.
But this protruding cylindrical bulb to me looks like having been retrofitted later, post-delivery so to speak.
As the diameter of its cylinder doesn't look too wide and the structure of cylinder and semi-sphere quite sturdy, I think the perils of slamming aren't excessive, despite the Alaskan notoriously heavy sea.
If it helps cutting fuel costs in moderate sea states.

I've done most of the lower planking during the last weeks. Now I have to fill-up all the imperfections with putty.

The nailheads will be sanded away with the putty ...

I do not intend to make a very smooth hull as the original looks very beaten up!!!

I went to the modelfair at Friedrichshafen in southern germany last weekend. I found some really small 1:700 geared 3V motors for the radars. They are used in the 1/87 RC-Cars ....  :-)
Very expensive at 24.50 Euro but I think smaller motors do not exist ...

Hi Derek
I will red thepainting tread. Thnks for the suggestion. I only want to say that ships never have a very smooth surface. The hull will be covered with the thinniest  glass fabric/parquet lacquer method. This will cover all steel pins visible.

Today I glued in the brass tubes for the two rudders.

1. from the image of the real vessel I see port prop as anticlockwise rotation + stdb prop clockwise rotation for fwd motion [contra rotating outward turning]

missyd...if you are talking about securing plastic A supports to brass... >>:-( I doubt if it would be strong enough
Your attempt here looks OK.....you could consider lightly drilling the main brass tube to locate the 3 legs prior to soldering.......another consideration is the choice of soldering equipment......those little pencil gas torches & liquid flux assist
You can also soak a paper hand towel in water and wrap around parts to act as a heat sink
I think it would be worthwhile to continue to practise soldered construction.....Derek

Hi Danielle, I am enjoying your build, your work is first class but correct me if I am wrong, you have the props marked L & R but your boat is upside down so they will be the other way round when the boat is upright. I am not sure it matters but I saw that happen before with the navigation lights when installed with the boat upside down. Good luck with your build it is coming along great & thanks for sharing with us. Mick B.

Just love working with these ABS-Profiles!!!! I hope everything is finished till the end of the week. Aluminium profile is used to keep everthing level ....

First rudder is finished ... just have to clean it up and sand it a little bit.

As soon as the second is finished I have to make the pump inlets and finish the planking ...

Rudders are finished! (still some sanding needed)

...sometimes it is very difficult to see what is going on & we can get confused......especially from 22,000km away...

Hi Derek,

seems you are measuring distances from Down Under.
I think Danielle is spying not more than some 8000 km (http://www.distance-calculator.co.uk/world-distances-anchorage-to-zurich.htm) into the Wild Blue Yonder.

Quote from: Derek
1. from the image of the real vessel I see port prop as anticlockwise rotation + stdb prop clockwise rotation for fwd motion [contra rotating outward turning]
2. from your model I see port prop as clockwise rotation + stdb prop anticlockwise rotation for fwd motion [contra rotating inward turning]
Just an observation...

Though correctly observed, in Danielle's place I would wait until her model of CM is ready for her first "sea" trials,
and then decide on whether letting the props turn outwardly or inwardly from the outcome of trials with respectively different arrangement.

I think for twin screw propulsion on real ships it cannot definitively be determined which arrangement is to prefer in general and both constellations can be found,
although I think that a slight majority of ship operators let the props turn outwardly.
Afaik, there aren't even distinct recommendations for either constellation that could be based on scientific evidence despite some research in this area by ship model basins, CFD analysis and ship hydrodynamicists´ experience.
Especially in model scale often the manoeuvrability can be considerably improved when letting the props turn inwardly (albeit this might relate to a single centre line rudder arrangement).

I would have thought that you belonged to the much younger Millennials (or Generation Y as they are also often referred to).

Interestingly, quite a few companies here in Germany have begun to rediscover and appreciate the virtues and assets of mature employees lately.

That's also happening with a few companies here in NZ, then we get accused of stopping the school leavers from finding jobs.
But, the companies realize us oldies are required to train up the newbie youngsters before we disappear and there is no one to train the new.
Here and Australia, there is a gap in the workforce, where no one trained any new, so no young was employed. The missing generation gap is now evident.
cheers

Good luck in your job hunt missyd

Hello Danielle,
Still looking great, that hull fine on the port bow in the previous set of pictures looks interesting. Could it be a sailing barge or similar ?

Hello Danielle,

is the reddish paint coat only a layer of primer? I thought the CM had a light blue hull above the water line.

But the vessel in red would look also very interesting and would draw much attention I suppose.

Regards,
Ralph

@Mike: You're right. Its the hull of a italian sailing boat from the adriatic sea in 1/6th scale. I will finish it not as sailing boat but finish it as motorised boat to collect shells.

@Ralph: The Cornelia Marie has a red primer beneath the blue or black (under the waterline) color. The right colors are already on stock and waiting to be used.

Just have to write that the blue color is a little bit on the drk side and will be much lighter in future.

I added a lot of white to the blue to get nearer the original one. Blue color on pics a little bit darker than it is in reality...

Hi Danielle,

your build is making rapid progress.
Now as more and more detail is being added it is getting ever more interesting to follow.

I know, you had written that the first layer of blue paint was merely a test run to get acquainted with your airbrush pistol.
I cannot remember which were the better systems and devices. The ones that have the paint cup below the pistol's muzzle or those on top of it, as yours?
I think the latter are the better and more expensive devices. Just in case I can ever afford to buy me a set.
But the colour looks a wee bit too dark to me when comparing with the colour photos of the CM that I have seen.
Might be accounted for the well-known darkening effect of exactly the same colours (e.g. RAL Nos.) when applied to the small surfaces of a model as compared to the large areas of the original vessel.

Looks your chances of finding a job will increase soon, now that the Swiss People voted in favour of curbing labour immegrants from e.g. Germany and Italy (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-26108597). %%

Never mind, only pulling your leg. :}

However, yesterday's Bloomberg comment on the outcome and possible effects of the referendum (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-02-09/swiss-voters-support-immigration-limits-with-50-3-srf.html) was even harsher than that of the BBC above.

Regards,
Ralph

Thanks Ralph ... will get some time till I'll find a job but I don't give up. Will take a lot of time till the result of the referendum will change something.

I had 2 cheap airbrush pistols with the cup below but they never worked properly. I then bought a set from my local DIY shop for 100£ with the cup above and a air compressor. This set works fine. The color is much lighter than on the pictures. I checked it in the sun and it looks allright.

Everyday a new part. Today its the anchor and its support.

"Checked it in the SUN " What's that when it's out then !  :((
As you say it depends on the light, as is shown in the two pics. The exterior shot looks darker than the one of the inside bulwarks in different light conditions.
I never realised what a Mickey Mouse arrangement she had for her forr'd anchor, especially in the seas around those parts. Looks like its just asking to be sent flying in a bad head sea, securing pins or whatever regardless !

Mike

@Mike. The picture on the trolley was made around 4pm ... no sun ...

I never built such a nice model by myself and without plans ... you'll learn things the more you build on a model ship.

Here a picture directly in the sun around noon! Big difference in color. And I must say its still lighter as on the picture! It is very difficult to find the right color! I have pictures all with different shades of blue and even some where she looks like she has a green color. It must be the light situation in Alaska that changes the color from day to day ....

Worked on the bow today ... I want to finish it asap ... the n I can put on the blue paint outside.

And to end the day I turned the foundation of the crane on my lathe. Looks alright for me.

Two of the four crab tanks have a live water future! Its driven by a 12V waterpump that actually runs on 6V.
We installed a quick test setup in the kitchen to see if everything is working ... to my surprise everything worked as planned.

Anita my wife took the video ...

Still looking great, is it starting to feel a bit heavy by now ? The idea of pumping water into the model, then presumably overflowing across the deck a la the overflowing tanks of the CM is certainly a novel addition, if not a little unnerving ! The idea of introducing water from the outside into the model goes against the instincts  :embarrassed:

You're right Mike. A very special feature. Actually I had planned to include a big waterfilled tank in the front compartment. But I have not figured out how to do it in a safe way and so I decided to delete it from my plans. Weight is really no problem. 25kg minimum are needed to get the Cornelia Maria on the waterline. We'll see if everything works out as planned.

I think you might be surprised at the loss of stability if a larger tank were to be allowed to slop around. The Free Surface Effect can be considerable - I speak with many stressful experiences of loading full size ships when stability was tight, in the 'good old days'  >:-o

I have played with such an idea myself...

the solution to stop the swishing is,

on the inside of the tank, we have a lid maybe glued to some foam this will rise and fall with the amount of water....this lid will be fixed on a runner either side of the tank, which means it can only rise with the amount of water, the runners will be made in such a way that they can only work together...i.e when the boat is level the water can be put into the tank, when the boat is not level the runners wont work, ( prevents sloshing about )

in theory it works in my head...... {-) {-)  ........not got round to practical installation and trials yet though

Chris and Mike ... you're both right. I would have added sloshing boards to the inside of the tanks just like they have on some boats ...

I have played with such an idea myself...

Alternatively - install clear thin (.5mm) plastic baffles - egg crate/ice cube tray shape - interlaced fingers square pattern about 3/4 depth of the water with a reasonable number of holes - the holes allow the water to circulate, the baffles add resistance to the water moving about too much, like what they have in fluid road tankers - clean and thin so they 'disappear' in the water - just a thought if in full view, if not on show, just put the baffles in

Exactly what I wanted to do ....  :-))

On a full sized ship the double bottom ballast and fuel tanks all have inter-plates with lightening holes in them similar to the baffles you mention. Lets say there is a strong breeze when the model is on the water, all models naturally heel a bit to the wind and it is at this prolonged lying at an angle that allows the tank water to percolate through the baffles and across to the low side and increase the list. Bobbing about on the waves indeed helps cancel out the heeling effect.
Not saying for a moment that it is instant gloom and doom ! just to be aware.  :-))

Love the brasswork mast.  :-))

And the added layer to the decking  :o  thats a layer of detail I probably wouldn't have built.

Great Work.  8)

Thanks a lot! The added layer on the deck is mandatory to get rid of the water splashing on deck and the water coming out of the 2 forward crab tanks.
Wonderful block to haul in the pots! Can I order one?  ok2

Any plan on a launch date?
Title: Re: Building the FV Cornelia Marie
Post by: missyd on September 16, 2014, 07:00:38 pm
Actually I had planned to attend 2 shows in Switzerland this year. Sadly I takes more time to finish the CM than I had planned. I think maybe in Nov/Dec it will be ready for launching.
Title: Re: Building the FV Cornelia Marie
Post by: Umi_Ryuzuki on September 17, 2014, 04:17:38 am
I wouldn't let the fact that the model isn't finished put you off from attending an event.
Events are where you get to share your work and meet other locals with the same hobby.
Share, inspire, and be inspired. Worst thing that could happen is that you find a new
subject that you want to model.

 ok2
Title: Re: Building the FV Cornelia Marie
Post by: missyd on September 18, 2014, 08:26:22 pm
You're right ... but I want to attend my first show with a 100% working model. I want to see the faces of the visitors when they see it for the first time ... ok2

BTW ... the  next model is in the pipeline ... a italian trawler for a friend of mine ... actually its his trawler he owned once ...

Actually its not really humid from the washing machine or tumbler ... tumbler has a built in condenserbox. when the tumbler is working the air is too dry!

A quick paint job for all the remaining unpainted parts on the upper deck ...

Title: Re: Building the FV Cornelia Marie
Post by: missyd on November 30, 2014, 05:45:54 pm
Thanks a lot my friends! Its really fun to build it!
I could rub some bad smelling old fish from my fishmonger over the deck for the right smell .... ok2

The nav lights are from a german online shop (Modellbau Kaufhaus) they sell wonderful stuff there.

The small fishing lights are from Robbe and the big lamps with the 2 LEDs are scratchbuilt (both lacking the glass).

A bit of Acetate from the photo copy shop might make good lens for your lamps.
Evergreen or Plastruct make clear styrene. It can be a bit crisp though, and fracture
along the edges as you cut. It's not a split either, more of a delamination fracture if you use a dull knife.
Raboesch makes a nice 0.010 clear PVC.
I prefer the PVC over the styrene, the acetate is okay.
I use the PVC for window glass, and it comes in tints if you prefer
a brown(smoked) glass or blue or green tint windows at the bridge.

Built 2 handles for lifting the deck safely from the ship. Space is very thight and I have only a few mm to spare. They have a M4 tread for easy fixing on the deck.

Hi Mark

Thats the 4 wheel truck we will use to transport the CM.
http://www.amazon.de/Hudora-10321-HUDORA-%C3%9Cberl%C3%A4nder-Handwagen/dp/B00DCT3DF0 (http://www.amazon.de/Hudora-10321-HUDORA-%C3%9Cberl%C3%A4nder-Handwagen/dp/B00DCT3DF0)
I have to fit some sort of support for the CM on top but the truck is foldable and rides very well.

Is that a choice because you have tried both methods ? Not that I have experience in this skill and my relationship with an airbrush has been mediocre, if that is what can be achieved using the 'dry brush' method then that will be my choice

Just noticed in your latest pics that there might be a bit of vibration from the stbd motor as there is a slight misalignment at the U/J.
You are probably aware of this already, but I'm just chuffed at finding my first small blip in this great build !      {-)

I'll see if it creates vibrations or not. The motor unit has some rubber mats under it.

HI Danielle

Back to your post after several weeks, 2 things, you mentioned that when you sprayed the hull there was a terible mess, try hanging a damp sheet around the spray area, (DAMP) this causes the overspray to stick to the sheet and not go everywhere, the other or combined reason is that you posibly had the spray presure to high for the thickness of paint, this would also give a sandpaper effect as the paint is already drying befor it hits the surface.
Hope your problems wont stop you spraying, the effects and finish with practice can be superb.

Your photo of the speed controlers, are you fitting a plate above the rudders? if not please make sure the wireing cant droop down into the chain drive.

Regards

Danielle sorry to be picky but I can also see a potential problem in the wireing dept ....it is called Tamyia connectors....Personally I would change these for XT60 connectors which will carry a lot more current then those
Tamya ones

@Mark: Thank you for the very good idea with the damp sheet!!! I'll try this with my next trawler model. No problem with the chain for the rudders ... everything stays in place and out of the way!

@Dave: I know the Tamyia connectors are rubish! But the drawn current is very low (only 35mm screws). I never used other connectors a the Tamyia ones ...

I added the rubber sealing on the deck.

Was that water park a normal boating area or was it a special event??

Mark it was the annual model-boat-show of a club ... it was held in a outdoor swimming pool(s). One pool for the slow models and one for the racing boats.

Just a quick question:
The CM is running on two 12V Motors (Igarachi 3657-050, 10-14V, rated voltage 12VDC, noload current 0.25A, load current max. 1.6A, noload 8000rpm) each connected to a 6V/9Ah lead/acid battery. On full speed the CM is about on the right speed but if there is some wind/waves she'll have problems .... more power is needed.

I ordered 2 motors (Igarachi SP3657-030, 3-14V, rated voltage 7.2VDC, noload current 1.6A, load current max. 8A, noload 10500rpm) they will run on the same 6V/9Ah battery.
I hope they will make my CM a little bit faster.
I am right or not?

That's about a 25% increase in unloaded speed so it should give you a little more speed.
If the existing motors are not getting warm in use then another option might be to go for the next size up props.

Post by: missyd on April 28, 2015, 02:34:14 pm
Thanks for the info.
Motors and ESCs are always cool.
Can't go for bigger props as the space is limited to max. 35mm props.

A lot more than 25% surely.

Danielle, a diffferent solution, up-grade the battery to 12v this would increse the revs and give a little more tourque. Would your ESC allow that?

No the ESCs do not like 12V even if they should handle 12V .... Graupner Navy VR15 ....
Thats why I switched from 12 to 6V....

Replaced the 12V Motors with some 7.2V much more power for bad weather conditions!
I also relocated the on/off switches for the ESCs. Both can be switched from the outside of the CM without opening a hatch or taking of something.
A test in the bathtub was successful and I hope to take her to a nice lake soon to take some better pictures.

hiya,

Do you then run these on 12 volts.  I have a batch of 7.2 volt motors I was planning to try on a 12 volts supply.  (not flat out, I may add)

I wondered if it did them any harm.

Hi Danielle, just back from holiday and catching up on MBM to find the big event has passed and gone !

Congratulations the Cornelia looks every bit as good as she promised to be  and more ! I bet you were a bit nervous risking so much work and attention loose amongst the mayhem going on at the show, I certainly would have been.

As someone has mentioned , it would be even better to see her in more opaque waters, that would give her an even more  realistic image.

Hope she gives you many hours of entertainment - that is, until the next model comes along.......................................?? %)

Thanks a lot Mike. It was a fantastic experience at the show! Its a pleasure to steer with ease the CM around all obstacles on water during the show.
We will take more realistiv pictures on a lake as soon as the weather is better .... hope to stay at the lake the afternoon till it gets dark. We also plan to drive in the alps to take more pictures in very realistic "nordic" environment ... any update concening the CM will be posted here.

My next model will be an elegant italian fishtrawler ....

Alaska and the Bering sea ....

The water came very often up and over the reling and at the end the was 1/2 cup of water in the hull ... no problem as with all the partitions inside the water stayed in place and did not filled the whole hull.

Congratulations Danielle, she looks great  :-)) I like the second last picture in the stills where she is showing a bit of her beam ends and displaying your beautifully done weathering and the video also came out great, the way she corkscrewed in the quarterly seas was most realistic.

You certainly don't do things by halves ! As Derek Warner said, it took a bit of courage to sail her in that big lump of water ! It certainly would need an very big pair of wellies if things went wrong  %%

Part 2 - brilliant :-))....... 2:36 to 2:42.....very life like........in Part 4 ......2:20 to 2:50...... wallowing across the waves/swell  <*< extra brilliant ....possible the best footage

In Part 2, I thought the cargo had moved in her hull as she appeared to list to STDB, however Part 4 discounted this......you should be very proud Danielle.....O0........ Derek
Title: Re: Building the FV Cornelia Marie
Post by: MikeK on May 17, 2015, 08:04:19 am
As Derek said, a boat to be really proud of !

I like the shots of her in a quarterly/following 'sea' best - maybe because it was it was that corkscrewing motion I found least comfortable with in the real thing ! :((

Has any manufacturer come up with a realistic flag yet ? There must be a modern material made sufficiently fine to enable the flag to 'droop' realistically instead of sticking out bar straight and detracting from the realism.

All in all a beautiful model, now for things slinky and Italian............................................?

Missyd I have been following your thread on this forum over the last few days and must say that it is without doubt one of the finest models I have ever seen, and I don't mean one of the finest model boats I mean its one of the finest model anything I have seen. Well done its superb.

I am no photographer but I think that if you photograph the model with the camera at water level looking up at the front of the boat and the front of the ship in focus and background (or even the back of the ship) out of focus it will be very hard to tell it from the real ship.

I would be tempted to pay a professional photographer to photograph it if I had something that looks as realistic as that. I look forward to your next model..... well done again....   U2

I've just bought one of these props (40mm 3 blade though) and the finish is gorgeous. My intention is that my build will be something I can put on the shelf and admire as well as use, and if the components available are consistently this high in quality I may just be able to achieve it.

She looks great with the new props, Dannielle

You probably have something similar already, but just in case. I carry in my tool box one of those trigger sprayer gadgets you get with domestic products, minus the bottle of course ! If you can find a length of tubing to replace th short bit fitted so much the better for getting into far corners of the hull and squirt any ingress back where it belongs !

The rust is made with acrylic paint from the craft shop ... it has to be matte (dull) and never ever make the color thinner by adding fluid. Stir the paint well and off you go ... different shades of browns can be used. After 2-3 irregular layers over the original color (also Acrylic) the rust is perfect.

Exactly! Very nice picture of the tug! The lake had no real waves so I decided to fix the deck with only 4 screws instead of 8 .... happily only a small amout of water in the hull. But seeing the pictures I think only some degrees more and she would have heeled over ....

Was there no rudder or reverse on the Tug? {:-{

I'm no boat pilot yet but I can't see how you can ram someone by accident. I can understand with model cars and planes due to the speeds but not boats! If I wasn't an accomplished pilot I'd stay well clear for fear of sinking someone's pride and joy. U2

I think the latest video was the better of the two, probably it was the more overcast conditions and a little less chop on the water so the CM didn't have that 'bobbing' motion. The beginning was a little spooky with the realistic view from the wheelhouse of the rocky bottom, if I had seen that from the real thing a change of unerwear would have been on the cards  :embarrassed: :}

Watching this space for tiny deckhands wandering around !

The CM was always a little bit underpowered with the 12V motors running on 6V. cheapest solution is a prop change. Now the CM has 2x45mm instead of 2x35mm. The first test in the bathtub was a success! Hope this 3rd prop change will be the last one!

After testing the CM with the new 45mm props in a fountain in Frauenfeld. A little bit small but you can do turns and equipped with fenders I could do some "parking" exercises ...
BTW the test was very positiv! I like the added power to the CM.

My CM had always a few issues with the rudders .... so I decided to build some new ones .... and the props where too long!

Old parts ....

After 1.5h the rudders are partly finished. The props are shorted as much as I could. You also can see the cardboard strip with the max. height the rudders can have.
I think the new rudders will be much better.

Danielle............with the extra surface area of the rudders, you will find the steerage is sharper or more responsive to the helm

Have you considered using an ACTion P96 servo slow down?........may assist in more scale like rudder movements over jerkiness

http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjW_bilnYXMAhXktYMKHXZ2AxUQFggcMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.action-electronics.co.uk%2Fpdfs%2FP96.pdf&usg=AFQjCNGg2pxP5R0u9BeNodnY2dJ2UCvg5w

On the subject of steerage, could you please confirm the Brand of manufacture for your steering link ladder chain & sprockets....it doesn't appear to be from either Tamiya, the Servo City range from USA or any of the SPD offerings

Such a single installation of the chain drive will assist me in a very limited space area aft of the rudder post to achieve ~~ 180 degrees of swept rudder movement O0

Derek I bought the sprocket and chain from CONRAD ELECTRONIC in germany --->https://www.conrad.de/ (https://www.conrad.de/)

The chain can be fond in MECCANO kits. Its half the width and goes well with the thin meccano sprockets.
Sprockets are cheap module 1 ones.

Maybe I can find a onlineshop for you. Shops with robotics have them ....

That is a lovely detail to add to aworking model Danielle.

I read the first four pages trying to work out how your hull had gone from a rounded shape with close pitch ply frames to a squarer bilge with fewer frames and a longer hull before realising that it wasn't Nuova but the thread of another lovely model that you had reopened. What a gorgeous model. I think she is one of the most realistic models I have seen on the water, and if the films were slowed down, people might wonder why you had spent so much time filming the real thing! Only the frequency of the waves makes it obvious that the ship is a model.

Also, I salute your reserves of enthusiasm for making so many crab pots. How did you make them? Wire and Viol netting?
Title: Re: Building the FV Cornelia Marie
Post by: missyd on April 12, 2016, 04:19:03 am
Thanks a lot ... my wife does all filming of the CM. Its always very nice to see it on the lake.

The prototype crab pots where made by myself. The serie production by my wife. I use copper wire soldered together. Then the pots go into a saltwater bath for a couple of day so they start to corrode.
Netting is from a local sewing shop. Its netting intended for carneval costumes. Viol netting was to small. Original color is silver and therefore I spraypainted it to the right color.

Good lord, that is a lot of effort considering the shape of the pots. I salute your team work and perseverance :-))

Its reported today (yesterday) that the fishing vessel Destination is missing with all hands in the Bering Sea. The search has been called off by the coastguard. The Destination appeared in the program Deadliest Catch along with the Cornelia Marie

Though the Destination was not a boat featured on Discovery’s Emmy-winning reality series Deadliest Catch (https://www.yahoo.com/tv/tagged/deadliest-catch), Hillstrand’s fellow captains on the show joined the Coast Guard and the boat’s owners (http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/northwest/disappearance-of-seattle-based-crab-boat-crew-a-mystery/) in expressing both their condolences to the crew’s family and friends and thanks to the shoreline volunteers and Good Samaritan vessels who aided in the search.
